Friends,

I'm considering the NXS 2.5-10×42 COMPACT with capped turrets. A few questions for those familiar with this model or similar NF variants. I'll call NF tomorrow but would like to hear some feedback from shooters as well.

Application / Specifics
Scope link: https://nightforceoptics.com/nxs/2-5-10x42
Platform: BCM REECE-16 MCMR 5.56 NATO
Uses:
  • CQB - 200 yards (occasional 300-500 yards at the range)
  • Farm / chore varmint gun for coyotes and hogs out to 200 yards
  • Home defense / CQB
  • Paper punching but no competitions
Feature Preference:
  • Illuminated reticle required for increased low light capability
  • Focal plane: preference is SFP as I've never shot FFP and am not sure I'd like the format. Also, I've heard FFP could be problematic at close range with lower magnification (not my first hand experience as I've only read this).
Questions:
  • Any specific feedback on reticle choice? Currently, the IHR looks ideal.
  • Any feedback on hunting application?
  • Other observations / thoughts from hunting / field use?
* Note - Feel free to PM if you have some feedback you don't want to post in the open forum.

Thanks,

Joe

I have had the uncapped version for about a year and like it a-lot.Mine has the mil-r reticle and i also like it.The Illumination is not daylight bright but works very good when it is starting to get dark out and is easy to turn on and off.It is a handy lw scope for hunting and has plenty of elevation to work with. The glass is very good and has a forgiven eyebox .I run mine on a Kidd SG 10/22 and it has enough elv to get me out to 400 yds.

Moose,

Thanks for the detailed feedback. I appreciate that it has a forgiving eyebox as I've found this to be a real hassle on many other optics (to include some very expensive scopes) I've previously owned.

I'll give another look at the MIL-R reticle as it seems many folks seem to like it as much as you do.

I’ve got the uncapped MOAR reticle model on a 300 blackout bolt action that I use for high shot count goat culling.
Need to dial up elevation a lot because of the caliber and when I haven’t got time use the moa reticle hold overs.
Most of my shooting 90% is free hand 5m to 200m and 10% shooting off a pack, rocks, logs or trees out to 300m. The illumination is great evening hunts or hunting in big tall dark forest areas on a dark cloudy overcast day.

It’s my favourite Nightforce scope easy to sit behind, good eye relief, great turrets, zero stop is good if you dial I have mine set for supersonics and turret zero for subsonics, parallax is nice to have in a scope this small and can handle hard abuses as I use this rig 100 days a year in the mountains for the last 5 years problem free.

Each to there own but the only problem I see with the IHR reticle and capped turrets in that it is zeroed for a known distance and no hold, I wouldn’t want to loose turret caps or guess hold overs.

Thats my pig scope on a SCAR-H. I wouldnt use it for HD. I used an RMR on a 45 degree offset with it for awhile which worked much better than I could have expected. Love the Mil-R. Low light gathering is good for a 42mm. Shoot mine to 800 just fine.
