Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

Matt,

Just started load development for mine, still got a way to go. Currently working with 250 & 300 SMK, 250 Lapua Lock Base and 225 SST's. Running RL 19, 22 & 25 powders with Federal 215 primers. Brass is Lapua and Norma. Long way to go still but taking my time. Paying more attention to the chrono data vs group size at the moment. Will start working groups here in the near future. Trying to duplicate the data on the factory 250 Scenar ammo, running 2840fps and came in at .461" for a 5 shot string outta my rig.

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

Sniper and Dawg,

Thanks for the info and you both have a PM from me... We will all work together and see if we can come up with a perfected round.

ANYONE else out there with a FACTORY MLR REMINGTON .338LM ??? Let us know your home recipe for it and give us the details and accuracy your getting out of if..

Thanks
Matt.

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

My buddy has a one, as do I.

He gets 0.7 MOA from 94grs N570 behind a 250 Scenar, at 92.8mm

I'm gonna shoot mine tomorrow and see what loads it likes best.

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

I have been trying loads with Lapua brass, Federal 215 primers, Sierra 300 grain matchkings, and Hodgdon Retumbo. I get bad pressure signs at 93.0 grains seated to 3.650" @ 2771fps sticky bolt flattened primers. Although my friend has the same rifle his loads are 94.0 grains at 3.600" @2642fps no pressure signs I think either I have hot powder, or he has cold powder, because I get no pressure signs with his reloads. I tried 90.0 grains of my powder at 3.600 @2669fps with slight pressure signs. I need to look at this better, when I have more time. Hopefully this week.

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

Hans, from what you said, one thing sticks out in my mind...

YOUR loads...3.650"
HIS loads...3.600"

Taking into account everything you said in your post, you are jamming the lands and spiking pressure.

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

Yes I know, thats what led me to try this, I tried 90.0 grains of my powder at 3.600 @3669fps with slight pressure signs. I need to look at this better, when I have more time. Hopefully this week.

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

I agree with WALDO..

This is DEFINATELY one round I would NOT want to over pressure...

Starting lower might be better.... I have learned from .308 loading that sometimes... pushing it faster does NOT mean better accuracy...

Keep the loads coming... They are all looking VERY good.

If you get some MEASUREMENTS post them up... We would ALL like to see how they are grouping.

Matt.

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

92grs N570 behind a 250 Scenar gave me exactly 1 MOA.
Not that impressed, and I have put the project on hold until my custom muzzlebreak is fixed. Now, it starts to screw of after two rounds. Greeeat.

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

Shot some 5 round groups again today @ 100 yds.
300smk 3.600 90.0 retumbo 2605 fps av. .4"

300smk 3.600 91.0 retumbo 2642 fps av. .5"

No pressure signs on either load. Ran out of daylight. I have 10 more loaded up to try tomorrow. Looking good.

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

I use SMK 250 and 300gr, Hornady brass, Federal 215 primers and Retumbo powder. I tried several other powders but with the short barrel on this rifle the Retumbo built better velocity. My goal was to shoot a mile with this rifle, and I worked up a real good 250gr load; .300" three shots with 98gr of Retumbo; 3.680" MOL and no signs of over pressure. Problem is, the load goes subsonic at around 1600 yards.
That sent me back to the drawing board with 300gr's. I tried 94gr of Retumbo; got good accuracy but also got signifigant pressure signs (ejector marks on the case base) and heavy bolt lift. I backed the powder off to 93.5gr, which cleared up the ejector marks. Bolt may still be a bit heavier than I would like. I am pushing this load/rifle to the limit because of the mile goal; I would suggest backing it off a bit if absolute accuracy is the goal. At my location, the load crono's at 2725 10 feet from the muzzle and stays supersonic to just beyond 1800 yards.
FYI...I have shot this rifle/load at 1 mile with fantastic results! I have a USO ST-10 with a MOA retical mounted on the rifle. The scope has 60 MOA of hold-over and works really good. My data calls for 65.7 MOA at the mile (zero'd at 300) and on the day I shot it the data was exact.

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

Wow! Thats a bit sobering! lol. My load is back of what the reloading manual calls a max load and I'm not seeing the ejector marks, but better to lean on the side of cauiton. Thanks!

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

Hey I got one of these and just got it back from remington fixing it. I shot lapua 300 gr and hsm 300 gr ammo and at 200 yards the groups 2". This isn't good have anybody used 300 grain bergers and if so could you let me in on some loads to try.

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

I just bought it 3 months ago. They re finished the bore and chamber and put a new trigger in it. It shoots better now than before but with 2" at 200 yrds I am to say the least unhappy. I'm used to shooting 3/4" with my 308. I even have an old model 70 7 mag that I shoot 1 1/4" groups with and it was half the price. I am just wondering if the 300 grain bullets are too much for it to stablize. However, remington shot it at 100 they clam with 300 grain bullets and the 5 shot group was 3/4", but the target they gave me was computer generated so I don' know if it really got shot.

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

Sounds like to me you just got a bad one; maybe a barrel stress problem....I would gunshow that bad boy and get me another one. It should easily shoot 3/4" with the 300 grainers; it is a 1-10 twist rifle so that shouldn"t be a problem.

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

Fresh data!

Powder: N570
COL: 92.8mm
Bullet: 250 Scenar
Case: Lapua

92grs
2666
2635
2677

93grs
2732
2721
2699

94grs
2789
2760
2789

96grs
2795
2721
2818

93grs was the best load and shot 0.55 MOA
All the rest were roughly equal at 0.8 MOA

I'm happy!

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

Matt,

I've had one of these since Sept'10. So far I've tried IMR7828SSC, Retumbo, H1000, H4831SC, and RL22. I've only loaded 250SMK's. So far the best performing powder has been H4831SC (86grains). I also have had to load them long @ 3.715" because the throat is so long.

Today I'm going back out to the range to refine my RL22 loads. It's right around .5" using 86.4 grains.

Next up I'm trying RL19 because I think these powder might be too slow.

Re: Remington MLR .338 LAPUA - SPEAK OUT!

Anyone shooting the 300gr Scenar and VV N570? I've started with the load and the best so far was a tad over MOA at 100 yards. I'm not reading too much into the group sizes at 100 (bi-pod off concrete with rear bag) as I want to try out the best load at 300 and 500 yards.
Recipe so far:

Lapua brass
CCI 250
300gr Scenar
93gr N570
COAL 3.681" (to fit mag)

Sounds like a lot of MLR owners are having good success with the 250 scenars.
