I've always been a fan of the Gunny, but he damn near killed me the other evening. I had set dvr to record all of the Lock n' Load series on History Channel. I'm happily shoving supper down my throat, sort of watching R Lee describe bullet types. When he gets to the Full Metal Jacket, he pops off like I haven't seen him do in a while. I laughed my ass off each of the 5 times I reviewed it.

Arlee has that effect on some of us...

Others, he simply throttles beyond recovery...

I <span style="font-style: italic">like</span> the guy...

Re: R. Lee Ermey made me choke

I met the Gunny a couple years ago. I commented that my son and I have alot of fun watching his show (mail call at the time). He replied, "not as much fun as I have doing it!" Which of course had everyone bust out laughing. Very cool guy.

Re: R. Lee Ermey made me choke

Having hung around the guy a little bit over the past 3 years, I can tell you that his enthusiasm for the shooting sports, especially involving junior shooters, is genuine. He is very approachable. He LOVES to shoot his favorite rifle, the M1, but just about anything that goes bang gets him going (as you see on the show). Dennis DeMille has been working with him on the Tubb Rifle recently and his scores are starting to go up. He's turning into a pretty good HP shooter lately.

I suspect he carries around a little bit of regret for the intensity his most famous role presented. That role does not accurately define him as a person I do not believe.

What role? Certainly not this one:

Re: R. Lee Ermey made me choke

I use to provide a lot of the weapons, uniforms, and gear for Mail Call. I can tell you he is a very nice guy and a gentleman. When we were filming the Band of Brother hour long episode of Mail Call I was supose to be on set for an hour while he shot my Luger. My wife wanted to see the filming and came along. It turned out to be four hours with on and off drizzle. When he saw my wife standing there he gave her his seat and made sure the personal assisstant brought her coffee and snacks while she was there.

Re: R. Lee Ermey made me choke

Funny that this is being discussed now. I was talking to my brother about the various shows that are filmed for the likes of the military channel, history, discovery, etc. and asked him about the military personnel who are chosen to be interviewed for the shows. The reason I asked him is there was a show on one of the channels recently about the top 10 most lethal weapons and one of them, the AC130, is what he works on. So he just volunteers that he doesn't know who was at Hurlburt for the top ten show, but a few years back R. Lee Ermey filed a Mail Call episode on base, featuring the AC130, and every one of the AF guys loved having him around and considered him a brother, even though he spends a lot of time around cameras these days.

Re: R. Lee Ermey made me choke

I will +1bazillion on his character in Full Metal Jacket. Some of the best monologue and dialogue I've ever heard.
