Quite Muzzel Brake?

Please excuse my ignorance. I'm a bit of a FNG. I have never used a muzzle brake unti 2 years ago when I bought a .30-378 with an Acubrake on it. The difference was unbelivable. I could actually see the deer flip through the scope. I always use hearing protection at the range but left it off while hunting on my first trip to the woods with this gun. 1 Buck, 1 doe and a yote latter I am near deaf in my left ear. Since then I have forgot my muffs at the house but rig something up to cram in my ears once in the field. Long story short I have recently got a 300 WM w/o a brake and am looking for a quiet brake. It seems like an oxymoron to me but some claim to have figured out the physics (i.e.. Vais, Gentry, Holland). Anybody have any wisdom to share? Thanks...

If you can afford it a suppressor is your best option. Cheapest option would be electronic ear-pro.

I've got the electronic ear-pro. They come in pretty handy when my 7 year old hasn't taken out of my hunting bag. He probably will not do it again but never know about his little brother. Lol. Lookn into suppressors but are illegal to hunt w/ in OK except for hogs for now.

Vais,seem's to be the quietest that I have been around,alot of guys I shoot with have them,you still need ear protector's for sure.

Thanks to all. Leaning towards suppressor w/ QD and remove when going to the field. From what I have read I will loose a little but not much in the way of accuracy. Any advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated...

There are no "Quiet Muzzle Brakes".

The minor difference in sound levels from one or another is not going very far in the preservation of the hearing department.

If your state allows hunting with a suppressor and you want to spend the money, then there's your answer.

Other than that, get a Brake that's going to give you the most recoil reduction and go with the electronic hearing protection.

I never paid much attention to muzzle blast from a brake until I shot at a couple of matches last month. Some of those rifles had some pretty hefty blast impulse to them along with the usual loudness associated with brakes.

For an AR .223 the linear compensator works really well in projecting the sound forward away from the ears. At least it seems that way for me. However, the only one I know of for 30 cal is this http://www.kiesfirearms.com/Parts_and_Accessories.html

The WCI muzzle brake is quieter than most "open sided" brakes I've used. It directs the gasses 360, so not as focused in one area. It work really really well. Very comfortable to shoot with.

JC, I may have misspoke. I was under the impression that I would get better groups with the suppressor on than off. Are you saying there should be no difference? Thanks...

The Noveske KX3 is the only device i know of that reduces noise besides a suppressor.
The Muscle brake is the quietest for the shooter that I have heard

Your original impression is correct. The way you wrote it looked like you expected worse accuracy with the suppressor.

Thanks VEO. I got the Muscle Brake for the .300 WM. I have a Remgton 700 .243 for my 7 year old to hunt with next year that is breakless at the moment. What are you shooting the Seekins on and how would you describe the recoil, back and down blast? Thanks again...

On my hunting rifle I keep a pair of ear plugs on the rifle sling. That way you will not go without.

You shouldn't lose much with surefire or thunderbeast...

I've made a few muzzle brakes for my rifles, the thing that works, according to my experience, to reduce report is a relatively small gas expansion chamber (to drop gas pressure) between the muzzle and the first surface of gas stop/re-derict arrangement of the brake. Kind of like the dramatically scalled down "silencer component", which adds some "closed room" for the gas to expand before it hits the actual brake surfaces.

What about "the claymore "brake. Pushes all gas forward especially designed for sbr's. Not sure if they make it for your thread pattern though.

I went ahead and ordered one from Glen as well. Hard to beat his if you dont like it he will take it back offer. I don't think I'll be sending it back though based on the reviews that I have read.

About to go out and try the Primary Weapons Systems CQB Comp 30 on my 308 bolt gun - want the noise to go down range and still have some compensation.

The titan muzzle brake is not "loud", but I would not target shoot anything without plugs in. The browning boss is the loudest brake I have ever heard. Vias and titan don't neciserally make a gun any louder while behind the gun shooting. I am very hard of hearing in my left ear from mortar rounds hitting danger close though.

Seekins uses a Jam Nut so no gunsmithing required for installation or timing.

Hi Ryan, We make them in 5/8-24 and 1/2-28 threads. Most AR's are 1/2-28. When you order ask for the AR brake and you will get the proper one. It has a jam nut, so no gunsmith or special timing is needed other than your barrel threaded 1/2-28

I use Walkers Game Ears. They are ok but I have nothing to make a comparison to.

biggest issue with runnin a can is added length

ok my way of thinking, and what im going to do with my new gun is use a muzzle break at the range to reduce recoil and focus on basics of shooting and take it off to go hunting. when im shooting an animal i never feel the recoil like at the range. i would use a suppresor but i cant afford one right now

I felt the same way with my .30-378. I got to were I liked seeing my hits. I am now puting and leaving breaks on everything and trying to remeber my Walkers Game Ears to keep what hearing I have left.

The only problem with that is that ATF could theoretically decide to consider that device to be a silencer, since it acts to reduce the sound signature at the muzzle. Have you ever sent one in to Tech Branch and asked them to inspect it?
