With all the little comments I have heard here and there about how Remington is falling on the QC aspects I wanted to take a few opinions of current experiences..

Is Remington still GTG out of the box or would you guys put your money in another place for an out of the box shooter?

side info: question is coming up while looking at 223 models for an out of the box trainer to shoot as is.

Of the seven Remington’s I own the last two (purchased this year) both had QC issues that should have been caught, both were from the new "Long Range" line. The others were fine... If you’re looking at a 223 get one with a varmint barrel and not a sporter. I have yet to see a varmint contour shift it's POI as it heats up once the barrel is floated in a proper stock and that brings up another point. The plastic stocks need to be replaced and the hogue over molded stocks should be replaced before the barreled action can be counted on for top accuracy. The triggers are poor to ok but can be made a lot better by replacing a spring from erniethegunsmith for less than 10 dollars.

The only other brands/models I have experience with is a Winchester Stealth and a couple FN SPR's, those were/are good to go. Now that I have a McMillan stock on the Stealth it IS my favorite semi factory rifle and holds its own to the customs I own built on Remington or Remington pattern actions with me pressing the trigger.

My 700 aac-sd was a complete dud even after a trigger, stock and bedding upgrade. It would only do 2 moa inside mag length and about 1.25 way out to the lands. After wasting enough money on bullets and powder to buy a barrel, I gave up had it re barreled and blue printed. I really want to buy a sps tactical in 223, but not sure if I want to gamble on another POS.

Both my brother and brother in law have 223 SPS Tactical's and both are excellent shots. Both rifles struggle to consistently keep 5 shot 100 yard groups under 1 moa. Both still have the Houge over mold stocks on them. Tried to convince them to upgrade their stocks but my advise has fallen on deaf ears. :>(

The Remington 700 is fast becoming to rifles what the 1911 is to combat/service pistols...

...as a fundamental basis for a several thousand dollar custom job, it could be accurate and reliable. Just know what you're doing/asking for, and be prepared to wait several months and spend a lot of money.

...I wouldn't trust my life with a stock, factory gun at this point in time

I could go on an on about the parallels, but I'm all out of love for Remington.

All my Rem 700s have been restocked, 3 with B&C Medalists and my 5R in an AICS AX chassis. All have free-floated barrels, 2 (an XCR II and a SPS-Varmint in .308) have been glass-bedded. All are sub-MOA shooters with the SPS-Vs consistently between 1/2 MOA - 3/4 MOA for 5 shots with carefully developed loads and <3/4 MOA with FGGM ammo.

Now Rem has all of these on recall for trigger inspection, but I'm going to replace all the triggers with Timney 510s. They are fine rifles and, though they are less well finished than my Win M70s and Ruger No. 1, they are as good or better shooters. With a new stock, free floating and trigger they are great rifles at their price point.

Just took out my 700P in .223 yesterday. I only put about twenty rounds of factory Rem stuff through it, but it looks promising. I had my smith look it over pretty good before I picked it up, and he said that it looked good. I also had him adjust the 40X trigger that comes in it. Price tag of $1060.00 sucked, but I will be shooting it all season, at least, before I can start to build it. I wanted something solid, stock, trigger, etc. to make me happy for the season or so. The wrong rifle to start a build with, but good to shoot as is for now. And yes I was nervous about Remington's QC issues.

I have heard that Remington's LE dept. has better QC than the civilian side. Curious to see how it works out for you.
