Because life's not already full and I'm not injured enough I decided to take the kids indoor rock climbing. Hoy shit. This stuff is not easy. I'm 230lbs, and I felt every ounce... the kids went up the walls and around the boulders like they were staircases, me... not so much... any hints on training and progression? I've gone twice now this weekend and can see myself getting into this (after a lot of weight is shed...).

Get a pull up bar from wal-mart or target that hangs in a door frame. They are cheap and can instantly be taken down/put up.

Use that and start doing dead hang pull ups (grip facing away from you). That will work your back and get you used to pulling your body weight.

Get a metolius hang board and set it up over a doorway in your house. Set one up several years ago for my daughter and she would do pull-ups on it. Funny she won a contest sponsored by the Navy doing pull ups at winter X games in Aspen several years ago. They told her to stop at 17 pull-ups since no one was even close. Won a snowboard and a VIP press pass.

I have good strength to weight ratio in the legs and lower back from lifting. Not powerlifting strong, but more than enough for climbing. What's killing me is the grip. I get a massive pump in the forearms and I have to sit it out for it to go away before getting back on the wall. I can top a 5.8 and parts of a 5.9 (I think) as they're marked in the gym but it kills my forearms. I'm not feeling a huge hit in my lats to be honest as I'm trying hard to keep legs bent, arms straight and my hips into the wall as much as possible.
