Looking to throw a .308 together soon for a trainer, truck beater, could someone tell me if the new actions sold at Northland, Cheaper than dirt, PTG, etc.. are in anyway superior to just buying for instance, a rr prefix matte finish action?? I noticed all the above mentioned shops sell the pretty blued finished ones??‍♂️ And I’m also not sure what prefix they are or if I should worry about it

If you can get by with an out of the box 700 go to a pawn shop and get one,

If you are going to get selective, best to go custom.

Either is fine but you can’t have both. Lot of good custom actions out there at good prices. If you want one let me know. I have a few actions and barreled actions. I have Surgeons and Kelby Atlas. Might have some others.

All my bolt guns are REM700 actions SA or LA. My decision to go REM700 was ubiquity. They are sort of the "ar-15"s of bolt guns, with lots of after mark parts and accessories. You can still have any barrel you want put on the rem700 action by any gunsmith you want ... and that will make it sort of a "custom barrelled action" ...

The REM700 SPS TAC ACC-SD 20 inch barrel .308WIN is amazingly accurate for a wally world gun. I've had 2 of them, but sub 0.75 inch with zero mods, right out of the box, with me shooting them. Actually they are 0.64 avg for prone groups ... both of them. This is with FGMM 175gr 7.62 load.

The other REM700s I have were worked by gunsmiths who installed the barrels. They are smoother, but not more accurate :D
Those both have criterion remage barrels.

When I rebarrel, I will be going with barlein barrels and a local gun smith. My most accurate rifle right now is actually a stoner ... gap-10v2 .308WIN ...
