Quittin Dippin. Tips or Tricks??

Re: Quittin Dippin. Tips or Tricks??

Cole, I picked up that you have close relatives that are dentists, just to clarify I am a dentist as well so I do speak with some experience on the issue.

We'll leave it at that.

Cheers

LOL, lots of dentist around here. Once again, I don't think dipping is a good or healthy thing, and do not suggest that non tobacco users take it up.

Cheers,

Cole

That's because most dentists prefer to play rather than work.. lol

Re: Quittin Dippin. Tips or Tricks??

Be mentally strong. When yu get an urge, simply deny yourself. It's simple.

Hard, but simple. I'm quitting smoking after 15 years because I had a heart attack about a month ago at 33 years old.

Nothing like a little reality to help with the motivation.

If anything, this thread serves as a staunch warning not to piss off your dentist. I didn't know they were all avid shooters.

Re: Quittin Dippin. Tips or Tricks??

It's tough to kick. I've been dipping/chewing on and off since I was 11 - let's just say it's been a lot longer than your 6 years lol. My time in the USMC turned it into more of a daily habit. I quit cold turkey with hard candy my last year in even though I was around it daily. That lasted about 5 years, why the hell did I re-start? No idea.

I've tried several times over the years to quit but on day 3 the headaches and feeling down came on everytime and I gave in.

I don't like medications but I talked to my Dr. about Chantix and what he thought. He stated the key is always wanting to quit nothing else can trump that, minus incarceration and pure unavailability. I tried it and within 2 days I had no desire to dip even though the can was right in front of me. No headaches no down feeling, although I put on about 25 lbs with increased appetite, until I increased my gym time. After 30 days I decided I'm good, no reason to spend the $$ on more chantix. A few months later I was out at the movies and they ran out of hot dogs, I wanted a damn hot dog....booom walk over to 7-11 get a can of dip and ruin all of that work.

The point is I should have stayed on the meds for at least the 90 days. It's usually best to stay on the Chantix for 90 -120 days to establish a new habit which doesn't include dipping.

Ultimately it's retraining your mind into new habits, maybe you can quit cold turkey, or wean yourself off. It depends upon the person. I'd only recommend meds as a last option. But the health benefits if getting rid of nicotine far outweigh the cost of meds or any other treatment.

Need to get my head right to give it another go.

Chantix is nothing short of a miracle. My wife and I both quit smoking with it, months apart. I did not steal one of her cigarettes when I was the only non-smoker. By the end of the first week, I couldn't even feel the cigarettes so when I had to stop altogether it was easy. The only thing I was quitting was the constant getting up and going outside. I had no cravings for the drug at all. I know several people that had tried unsuccessfully to quit that had no problem quitting with the help of Chantix. I can't recommend it enough.

Re: Quittin Dippin. Tips or Tricks??

Do you want to quit. I smoked for 10 years and definately did not want to quit but told a buddy i would try quitting with him. A week later I was done, haven't touched a cig in over 2 years. I went on Chantix. The Effects would be the same for you. The side effects do vary though. I had some seriously vivid dreams. One of which kind of moved into reality. In my dream i was in serious need a of a bunch of 550 cord. I woke up the following morning and found a confirmation in my email from an order i placed for 2000 feet of it.

Good thing you didn't dream of mail order brides.

Re: Quittin Dippin. Tips or Tricks??

Stop spending money on tobacco and spend it on firearms from fellow Hide members!

I quit smoking by not buying them anymore. That's worked for me for about 2-1/2 years. Seems too simple but it worked for me.

Re: Quittin Dippin. Tips or Tricks??

It is all in your mind. Dont go to the store and buy another can. Think about how your life revolves around it. You have been making all kinds of arrangements you dont even relize just to go get a dip. I dipped for somewhere around 20 years. Quit Jan 09. Didnt buy another can. If you dont buy it you wont use it. Be strong. But, if you dont really want to then you wont do it. You have to want it. On a lighter note my wife tried to quit smoking with chantex. Couldnt take it anymore b/c of the dreams. Some were awsome involving all kinds of wierd sexual stuff. They were fun for her/us talk about. Some were terrifing and she had to stop as a result of it.

Re: Quittin Dippin. Tips or Tricks??

