Remington 700 Police missing markings

Hey everyone,
I have what I believe to be a Remington 700 Police in .300 WIN MAG, after doing some reading I found out I could check the rifle's manufacture date by checking the barrel code, but when I went to do this I discovered that it's barrel date code is missing. Upon further inspection, I found it is also missing a test mark on the right hand side. It appears to be the factory barrel, as the finish is the same and it bears Remington's stamp.

I sent Remington an email, but haven't heard back, so I figured i'd ask if anyone here has any ideas as to why this could be.

Terrible with factory ammo, just started handloading for it and found the problem to be an excessively long throat, max spec COAL listed for .300WM is 3.34", but with Nosler 190gr ABLR I'm sitting at 3.617" COAL to touch the lands....
Initial testing shows a pretty promising load with this projectile though.

My 700P really likes Hornady 212 grain ELD-X and Lapua 220 grain Scenar L, both loaded to 3.5" COL.
No one really loads 300 WM to CIP standard COL anyways.

My Father sent a 700 in 7mm RM that would not chamber Factory or handloads. The factory replaced the barrel at no charge but it was missing some of the proof marks when it came back. He called Illion and theres a mark under the stock that proves it’s a replacement barrel. Seems like 20+ years ago. The details are foggy now.

Ive had my 700P in 300WM for close to 2 years. I have shot just over 1000 rounds with it, at both the range and some various competitions. I have yet to take any game with it, but that day will come as well.
I never could get mine to shoot well with lighter bullets, but like I wrote before, it really likes the 212 grain ELD-X over a nice wad of H1000 powder.
The furtest I have shot with it is 1090 meters and I had a first round hit on a 12"x12" steel plate at that distance. So the rifle shoots, you just need to know what to feed it with.

Thanks for the advice mate, I have my doubts that it's been sent back to Remington stateside for barrel replacement being in Australia, but I'll pop the stock off tomorrow and have a look

Thanks Vargmat, I tried 210gr Nos ABLR and 230gr Berger Hybrids also, but 190's looked most promising so far

Why worry if the barrel is replaced or not? Your bolt looks way nicer than mine which has been a bit scratched and rubbed raw after about 13-1400 cycles.

The police is also Parkerized.

And they don't make a 700 varmint in 300wm.

You're right, but i was still curious about it's super long throat. The rifle was pretty badly copper fouled when I got it, I've scrubbed it over and over with various cleaning agents and got the worst of it out, but some is still visible in the grooves. I was more wondering if the rifles throat had been shot out to this point, but found that odd as the rest of it looked in perfect condition outside of the bore.
Surely it's not designed with a throat so long as to make it useless with factory ammo?

I feel your pain, I work nights so it's a bit of a struggle for me to get to the range sometimes too. Appreciate the help though, thanks mate

Yes Remingtons are well known for having a long freebore. Mine still shot great with a mile a jump, never tried any factory ammo, but I couldn't touch the lands and keep a 208 a max in the case.

Remington is notorious for obscenely long freebore. My first LR rifle was a 700 AAC-SD in 308, and I had to load 175SMKs to something like 2.95" COAL to reach the lands pretty much out of the box. I ended up loading them to 2.925" COAL and got sub-MOA groups and decent SDs out of that rifle.

Lucky I guess, I went through so many different factory loads before starting to handload for it, they were all shocking. Waste of a few hundred dollars

I was jumping bullets in the .2 range in mine, not .020, .200. Shot great. I never shoot any factory anything except 22LR.

So I took the stock off, no actual stampings to be found anywhere on the barrel or action, just these markings on the stock, not sure that they have anything to do with the rifle itself. 1.16 could certainly be a date, but surely they wouldn't just write that on the inside of the stock....

My rifle also has that, even at a 3.502" COL, I am still not tuching the lands. But it shoots great, so it is what it is. A few hundred rounds more and I am rebarreling and rebuilding it to something that resembles a Mk13mod5 anyways.

It now has a Nightforce 5.5-22x56 NXS with Nightforce Ultralight rings. And the pictured PM2 is back on my 6,5x47 Lapua match rifle.
The rifle itself started out just like yours, a bone stock Remington 700 Police.

I suppose it's not a problem at the moment anyway, when it does eventually get too long at least a rebarrel should be all thats needed to fix it

The Remington 300 WM Varmint is called the Sendero. Same build type, but long action.
