I tossed my MTM, hated it. Google has completely taken over the search for a good vise to the same repetitive blogs pointing to an Amazon affiliate link to a Tipon P.O.S. plastic vice. Arghh. I want something better. Needs to hold all sorts of long guns for jobs ranging from cleaning to scope mounting.

5" multi-vise and channeled soft jaws. Doesn't get much better than that.

This what you need. I bought it from Gradous Rifles while I watched him build my rifle. I had to beg him for it! Has had someone else weld it up and source the USA made vise. It has thin plywood covered with leather in the jaws. The most used tool on my bench.

I had put up some pics of the 'cradle' I had built. They were in a few threads in a few of the "old 'Hides" so that's saying something. What I'd made has held everything I've needed it to hold. For well over 20 years. And yes, I too have never been impressed with the 'tipton' or mtm brand 'plastic fantastics'. YMMV.

WOW! in your 3rd pic it looks like the Elk? in on the wall is turning it's head and HOWLING!! in desperation-or anger- at the rust on your vice!

(Very nice setup and bench, btw)

Yea that was a couple years ago and I had just moved my reloading bench from the unairconditioned shop to what is now the man in the house, to my wife’s dismay she finally let me take a bedroom and turn it into my man room. Got most of the rust off so the elk is now smiling!

is that a self made bench or bought ( hoping for self made so i could add how nice it looks )
Thanks for the complement, yes I love woodworking especially with my father, it was a great project to tackle with him. It’s made out of heart pine flooring from an old textile mill.

A guy posted on Facebook a vise made for working on guitars, and was using it for holding a rifle. It had padded jaws, and could be used to clamp on to just about anywhere on the rifle without damaging it.

I think this was it...

I started looking for a vise for my rifle, and then I remembered I also ordered a bipod. So, I figured all I need to do is put a bag under the butt so it tilts slightly barrel down, and I would be good. Am I wrong about this? I just need it for cleaning.

It works fine for cleaning and almost good enough for working on it, assuming it’s in the stock.

I do most of my cleaning with the rifle mounted on a tripod. Height is easy to adjust and I can point the muzzle down a little to keep the action cleaner.
