Remington 700 build

I wanted to get a tactical rifle but i am on a little bit of a budget so i went with the Remington 700 SPS Tactical aac-sd. I have a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 on the way. As of now that is all i have.

Any advice on stocks? I was looking at the HS-precision stocks or the Bell and Carlson tactical stocks. For $300-$500 do these stocks make much of an improvement from houge overmolded stock? I have been told to save money and go with a much nicer stock later down then road.

I have a 700 AAC-SD and YES the stock makes a huge difference! I put mine in a B&C Light Tactical A3 and I really like it. Tightened up from 1" at 100yds to 1/2" at 100yds. However, I am now drooling over the XLR chassis. But I will probably build another rifle around that.

My advice is to wait and save up for a nicer stock like a McMillan or Manners. The overall quality is much better, and you will be much more satisfied overall. You seem to have a good start so far, so just build it up part by part until its exactly what you want.

the fully adjustable B+C medalist is tough to beat for the price, down the road you can sell it or add a DBM

the other major improvement should be to the trigger - the x-mark pretty much blows

Aics 1.5 from eurooptic or milehighshooting . Just over 800 bucks and it comes with detachable box mags and you don't have to bed it.

if you like the shape, I tried twice to like it - could have had mine used for under 600

don't "have" to bed a B+C either, but why not - it takes all of about 10 min

This is good advice It's exactly what I did. 3 times... 3 different stocks so far The McMillan A5 with adjustable cheek piece, adjustable rear spacer and badger detachable bottom metal is my favorite fits like a glove.

I'd have to say the AICS Chassis would probably fit like a glove too. Seems like a lot of guys favor them here on the Hide.

FWIW I really don't like the 700P factory Remington stocks, although I have shot extremely well with one. I got about 1/2 moa with the Hogue overmold on a 20" SPS Tactical. Bugholes with the 700P stock. If that's what you can do for now it will help but ultimately you'll want some thing different.

I B&C are very nice stocks. I would go with the adjustable if it were me. If not, the B&C 2956 Light Tactical for the R700 would be my next choice. HS-P is great as well, would personally take the B&C over the HS-P.

McMillans and Manners are definitely better stocks and "A Lot More Money," no doubt about that. But the B&C is a very good stock as well. The B&C has its own unique look and in some cases, I have found myself using their stocks over a McMillan to gain a certain look.

McMillian or Manners. Or keep the houge. If you want a chassis type stock thats another thing. But if you want a regular type stock, personaly I would keep what you have till you can get what you want. I used to take those halfway steps to try to get to what I wanted and was never sastisfied. I ended up getting what I wanted but it cost me twice as much doing it. You probably made a good choice in optic, I don't have a PST but I hear good things, I say wait till you can get Exactly what you really want. If you truly want to be happy with it then I would think thats what you need. Good luck.

And don't skimp on bases and rings too. They are just as important as anything else on the rifle.

GAP took the jewell out of my surgeon and replaced it with the x-mark. It breaks clean and George said it is much safer and more durable. I'm not saying they are the best by any means. But they "clean up nice" if you know how to tune em up. I was very worried at first that it would suck but after feeling it and firing it my worries are gone. But I do agree with you on an out of the box one.They don't feel to great. I have 3 factory x-mark trigger and only 1 feels ok. not great but OK

Look in the for sale section as there are always used stocks. If you pick it up used, don't like it, you can sell it and not loose much/if any money.

I have a similar setup.

With the Hogue I could do about 3/4 moa, but I was careful not to rest the rifle towards the muzzle (AKA no bipod) because that stock would end up rubbing the barrel.

Finally got enough money and bought McMillan A4, I like it so far. Haven't tried to put a group together with it yet, it was too windy this weekend, but the barrel floats very nicely now.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think im leaning towards saving up for a AICS 1.5. I love the way it looks, but i have never actually had one in my hands. To me its more important for it to feel right so hopefully i can get my hands on one before i buy it. I have done some research on AICS 1.5 and I really have not found much complaints.

Would anyone recommend anything different in that price range?

The AICS is the best value if you're on a budget and want it all. If you like the looks of them you should def get one. Resale value's are great if it's not for you.

If you go McMillan or Manners - figure for another few hundred to send it out to have someone bed it properly and then several hundred more to have DBM bottom metal inletted and installed.

With an AICS, it's all included for one price. Just simply tourque two action bolts and you're ready to go shooting.

You could also look at the Manners with mini-chassis system, work is all done but still, more expensive than an AICS.

My rifle came in an HS stock w/the aluminum bedding block. It's been great and a cheaper alternative to the McMillan/Manners. But now with the the AICS it's 10,000-times more comfortable to shoot (for me) which makes being accurate much easier and less work.

Has the adj. cheek riser option like the AICS.

Never handled one but had a McMillan A4 which is similar. Again the AICS feels more comfortable (to me) - you might be different.

From what I hear the Manners W/MCS are the Cat's Ass.

Nothing wrong with a B&C stock, I had an AAC SD but got rid of it before i had a chance to re stock it. I'll probably get another soon since i miss it and throw another Weaver Tactical Grand Slam from midway on it and a B&C. Alot of bang for the buck between that rifle and scope. Good choice on the rifle for sure. Post pics once you get it together and good luck

You shouldn't need to do any extra work as that one has the mini chassis.

