I'm thinking of buying one of these for a light recoiling range practice rifle, but my recent bad luck with my aac-sd 308 has me a little leary of a factory Remington. A little better than 2 moa is the best I can get inside mag length. I hoping I just got a dud. What kind of accuracy can I expect out of a tac 223?

My 700 tactical / .223 had the Hogue stock on it which would be just "OK" for a hunting stock but the forearm makes contact with the barrel once on a bipod or bag. I promptly removed the canoe paddle stock and put it in a Bell & Carlson stock & bedded it with Devcon so at least the foundation is solid. I also got the stock trigger adjusted down to a crisp 4 lbs which I am OK with. The other mods I did was new PTG detachable magazine bottom metal , bolt knob and threaded the muzzle for my AAC M4-2000 suppressor.

1st range trip with some crappy reloads netted about 1/2" @ 100 yards. The twist is slow if you want to use uber heavy bullets. I am sure I can get better groups with some load work up.

Once you get a stock w good bedding, bolt tightened lugs lapped which is cheap and easy, the rest is on you. See my thread challenge me w your 223, mine had all the problems even a crooked chamber! Consistent .550 average and that's 5 shot groups even on a bad day!

Once I replaced the stocks with B&C's and skim bedded them, replaced the trigger in two and a spring in the third (rather than a new trigger) my 223 tac, 308 tac and 308 AAC all shoot well. Well being in the .5-.6 range. I have found the 1:9 twist in the 223 to really like 69 and 77 BTHP's, going to bullets longer than 1 inch can get tricky... if you search my "posts started" you will find one where I took the 223 tactical to 1000y with 75g berger vlds.

If you still have your AAC dont try to reach the lands... 168-175 BTHP, 168 a-max and 168 vld I have tried worked well when OAL was between 2.810-2.835 using varget, AR-comp and H4895. Watch your concentricity and I would not recommend going lighter than 155 and even that has been a little more finicky for me in the 1:10 twist AAC barrel compared to the 1:12 in my tactical.

My SPS Tactical in .223 has been good for just over 1/2 MOA. I just posted a link to it in the .223 challenge thread that you will find a little lower in this page. IMO it is a near perfect trainer/introductory rifle to get non-shooters interested in shooting at slightly longer ranges.

By the way, I load mine with 69gr SMKs or 68gr Hornadys loaded to 2.280 COL and they shoot great while still fitting in the mag. Maybe I just got lucky.

My .223 AAC 16.5" is a solid MOA or less gun. And that is shooting 60gr Nosler's loaded on a 1050 Dillon with some cheap bulk brass. With 69 smk's it will bughole. This gun is suppressed 100% of the time. and still has the Tupperware stock. I have not tried it past 300yds.
YMMV-Rob

I'm going to give it a go. A stock and trigger are an instant upgrade for all my Remingtons. This rifle will probably never see anything past 300, so 69 smk should be fine for paper punching. Niles, when I went to the lands on my aac-sd, the rounds where .180" past mag length and barely in the neck. I replaced the stock with an HS precision and timney trigger and it was still a solid 2 moa.

I have one of the 16.5" ones in a chassis. I shot my initial load development in poor conditions last weekend, 69smks in mixed LC brass w/ varget, and pretty much every group with in a .6 grain window was shooting 1/2 MOA. I still want to try the 77smks but with the short barrel and slower twist, I need to research/experiment with performance at range.
