Re: Remington 700 30-06 Sniper Rifle Advice
I'm likely one of the "ardent supporters of the .30-'06 chambering" that Greg wrote about.
My -06 was my first precision rifle and though it is limping along right now in need of a new tube and some TLC it is still shooting well. The barrel has almost 5000rd through it and probably 2000 of them were steel jacketed mil-surp MG bullets... I didn't have the money for match bullets in college and I wanted to shoot...
Anyway, I've hit everything from 100 to 1700 yd with it, with a 10tw barrel you can shoot the 240 SMK's (a 1.62" long bullet) and mine has really shown to like the 208 Amax humming along with H4831sc or RL22.
A good barrel and good ammo (Winchester makes very good brass and while Lapua would be nice I have not seen a reason to spend $1/case when $0.40/case Win brass has netted me a 1/2 MOA 600yd rifle).
There are bigger, sexier calibers out there but the 30-06 does a plethora of things really well. Anything the 308 can do in performance the 30-06 can do, my old 260 shooting 140 Amax's is actually not quite as flat/straight as my 30-06 shooting 208's... the recoil difference between the two is certainly substantial though.
Like Greg said above, the 280 Rem does everything the 30-06 can do, I've had a 280 and it was a great rifle. The recoil with 180gr bullets is pretty similar to the 30-06 with 180gr bullets. The difference is what that recoil buys in terms of ballistic performance. The 280 overall has better numbers for punching paper/steel than a 300 WM and pretty similar barrel life.
The heavy 7mm bullets still retain plenty of mass and choices for hunting duty as well.
Something in 7 or 30 cal mated to the appx 68gr of water capacity coming with a 30-06 case will net the shooter a highly capable rifle.
