I was just wondering what the closest you guys would shoot some 55 pmc (or similar plinking ammo) at 3/8 ar500. I'm not talking about factory or dealer warning that say 100 yards. I'm talking like 10*-20* angled downward at 15-20~ ish yards... bad idea? not a problem? If 3/8's can't handle it would 1/2 ar500? I can't remember for the life of me what we were using at our range in VA.

The thickness isn't the issue, even angled down you can still get splatter and bullet fragments coming back at you. During training in 29 Palms a few years ago we found min safe was about 50 meters. At 35 a buddy of mine caught a bunch of shit to his groin protector and upper thighs.
1: I got pretty decent splatter on angled 3/8 ar500 target with handgun at 10-12 yds...
2: At 50 with same steel with 55gr fmj you'll get light cratering
I gotta say "bad idea". Close range rifle = non-deflective and dirt berm. Your steel won't last (even 1/2"+) and your begging to catch lead or a jacket to the face. If you are desiring reactive targets, consider clay pigeons on clothesline with clothespins, or dense polymer targets (though they dont work well w/ rifle rounds, typically), jugs full of water...etc.

Bowling pins are great also, go to a bowling alley and ask to purchase some old pins they can't use anymore. I have 12 pins has lasted me years. 22lr knocks them over. Only blown one up, 12 gauge slugs is what it took to blow it up.
We shoot at 50yds all the time. Even hit em with the 308 @ 50yds. Not even a dent. Believe its 1/2 in ar500
Ricochets are a bitch, trust me. I won't shoot fmj at steel at less than 100, just the scars telling me a shorter range isn't worth it.
We shoot steel at 25 yards all the time-- keep it angled because angry bits of the jackets will come back with a vengeance.
