Although it's no problem to just remove the bolt the way you are, which is the way you have to do it on something like an XP-100, it's not exactly convenient.
The bolt stop is in direct contact with the button under the trigger group (it's not the spring that moves it as was said above). The button is part of a one piece stamping that rides on two pins in the trigger group. My guess would be that the stamping got bent a little out of shape where it contacts the bolt stop. It would be an easy fix, you'd just have to pull the action from the stock and bend it with some pliers until it worked correctly.
Before you do that though, you are pressing the button before the bolt has reached the stop, correct? If you're pulling the bolt rearward into the stop while pushing the button, there will be too much friction to overcome with the release button.
