After reading all the negative comments regarding resizing 308 much less mil brass, I ordered up a few hundred Hornady cases to play with. Using Hornady standard dies as well. I decided to try to resize some of the thousands of LC brass I have laying around.

I lubed with my standard lube, One Shot. I let it dry for 5 minutes and stuck the LC brass in the die and resized it. It took 5 strokes to get the shoulder all the way down but it was quite easy. The resized brass looks just like factory except its way too long, but thats an easy fix.

Just thought I'd throw this out there in case anybody else was sitting on a bunch of 308 and had a 6.5 to play with.

Interesting seeing as the .308 isn't the parent cartridge for the 6.5 Creedmoor. Let us know how it works in the rifle.

Re: Resized LC 308 to 6.5 CM

Excuse my ignorance but what is the parent cartridge? I don't have my barrel yet but demensionally the two cases, factory CM and the LC resize, the LC shows no signs of the dreaded doughnut.

Re: Resized LC 308 to 6.5 CM

A year or two back, someone posted regarding a broken press. He was using One-Shot to re-size (not re-form) 308 LC brass. He broke the steel handle on a Hornady press. He returned it to Midway and got a Rockchucker Supreme. He broke the lower platform (fulcrum) on that one. He returned the RCBS for a Redding Big Boss. I think someone at Midway got an inspiration from all of this; they sent him a tin of Imperial sizing wax. He commented on how much easier the job became.

Re: Resized LC 308 to 6.5 CM

The parent case is the .30 TC.

As for One Shot it works just fine in normal sizing operations but if you are forming I would use something like Imperial. I have been using One Shot for a few years now without one problem or stuck case.

Re: Resized LC 308 to 6.5 CM

Funny thing is when I resize LC brass in the Hornady die it tends to push the sholder out to the diameter of to 6.5CM brass. ( the 6.5CM is not tapered as much as the 308) Then all you have to do is trim to lenght. The brass does look good. But the Hornady brass seems plenty strong. Also, I have 2 boxed of new brass that seem harder than the old brass. Anybody else had this experiance with the Hornady brass?

If you are going to be resizing 308 to 6.5 creed,it wouldn't be a bad idea to do some inside neck reaming since the brass thickness that was part of the shoulder is now in the neck.

That's an oxymoron! 5 times isn't that easy!
How thick are the necks after sized to length?

Lol, easy as in not alot of force required. I didn't try to force the case into the die. I went in a little further each time, thats all. I will have to check the necks when I get home, but thanks for the tip.

Actually gentlemen, if you look closely at the 300 Savage you will see where the inspiration for the 30TC came from. Look to the 300 Savage

P.S. That being said the 308 forms quite nicely into 6.5 CM.

Re: Resized LC 308 to 6.5 CM

Alright I did my measuring. What I came up with was:

LC 308 resized Factory 6.5 CM
Neck inside Neck inside
.264 .262

Neck outside Neck outside
.2935 .292

Case neck thickness Case neck thickness
.015 0.14

And then the pics, yes I molested a perfectly brand new 6.5 brass just for this.

Obviously the dirty case is the LC resize.

Re: Resized LC 308 to 6.5 CM

I actually just started doing the same thing. I like .243 brass because I don't have a neck reamer - just figured I would force the donut out to the neck (using tapered expander)and just deal with it. I use a shortened 7-08 die (with tapered expander turned down true size)to "pre-bump" the shoulder to match a fired case at the datum line, then push through a CM die with no bushing, then trim, then neck-turn, then through the final CM bushing. I end up turning the necks down to .016-sh, then mic again and they are good to load. I'm using 243 until my neck reamer gets here, then I will use 308 brass too. True, the taper of the case and shoulder (and length) are different, but they all take the same bolt face, and just about anything is possible with the right/lucky combo of dies...for me, at least. If you or anyone needs specific numbers, PM me and I will share everything I got (it got SILLY at times). I started with the 250 savage route, but I didn't want to deal with that much taper - I don't dig on having to jack with small and/or false shoulders, which is necessary sometimes, but I'd rather not dick with it on a gasgun to boot. I am going to shoot tomorrow. - Oh, it's winchester brass.

Yes it does. It has the same bolt face and feeds without issue. Been shooting it through AICS mags for 4 years now.
