Recipes for 700 SPS Varmint 26" .308?

This is such a cheap--er, I mean ubiquitous? common rifle I figured I'd reach out for any favorite recipes. I don't have QL and I haven't gone through calcs for OBT/OCW. Not sure how much stock matters as long as the barrel is floated?

Please specify how well vetted they are too, if they're new or if you're consistently getting the same results. things like scatter nodes are good to know too.

Please include as much detail as you're able/willing
-brass
-relevant case prep details like HS, trim length, neck tension if you know it
-OAL/COL
-velocities
-temp sensitivities etc

etc.

Any info is welcome but please only stock Remington barreled actions in Varmint contour, 26". thanks!

With Varget and Lapua brass you should find good nodes around 43 and 44 with 175 smk’s, 168’s tend to like one grain more than 175’s and with the 155 scenar I was up around 47 grain before I saw the best accuracy. I use both Winchester and Lapua brass and the node centers tend to be about .2-.3 grains higher with Winchester brass. I have found the all of the above will jump well and use a OAL between 2.815-2.835 depending on the bullets used. 175’s with 43-43.2 are right around 2600-2620 with the higher 44 grain charge adding about 50fps, IIRC my 155 scenar load was running around 2875.

This one is still in development. Last year the only powder I could find was Norma 202, I got several pounds. Not a lot of data on it but the 700 seems to like it:

I use lapua brass sized with a .337 bushing die trimmed to 2.010. Br2 primers. 175 smk's. 43.5 gr varget. Seated to 2.950 (you will have to single load or modify your action and use alpha type 2 mags). These run right at 2600 fps and will shoot in the high .3's or low .4's in my rifle. The only thing done to my barreled action is the notch cut for longer oal, a polished crown, and a threaded barrel (still 26").

What is your jump at 2.95, or is that jammed? Lots of freebore in these rifles I guess.

That is a redding bushing. I use a type s full length and the same bushing in a Wilson neck sizer.

It is still jumping at 2.95. That is just the farthest I can load 175's and still keep them in the case. I don't have the tools to measure free bore, but know how to do it with bullets. The problem is the longest bullet I have is a 220smk and I can't even get it to touch the lands if it is in the case. Very long throat on mine, but it works.

Daniel, I might try those tomorrow but I have 210 primers and virgin Lapua so I won't be able to do 2.010 I don't think. Do you think it will work with the brass straight out of the box or should I expand the neck then use my .336 forster bushing bump?

Recipes for 700 SPS Varmint 26" .308?

I have used it straight out of the box and shot under 1/2 Moa. Lapua is good stuff...just straighten out any dinged necks before seating a bullet. Also, make sure that you are not jamming the bullet into the lands. I doubt you will be, but there is a chance that Remington got a chamber right. If you jam you could cause pressure spikes. Btw-- don't trim or size the new brass. Leave the primer pockets alone...just load them. There is a reason lapua brass is so expensive and it is because it is uniform and ready to go out of the box...except for the occasional neck that gets dinged in shipping.

Had to share a good one from doctordoctor...my only complaint is that the 4064 stunk like a fart every time I shot. My buddy beside me said it "smells like dog shit" lol

I worked up from 42.5 (not a great group, could have been me) but got .42 MOA at 42.7, .41 MOA at 42.9 and .30 MOA at the recommended 43.1. Right on!



I seated at 2.85 COAL.

Prochrono put 43.1 MVs at 2650, 2677, 2677 (gotta get a magnetospeed)

D1-D3 is 42.9gr, 1.54" at 380. M/V 2661, 2629, 2656.

I might just call it good at 43.0

2699 FPS average

I'll check that out. Do you know if LC uses different brass for LR? I have a bunch of LC range pickups cleaned and prepped (I think they were Freedom Munitions loads)

I dont know. However, the temp when I shot this on the 10th was around 55-60 degrees. Now Im wondering if the load will be OK when the temperature starts to climb and velocity increases. Anyone know? The projected velocity at 100 degrees is supposed to push it up over 2800 FPS. I dont know if that is going to be a safe load or not.

Im new to this and still trying to figure this out.

Wasn't all that impressive at 200 yards .6 moa average, but at extended ranges it's awesome, at 500 yards I had 1.58 inch vertical dispersion 5 shots. I just got in from shooting 825 yards and had only 2.91 inch vertical dispersion. ( 5 shots)
I just need to learn to read the wind better, still well under 1 moa horizontal spread with this load.

Thanks! I was very surprised when I walked up to the target, can't wait to ring some steel this weekend! I was getting ejector marks at 44.5 gr Varget so I backed down a bit, 44.1 ended up being the most accurate anyways. I don't have a chrono but putting 2655 fps in Ballistic AE had me right on at 825 yards. How did 1000 yards go for you!?

I want to try the 44.1V/178.

The 1000 was fun. We shot at 800, 900 and 1000. I tried a few combos, I think the one that worked best was VV N150 with 190SMK but I need to run some 10-shot groups this weekend to confirm. 175 SMK with 43.0 of 4064 was good at 800 but didn't keep it together at 1000. I thought they were coming out right at or just below 2650 but apparently they went trans/subsonic, the puller in the pit said they "sounded funny".

24" Remington 5r. I shot the quantico match 1 time and managed a 467. That was my first time past 500 yards.
