remington 700 5r rebarrel suggestions

well i think i made a mistake in buying a used rifle, i just bought a rem 700 5r in .308. i have been trying to do some load development, and it wont group well at all. 3" groups at 200 yards has been my best so far. 200 yards is all i have to work with right now. i plan to get some 175 gr fgmm this weekend to take my reloading out of the equation. i was told the rifle has had 400 down the pipe. i am very disappointed with this rifle so far. so if it comes to a new barrel witch one would you guy recommend.

So, it's shooting 1.5 moa.

What load?

What scope, rings and base?

Is this from a bench, prone, off the hood of a truck?

Can you shoot better than 1.5 moa?

What other centerfire rifles do you have experience with?

Did the previous owner show you any groups?

My 5R was close to a .5 moa rifle out of the box.
Doesn't mean yours was, but the vast majority are at least .75 moa rifles.

Buy some fgmm, shoot at 100 yards then report back.

shooting prone with a support bag in the rear
i have a dpms .308 gas gun with a 24" barrel and it shoots sub moa at 200. i dont belive it's me.

the owner did not show me any shot groups, could have been helpful, i just took his word for it. i just got excited that gun i was looking for showed up of a forum for sell. im pretty sure it was a dumb move, so please dont beat me up for that.

i was just suprised that my gas gun that i reloaded withen book specs out shot a well knowen bolt gun, witch is why i think the barrel is shot out.

Have YOU cleaned it?

If not then maybe it needs it, if so maybe shoot it some more and see if it settles in. How many rounds did you put through it?

Really doubt its the barrel unless the previous owner somehow damaged the crown or the rifling. When you say " load development" did you perform a ladder test? Was 1.5 moa the best load out of all that were tested? I didn't spend any time with amaxs in my 5r as I found a nice load with varget and 175 smks very quickly. I'd say spend some more time at the loading bench and range before you decide to drop $600 on a rebarrel job IMHO.

YEah, check all action bolts, rings, bases and check scope. THen try 1 or 2 different factory loads. I bet you will find the answer you are looking for. Good luck

try some factory loaded Match ammo, after you check rings and bases

Also shoot at 100 yards after check

personally if you have a low mileage 5R, I would part with the barreled action before going to the expense of a rebarrel, if you are set on a rebarrel, start with just an action and have a "known or reputable smith" install a quality barrel Krieger, Mike Rock, Bartlein, Obermeyer, etc.

+1 - Sound advice. Hope it works out, as getting a rifle you've been looking forward to getting, and then having disappointing results really stinks. Good luck and let us know how things turn out. From everything I've read, the 5R is supposed to be an outstanding rifle.

Clean it up good once then shoot it. It might tighten up after it gets some foweling in it. Don't clean it for a couple hundred rounds after.

Also make sure all bolts are torqued to spec. Something might be loose or overtightened and causing flex.

Inspect the crown, make sure the previous owner didn't think he had a bayonet on it.
