I will probably get a base or some rings soon, as well as a case. However, I am still looking for a used XCR, or at least a barreled action in .300 winmag. I have been looking at scopes, and would love to have a Nightforce 56mm, but who am I kidding, I just don't have the money. I absolutely love Bushnell, but have some questions. Do I really need FFP? Do I need illum? What is the difference in the Bushnell Elite 4200 Tactical and the regular Elite Tactical? I know they are doing with 4200 and so on and so forth, but is the regular Bushnell Elite 4200 Tactical a good scope? I found one for around $400 in 6-24X50, and it is not illum or FFP. Please give me some advice on which scope to get for my .300. I will be primarily hunting with it, along with just shooting at the farm. Not really wanting to spend a thousand dollars either, but if someone wants to sell me a Nightforce for that price, then thanks. Thanks to all. </div></div>
First, examining your priorities before you purchase is a good thing. And weighing whether you really need FFP and Illumination is correct.
If I were you I would also ponder hard over really needing a 6-24 power scope. Because based on your proposed use, you really don't. A 6-24x50mm even a good one like Bushnell's 4200 non FFP one come with certain inherent limitations.
As to what scope you should look at:
The Bushnell 4200 line is a good one, but the one you should consider is the 3-12x44MM ILL FFP MIL/MIL. They were selling at retail in the mid $500 range, just a few months ago, so finding a used one in your price range should not be too hard.
Other scopes you should look at:
SWFA SS 3-9x42mm FFP MIL/MIL
Vortex PST SFP scope line: 2.5-10 and 4-16 MIL/MIL
One other comment: Think of your rifle, then the scope, rings and bases, as parts to complete a system. Buy your rifle first, then build your system, around that.
Buying scope, rings, bases, BEFORE you buy your rifle, is putting the cart before the horse.
Best of luck,
Bob
