I'm partial to GA Precision. They're practically next door to Badger Ordnance, and can install a Badger DBM for you no problem.
You could look at PTG for purchasing the bottom metal and they'll inlet your stock to match it. Alternately, you could look at selling the HS stock and trying something else that is already inlet for DBM if you want to try something new.
CDI will sell you a bottom metal for 210 bucks and then install it for free if you ship the stock to em.

CDI did one on a cert. took too much out and tried to tell me over the phone how to make it work. That was very expensive garbage.
I have it shooting 52 SMK. Easily found a load and it is reliable. Was to go PD shooting last summer but I got hurt. It will be hoing with me this year.
The previous 5R 223 I had rechambered to load properly a 69 SMK ,030 off by Mark @ SAC. He did a superb job and it should have been a keeper. He is not interested in that work now. This one might shoot another bullet but it is dedicated for now.

You could go with H&S precision BM. Drop in fit on their stocks. Just need to remove a tiny piece of foam below the action. Nice kit. A little pricey , and must use their mags , but they are bullet proof. I used their BM on a B&C stock and it fit great.
You could skip the smithing and find a manners mini chassis stock if that's not too pricey. Mine likes MDT mags.
I would love to change my HS Precision 700 5R 223 over to a detachable box. Do you know of any other options? 400 for the HS seems a little steep. I wonder what one of them new fangled chassis’s cost.
You could just buy bottom metal and get it installed in your existing stock. I believe CDI does the install for free if you buy the bottom metal from them. Edit: There's plenty of other options out there, as well - Badger, Seekins, MPA, 419, etc. as well as a bunch of gunsmiths that can do the work. Most options, even with install, can come out less than the $400 for the proprietary HS bottom metal.

Jetsurgeon Check out the KRG Bravo chassis. Very nice and would cost less than the $400 for the bottom metal.

There's multiple options out there for quality bottom metal that costs way less than $400.
I was referencing jetsurgeonand fixed my post. Yes I agree with your CDI for bottom metal as they did great work for me.
Fair enough. I also edited my earlier post to clarify that there are more options than CDI for something cheaper than HS and without using proprietary mags.
I would still get a bravo. 350, sell the hs for 100 bucks makes it a net of 250. PTG bottom metal and install at the cheapest is probably about that unless he can do a nice job of it himself and only be out 120 for the bottom metal.
Id still rather have the bravo over an hs with any bottom metal though.
Based on earlier comments, $210 for CDI bottom metal plus shipping would put him about even with the Bravo and selling his HS. Of course, that's assuming he likes the Bravo in the first place.
Wow guys! Thanks for the info looks like a few different choices. But man changing the HS stock over is going to cost some coin. I do like the KRG Bravo chassis you guys mentioned, not bad for 350.00, but I’d still have to get the magazines on top of that. Going the other routes mentioned is going to be about the same in price in the end, still would have to purchase the mags on top of the bottom metal, and inletting, plus shipping, etc.
There’s got to be a better way.... LOL. Why can’t someone make a darn stock with would take 5.56 PMAGs? LOL
I just might keep the HS Precision stock and use the damn bdl magazine that came with the rifle, that would be the cheapest.

There actually is bottom metal to feed from 223 AR mags, but you have to modify the action, and apparently PMAGs don't work. AICS mags will give you FAR more space for loading long OAL with 77+gr ammo, but the AR mag well setup can potentially give you a lower profile mag with greater capacity.
Thanks for the info Hollywood... I was looking around the PTG website at the bottom metal options, man they have quite a few different ways to go. Now that you mentioned it, yea I would need to be able to load long, currently using 69 SMK's in the 1-9 twist tube. So an ACIS mag setup would be the way to go?

I'd be surprised if you needed to load 69gr so long as to really need the AICS, but it wouldn't hurt, especially if you think you'll rebarrel down the road to something that will let you run 77+. I run 80s in my 223 out to 1200 yards, and the AICS mags are the only way to make that work for mag fed.
I thought I liked my hs until I got an XLR envy heavy and realized how far behind the times my gear was. Skip the bottom medal and upgrade to a better stock like a manners or get a chassis. My XLR was money well spent.