I'd think about it for a couple weeks before you order something though as you've changed your mind a few times already today. haha

Also look at the pistol grip stockside upgrades you can get for the AICS.

time and time again i see folks trying to buy the on target, see guys with $8k rigs go down range to look at targets scratching their heard,spend some time learning how to shoot.

I am not trying to buy my way onto the target. I have been told by multiple people that the hogue overmolded stock is not very good and that it should be changed out for a higher quality stock. I agree that you can not just drop 8k on a rifle and expect it to shoot perfectly without knowing how to shoot. That is not my intention. Just putting on a new stock doesn't change the shooters capabilities, only the rifles. I am only looking to fix the problem with the hogue stock and if i am going to do this, i want it to be done the right way.

who ever stated to upgrade your trigger,,,,,, Listen to them. that is the most important thing you can do. <--------my opinion... Buy a used AICS, then upgrade it if you want. I did that and am very happy. I like the manners better, but at 900 used it is steep.

If you can shoot bug holes and your rifle can't no crime or shame in eliminating the variables holding you back. Whether it be a stock, trigger, bullets, training on marksmanship etc. If it's your passion to pursue it, have at it. No sense in doing it half assed. Your on the right track Zan700. It just so happens some of the best equipment crosses over into the Tactical realm.

I'm guessing hardly any one really needs a Firearm period. Should we have one, yes. And one that works reliably. Go get it my man.

That's not what we were getting at. I agree the Hogue stock does need to be replaced, but you don't have to save 5 extra months just to get a MCM or Manners. Get you a B&C medalist, skim bed it and spend the rest on a Timney trigger and more ammo and I'll guarantee you will shoot better.

But do you want detachable box mags and to not have to bed it?

AICS!!! + Timney, that's exactly what I did, I'm very happy.

AICS 1.5
Timney 510
Badger 20moa Rail
Seekins Medium Rings
SWFA 5-20x50 + sunshade and butler creeks.

It shoots better than I do.

I see both sides here but I feel like i would rather just save up and get a stock so i wont have to bed it (Manners, AICS, ETC.). I dont know how to bed a stock and i would not want to do it wrong. My scope should be coming in within a week, and at this point i just want to shoot the damn rifle. When i finally do decide what i am doing i will be sure to let everyone know. Thanks again for all your opinions.

You have selected a good rifle and good optics.

First, put your money into decent mounting hardware.
SWFA has "kits" that include TPS rings and picatinny bases for around 220 bucks, a worthy investment.

Second, yes the hogue sucks as a precision type stock. They are decent for a hunting rifle, very comfortable.

Try to get behind an AI chassis in different positions. They are almost a love/hate thing.
They are very well made and a top of the line chassis, but not for everyone.

I went with XLR, as it was a bit lighter and I prefer the AR15 type ergo's, though there are new pistol grip skins from AI.

If you have the money, by all means spend it on a quality chassis, if money is tight, then B&C light tactical or M40 style stock is very hard to beat.
They are well made and rock solid.

Unless you really want a boat anchor to drag around, the fully adjustable B&C is way too heavy. Great for a range gun/F class type of affair. Too heavy for a field gun IMHO.

Excellent choice on rifle, off shelf has almost everything one needs. I put mine on an AICS 2.0 and was very happy.

After thinking about it for about a week, here is my game plan:

Buy a B&C M40 style stock and maybe put in a Timney trigger (someone suggested a timney earlier). I plan on keeping that set up for a while. My friend is planning on getting an AICS down the road for his 700 so i will try that out. If i feel it is worth it for me to spend the money on it, ill sell the B&C and get myself an AICS.

Ill try and get some pictures up in a couple weeks.

There are loads of stocks to choose from trying to find one that works for you, is a task. I read loads of reviews, posts, and manufactures claims. When all was said and done I went with a McRee. It uses all the same mags as AI, or can be a non repeater. Loads of adjustments, simple installation, and options. The best point is no need to bed the barrel and can be switch to another barrel and receiver. Being a left handed it fits with no special mods.

Zan700, fill out your profile, now go to the link up forum and find out out where the local Hide members go to shoot. Introduce yourself and go see what everyone else is running, ask questions, look through scopes, fondle stocks. Now you have the rifle in hand, scopes on its way, got quality base and rings in hand? Seekins as an example. Do you reload, match ammo ain't cheap, got a bore guide and a plan to break her in. Now go shoot and have fun, take some time and see what she does, then buy once, cry once and be done with it.

I was hesitant at first because it wasn't a "Manners/McMillan" but found out real quick it shoots way better than i can in that stock and it only cost me about $240w/ shipping cause i got it on sale. now that doesn't meant i am not constantly looking for a good deal on a higher quality Manners stock but for now i am confident to take it to any distance because it wont be the stock that is the limiting factor.

But if you have the $$$ definitely go Manners with mini chassis that what i have my eye on.

And they are ugly as sin and just don't feel right. i still haven't figured out why they haven't started offering just the adjustable cheek rise on the Medalist A2 cause that would be the best low budget stock hands down.

Here is the new rifle. Not much yet but its a start! Vortex PST 6-24, PRI rings and base, and an AAC brake.

Plan on getting a new stock with a harris bipod down the road and a new bolt knob.

Don't be afraid of the B&C stocks, I've got a 300RUM custom in one that shoots lights out constantly. Just skim bedded it and went shooting! Now, that being said, the current project is going in a Manners....clear as mud I'm sure..
