One word for you. How?

Re: Rotating bolt knob

If you have a cup/sleeve with an insert on bearing, sort of like a flush cup, this could be adapted onto a bolt handle and would allow the bolt to rotate around the bolt handle if needed.

Re: Rotating bolt knob

You could tap the handle stud then slide your bolt handle onto a socket head cap screw. locktite the threads and don't over tighten. I would cover the threads with a brass or delrin sleeve to make it rotate smootly.

Another alternative would be to loosen your grip so the handle slides in your hand. I'm just sayin.

Re: Rotating bolt knob

Instead of cutting threads just turn a smooth cylindrical surface on the bolt handle and then slip fit a knob over that. Drill a hole in the end of the handle that is either:
a)threaded for a bolt and is ie. removable or
b)drill the hole so the wall thickness is on the thin side and then peen/flare the end out so the knob cannot come off.

Re: Rotating bolt knob

Or just get an AI rifle....and tell everybody that the round knob rotates.....I also am missing the benefit of a spinning knob....guarenteed somebody with a M700 factory knob will still be faster at bolt manipulation with practice.

Here is some AI video that I have been wanting to post somewhere!!! Notice the fast bolt movement and the practice involved to catch the spent shell mid air....just takes practice.

Re: Rotating bolt knob

just dont grip so tight.

use what you have like a socket joint, like a hip.

Remington factory works well but your thumb is going to get real familiar with the power adjustment ring of your scope.

I was thinking the same time, why?

Why would you guarentee something when you have never tried it? And why would you think a standard would be so much faster? Just say'n... No flame intended.

It seems like a small addition/option I believe and think other's would seem perfectly logical. Think of it as smoother vs. faster. That was my primary intent.

Would it be any faster slower? If anything fraction's of a second faster and smoother.
Your going to have to give me a good explaination as to why it would be slower than a standard bolt knob, because that goes against my common sense.

Re: Rotating bolt knob

Guys, let's not lose the sight of it (no pun intended

).

If I truly need the speed of semi-auto - I wouldn't use a bolt-action rifle with a 5-round (OK, 10-round) mag.

So far the standard bolt with the standard bolt knob was fast enough for me.

Re: Rotating bolt knob

I can guarentee it because it will happen....you will build one with a bronze bushing, then somebody will build one with a brass bushing, then somebody will build one with silicone impregnated bronze......untill finally all you have to do is think about a fresh shell being in the chamber and it does it.

It is the way of man.....WTF reason does Jerry Michalak (sp) have to shoot 12 rounds with a reload in his ungodly 2.8 seconds....or whatever the record is....there will always be someone taking your idea further...guranteed.

The idea sounds good on paper, but think of a trailer toung jack. Sometimes the lift/lower crank handle has a sleeve so that your hand can grip solidly, while still rotating on the crank handle. And the others have just a solid bar.

For me the solid bar is easier to control because you can twist the handle exactly where you need to torque....if you are having a hard time understanding my logic, go to any RV or trailer dealer and try a few different ones out....you will understand what I am talking about.

Granted my preference on the trailer jack handle are different than my dads....but to each his own. But if you are looking to trim your bolt manipulation time I would buy a dozen metal snap caps and practice. Or look at the Relay shooters in Finland I think?

Can someone help me out with the shooting vids of the "firing with middle finger" technique?

Re: Rotating bolt knob

Another solution for a non-existent problem...

There is no need to go installing rotating bolt knobs and similar devices to achieve the result you are looking for (which I assume is a smoother bolt cycle from your rifle). Train with what you've got and you'll eventually be smooth which equates to FAST!

Re: Rotating bolt knob

If you like gadgets, go for it.

If you like speed and accuracy, get your ass on the ground and dry fire.

I devote at least four to five hours a week dry firing to include rapid bolt manipulation and magazine loading drills.

No need for tricky knobs. Just practice.

Here is a video of the technique I use. This is about half-speed. You can see that in this technique a rotating knob would actually cause a problem. "Grip it and rip it" is not the only way to run a bolt quickly.

Re: Rotating bolt knob

I don't know why speed keeps being brought up... What would the problem be with a rotating bolt knob? Would it not be a little smoother? Of course it would.

Nobody is trying to reinvent the weal here. And it's not going to take a rocket scientist to build one.

I lost track of how many times I said it now, but the primary purpose for this design, IS NOT speed.

Re: Rotating bolt knob

If you think a bearing in the bolt knob is going to make it "smoother" then you need to spend some more time running your rifle.

Even factory actions become smooth with use. My Remington slicked up after a couple months of live and dry fire. My AI smoothed out after a couple of days.

A rolling bolt handle is not going to make the action smoother. ALSO if you need the handle to roll in your palm you are not running the bolt in an efficient manner.

When all else fails if you think you need a gadget, get the gadget. If you need to invent the gadget, invent it. I am sure there are others that will buy it......even if it's superfluous.

Me? I prefer to just train with my system until I get it right. Then continue to train with it until I can't get it wrong even under stress.
