Wanting to know if anyone has this rifle an how did they like it/ how did it perform. Back brief..... my sons turning 12 in July wanting to get him a hunting rifle for here in Nevada for the mountains/hunting for mule deer/antelope etc. I'm looking for a solid light weight rifle for him I haven't stepped into the 6.5 game yet but iv heard alot of very good feedback about it for distance/recoil/hunting. I'm still using a 308 175gr sierra match. I have over a decade behind long guns an 6yrs as a army sniper. I have been working with him prior to, an super excited to pass the torch an teach him these valuable life skills. plan to have him shooting 400-500m consistanly alone before season starts. But of course I will be there feeding him dope an wind calls....appreciate anyone's input who comments. Thanks

For a factory rifle that's more likely to be a longterm keeper (and easier to sell if not) - Tikka.
Dont get him a 6.5, he will be whooping your ass soon enough at 500 yards and youll have a hard time dealing with that so then youll have to build yourself one too.
Personally Id rather a ruger american predator (same total weight but heavier barrel with a threaded muzzle to add a break for ear muffed range days and you can get a model with aics mags) than the rem mountain and put the 300 buck savings into a better scope for him.

I'd suggest the tikka too, action is smoother than my stiller by a bunch, stock trigger is good. My 10 year old nephew weighed about 60 lbs when he started shooting my 6.5 shortly after starting to shoot a 22. He was knocking over steel rams at 550 yards and watching them fall in the scope on his third shot shooting the 6.5. It was prone with a bipod in a chassis with a brake.
Brakes are noisy but it really reduce recoil which reduces flinching which is especially good for kids, and it allows the them to stay on target easier during recoil.

Myself and several of my cousins all have Rem 700 Mountain rifles from the early 90's (.280Rem, .270Win, .30-06, 7mm-08). They've accounted for a lot of Pennsylvania game.
I've only ever shot deer from 5 yards to 300 yards with mine. But plenty of coyotes/fox/groundhogs have been killed with my .280Rem between 300 - 400 yards.
Is it a tack driver? - no....especially not after about 3 quick shots. That little barrel gets hot FAST! But it's a great handling gun, especially the short action versions.
So, we've never had issues with any of our factory Rem 700's (we've got about 2 dozen in the family). But I also wouldn't hesitate to take the advice on the Tikka or Ruger american above. We've got a few Ruger American's in the family (a cousin with a .243 and my wife's .300BLK Ranch Rifle) both shoot great, but they feel like a cheap rifle. Makes it easy to take into the woods knowing it will deliver when you need it to, but you won't cry when it get's dropped or scratched by brush.

No experience with a Rem 700 mountain SS, but I have owned Rem700s and a Tikka in the past. Tikka is the better choice in my opinion.
If you go to GrabAGun.com (no affiliation) and request a quote for a Stainless Tikka T3X Lite in 6.5 Creedmoor you should get a quote back for $600. Easily a better value than the Remington (again, in my opinion)

You and your son will enjoy shooting the 6.5 Creedmore and hunting together. I’d show him both rifles and let him choose - either choice is sound. Personally, I’d go 700, but I am biased. Enjoy your time with your son, they grow up fast. Teach him all you know.
If sticking w/.308 I'd choose this for a Jr Operator... Remington 700 SPS Tactical 16.5" Barrel which will still get you out to your 550 yds. target range. Has the 1:10 barrel for 175 SMKs. The weight difference is +/- 1 lb from the Mountain Rifle and it's available in .223 which might also be a good starting point.
Put it into a smaller stock that will fit him better with adjustable LOP PST093 and screw a good brake on the threaded muzzle.
Don't expect much love for Remington 700s on this site.

My vote is for a threaded SPS tactical in .308 also. Mine shoots well and is my go to rifle nowadays. I think it is a good inexpensive rifle that he can learn on and modify as he and his skill level grows. Enjoy the time with him, some of my best memories with my dad were shooting and hunting as a kid. Wanting to impress my dad was always motivation for me to do my best, and I'm sure it will be for him also.
Thats reprickulous. I have a Remington 700 5R stainless in 223, smooth as silk action, and shoots sub MOA out of the box. Paid $900 for it. The first group I shot at 100. Hornady 75 grain. The last group I shot after putting it in a Magpul Hunter was about .35 MOA in a light wind but no photo. Im a hac shooter, the rifle will do better than I can. I also have the same rifle in 308 and it will shoot at least that well.
