Remington 770 questions ((please don’t hate))

Ok I know the Remington 770 is notoriously hated but it’s what I have. It’s chambered in 30-06. I was wondering what kind of “upgrades” can be done to help it out. I have a bipod from fin feather fur on it and a cheap CV Life 6-24x50 scope on it. Thanks in advance I appreciate it

Instead of wasting money on that rifle, appreciate it for what it is, a bargain bin hunting rifle and save the money you'd spend on it until you have enough to purchase a different rifle.

The first bolt gun I ever bought was a Remington 710 which is the predecessor and basically the same POS so I've been in the boat. I didn't bother trying to upgrade it because I knew it wasn't worth it based on the absence of aftermarket parts.

If you have money to put into upgrades, dont. Either sell this rifle and add it to your “upgrade” stash or enjoy it as it is.

I agree with the others. It's a real budget rifle, and spending more money on it won't help it much. The money spent on upgrades for it would cost about the same as simply buying a better rifle for the job. That and there's not many upgrades to add for the 770. I would either keep it as-is, use it as a hunting rifle that you dont mind getting banged up, or sell it in favor of a more versatile platform.
Theres nothing wrong with keeping it as is. But for budget long range builds, the cheapest base rifle that has aftermarket availability I would consider would be the Ruger American. Otherwise, Tikka.

My favorite budget scope is the Primary Arms FFP 4-14 scope which can be had for around $230 new (if you get the mil dot reticle). Many others on here will say the Athlon Argos is better but Ive owned both and preffered the Primary Arms hands down. The Argos looked a little milky to me. The Primary Arms was much clearer. Maybe I got a bad Athlon idk.

For the Primary Arms, you can get standard mildot reticles or the R-Grid reticle they have which is real nice. Turret tracking on the Primary Arms is okay, not battle proven stuff but gets the job done for less than $300.
If you can spend more on a scope, then the next step up would probably be the Nikon Black FX1000 series at around the $700-800 range. Then the Athon Ares, Burris XTR II (my current scope), and the Vortex PST Gen 1/2 for around $850-$1100.

I too had a 770, owned it for about a week, traded it in on a savage 110. Even though savage is hated on here I use it for hunting and works fine. Way better rifle IMO.
Budget scopes you could look into athlon or sig, pick your model to fit price.

There is budget guns worth spending money on. The 770 isn't one of them. Find an innocent yokel that needs teaching and help him with that by selling it to him. Scope is only good for party tricks. Sorry but that's the way it is.

One the other hand the 783 is very accurate and with a good scope will embarrass a lot of high end guns.

Forgive me if I missed it, but what is it you want to do with the rifle? Hunt, shoot at distance, plink, target, something else...? How is it behaving now? Does it zero? Reliability problems? Accuracy problems that are the weapon's fault? Is it bedded, floated?

I'm not familiar with the 770, although I can gather a lot from the comments. Still, I can't imagine that it's worse than throwing rocks or going Robin Hood, is it?

Having seen some seriously sub-optimal equipment accomplishing amazing feats out here (that they have no right to do) for people determined to make them work, I've become a big believer in trying anyway. Someone who has been able to make one of those shoot well will probably be able to shoot anything well.

Someday when you get your hands on an AI, it'll be gravy lol

It is all factory out of the box other than putting on the bigger(although cheap) scope and a bipod. Let me see if I can get some factory specs.

Swfa ss scope would be good. Would help with understanding of optics , and could be put on any rifle in the future . I would then Make sure stock is not touching barrel . A little sanding could fix . Then just shoot the hell out of it. This will make you really appreciate a nicer rifle that comes you’re way in the future .

In all honesty, if you and the gun are capable of 1 inch groups at 100 yards, and all you plan to do is stretch it out to maybe 600 yards at most, that setup might just be fine for informal plinking fun. I would suggest at least get a better scope though. A decent scope is the only way to hit long range targets with any consistency.
Someone mentioned the SWFA fixed power scopes, thats a good idea. A 10x would do nicely. Good glass, good reliable internals. And if you want adjustable magnification (albeit at the cost of a track record for reliability) the Primary Arms 4-14 FFP!

At about 59 yards it is all on target on a (I think) NRA B2. It’ll not exactly a pro so there could be quite a bit of shooter mechanical error and I haven’t checked my groups as as of right now I have to drive an hour to shoot. My 22 I shoot to about 75-100 yards

Find a local long range club or match, seek them out through any local gun shops or any other means you have available and go spectate and Make friends. Read the threads on here on beginner rifle and optic combos, they’re some very good budget setups to be had now days, I’m sorry to be brutally honest but the 770 just isn’t one of them. You could be like I was and sometimes still am and try and go against the grain and advice of everyone you’ve ever asked about it and stick a bunch of money into it to make a decent setup but at the end of the day it’s still a 770. Just research and ask questions, when you’re holding your thought out and well planned precision rig you ll be happy, it ll be a much more enjoyable journey, with a lot less frustration and wasted money. Stick with it, you’ve come to the right place.

Op just shoot your rifle and enjoy it. It will shoot fine. I hit man size targets with my ak74 at 500yards open sights or red dot. I can hit 2/3 size targets at 400 yards all day long with a red dot or open sights with my ak as well. Im just holding over. You should be able to have fun with what you have. I know it shoots better than an ak.

Please don't take offense, but it doesn't sound like the equipment is holding you back at this point.

I agree w wade2big. You need to get out there and shoot it. IMHE it's easy to get bogged down in the fallacy that looking at stuff and buying gear somehow suffices for experience in the field. Too many cases where folks with huge $ stuff can't use it, while people who can make cheap stuff work are the quiet masters.

You want to improve your rifle's performance? Get out there and shoot it.

I have the older, even cheaper version of the 770, a 710, in a .270. I upgraded the scope to a bushnell 3200 10x and shoot only factory ammo through it. It has maybe 200 rounds on it since my dad gave it to me in 2008, almost all on animals. It's a really rough and cheaply built rifle but it shoots fine and mine actually feeds and extracts really reliably. My opinion? Upgrade the optics, get a sling, and have fun.
