I realize that the 30-06 is not really considered by most, a long round. However, I'd like as much input from this Forum on the Pro/Cons and potential builders of Remington 700 30-06 Custom Rifles for "long range" usage 0-1,000 yards.

Thank you.

In the future you may want to leave the word "sniper rifle" out of your heading, and asking about this "sniper round". It makes you look like 15,000 other teenagers that frequent this site. In the future "precision" in place of "sniper", in the context you have used , would be better.

Here is a rifle I had built in 30-06:

The '06 is a great cartridge and is just as accurate as any other cartridge if built on a decent platform and in the hands of an experienced rifleman/reloader. The ammunition industry does not support the '06 very well as far as factory match rounds so real performance will likely require reloading. There is less and less surplus ammo available although it is still out there in some quantity, personally I feel this is a non issue.
The '06 is far more flexible than a 308Win but falls far short of the 300Win Mag. The '06 is not a poor man's 300WM, it stands on its own ballistically in the middle of the 308Win and the 300WM. It has style and class being the father of many modern cartridges including the 308Win.
You will not be handicapped by your choice of the '06 for a precision rifle. You may be shunned by the cool kids though, and always be last picked for the team. Make sure you pick a decent smith that will use a match reamer, not all chambers are created equal. My pick in reamers would be the Serengeti 30-06 made popular by German Salazar.

Thank you for your suggestions and information. My intention is not to insult anyone on this site. However, I am a novice when it comes to precision shooting past 600 yards. All constructive suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated.

Re: Remington 700 30-06 Sniper Rifle Advice

Several members here are ardent supporters of the .30-'06 chambering as a do-most-everything caliber. I am close to being among them; the only qualification being that I've been having a harder time finding true LR facilities within my limited travel radius lately.

I own a Garand and a pair of .30-'06 sporters; one of which is a good enough shooter to do light duty in a tactical venue. It's a preference of mine to maintain a bolt gun that shoots the same chambering as my semis, but currently, the Garand is my only serious semi.

I personally believe that pretty much anything the .30-'06 will do, the .280 Rem will do at least as well, but there doesn't seem to be any realistic way to get a Garand rebarrelled as a .280.

I chose 30-06 based on factory match ammo availibility, cost of ammo, and Long Action based/compatible to allow me to use what ever caliber I would like in the future. Looking into the 6mm-6.5mm-7mm range.

I would recommend getting a 1-10 twist barrel.

I have having Short Action Customs perform all the necessary work on my R700 build.

Re: Remington 700 30-06 Sniper Rifle Advice

I'm likely one of the "ardent supporters of the .30-'06 chambering" that Greg wrote about.

My -06 was my first precision rifle and though it is limping along right now in need of a new tube and some TLC it is still shooting well. The barrel has almost 5000rd through it and probably 2000 of them were steel jacketed mil-surp MG bullets... I didn't have the money for match bullets in college and I wanted to shoot...

Anyway, I've hit everything from 100 to 1700 yd with it, with a 10tw barrel you can shoot the 240 SMK's (a 1.62" long bullet) and mine has really shown to like the 208 Amax humming along with H4831sc or RL22.

A good barrel and good ammo (Winchester makes very good brass and while Lapua would be nice I have not seen a reason to spend $1/case when $0.40/case Win brass has netted me a 1/2 MOA 600yd rifle).

There are bigger, sexier calibers out there but the 30-06 does a plethora of things really well. Anything the 308 can do in performance the 30-06 can do, my old 260 shooting 140 Amax's is actually not quite as flat/straight as my 30-06 shooting 208's... the recoil difference between the two is certainly substantial though.

Like Greg said above, the 280 Rem does everything the 30-06 can do, I've had a 280 and it was a great rifle. The recoil with 180gr bullets is pretty similar to the 30-06 with 180gr bullets. The difference is what that recoil buys in terms of ballistic performance. The 280 overall has better numbers for punching paper/steel than a 300 WM and pretty similar barrel life.

The heavy 7mm bullets still retain plenty of mass and choices for hunting duty as well.

Something in 7 or 30 cal mated to the appx 68gr of water capacity coming with a 30-06 case will net the shooter a highly capable rifle.

Re: Remington 700 30-06 Custom Rifle Advice

My only precision rifle at the moment is an .06 built off a Rem 700 action. Has a Broughton barrel and McRee stock. I have had it out to 1160yds running a 200gr SMK.

Re: Remington 700 30-06 Custom Rifle Advice

I am shocked MontanaMarine has not chimed in. I have seen his load developments for his 208AMAX/RL17/RL22 combos going well past the 1100yd mark from a 20 inch 06.

Its an old round that excels with the new components available. I didn't pick the 06, more like it picked me. I wanted a bolt gun, not a clue what to get. When I learned about this particular round, read its history and its still bright future, I figure I will stick to it with this rifle. Handloads on a stock action and a sporter barrel net .75 @ 100yds and caccurate hits to 550yds with handloads. Once I get rid of this pencil barrel, and a clean-up job on the action, I expect it to only get better.