I actually kicked the habit in October of 09. Figured I would do it during hunting season as it was a change to my regular routine. It worked wonders that way. If I drink at the house I keep a can of the substitute around just in case. It tastes like crap, but it has saved me a couple times. Seems that I get the beer goggles for chew just like women. Its not the best, but it will get you by.

I like that saying cf7go!

That looks like close to 3 free cases of match ammo free... every year... for LIFE! And thats if you don't reload...

Or a 6 day course to Rifle's Only... With Change! </div></div>

Good luck with that.

I quit a 2 pack/day smoking habit before thanksgiving and all I have to show for it (other than a nasty demeanor) is a huge wonder for how I afforded cigarettes every day........

Funny thing about that money there. If you have a Panty 6 attached to you, well, that stuff just vanishes faster than a Bulleit chased rabbit.
I think I may have found the cure to that though. Simply say you are not quitting that way you get the money. Quit anyway, and find a place to stash the money. If you only buy stuff when she's out shopping, keep it in the garage on the work bench or reloading bench or something like that, it might hide real well until about valentine's day or so...

Re: Quittin Dippin. Tips or Tricks??

Well, without reading all the posts on this I can tell that several of them are methods that I have tried in the past, and all work to a point, but the one suggestion that has been mentioned several times, is the one that I will recommend. That is you have to want to quit, and by want I mean truly want it, and then just do what you want. All the substitutes in the world won’t take the craving away, and when it comes down to it the only thing keeping you from using the dip is your willpower, and wanting not to dip. I have been off for a little more than a year, and I still crave it every time I go into a gas station, just today I caught myself staring at the cans at the gas station when I went in to get a fountain Coke. This is the longest I have been without dip, or chew, or snus, or some form of oral smokeless tobacco, since I was 14yo, I am only 32yo now, so I guess I haven’t been using dip for as long as some.

After the first few days the withdrawals let up and life can return to normal, however, the cravings continue, and at the weirdest of times, my mouth is starting to water just reading about dip. But times when you would likely dip will sometimes be hard, but if you work threw it, the cravings pass and weaken. Now I smoke the occasional cigar, probably less than 2/month in the spring and fall, and maybe one a week in the summer, and none in the winter, but the drawback to this is it only makes the cravings for the dib come back, but since I don’t really drink anymore, and I quit dipping, I got to have at least one bad habit, right.

It’s doable, you just have to want it, and having help, either friends or loved ones, or motivation really helps.

Re: Quittin Dippin. Tips or Tricks??

Switching to smoking worked for me. Seriously.

I love Copenhagen. I don't love smoking, so when I switched to smoking instead of dipping, it was easier to quit smoking than it would have been to quit dipping cold turkey.

A lot of the big league ball players use a big wad of the soft chewing gum but u might lose your teeth to cavities so maybe their is a sugar free variety. good luck

Re: Quittin Dippin. Tips or Tricks??

Well, I quit for 5 years once ( cigarette smoking ) and, I started back when I met my wife.

I decided to quit again and I quit 8 days ago and I haven't picked up a cigarette ( and, I won't ).

I quit cold turkey before and, man-o-man was that hard. I'm doing the chantix thing this time and honestly, it's not that hard to quit with chantix.

I'll never allow myself to put another cigarette in my mouth after this time.

I was smoking 2 packs/day and I started when I was 15yrs old and, I'm 45 now and, I quit for about 5yrs in there so, I'm a 25yr smoker that is able to quit without too much trouble with chantix.

There basically aren't any withdrawl symptoms so, you only have to cope with your ticks.... like when you're used to smoking when you wake up or, after a meal.... just remind yourself that you quit and think about something else and, that's about it.

Re: Quittin Dippin. Tips or Tricks??

I tried with Chantix, but be careful with the side effects. The first or second week I was taking it I had a weird experience with it.I woke up in a total state of panic and just sat up in my bed turned my light on and stared at the walls for about two hours or so.It was like I was awake but not.The only way I can explain is like when you are falling asleep not completely asleep or awake and the phone rings or something like that and it startles you,I felt like that for two hours or so.I remember thinking in that period of time I would rather be dead that to be going through that.Needless to say I threw it away !!.I never really thought about hurting myself during that time period but that scared me enough to take all my weapons to my dad's house for a week or so.I have never had any issue like that in my life prior to taking it and non since and it been about a year. Also it makes you hella sick feeling when you take it in the AM.
