 I got lucky. Very Lucky.

I had been using an OCW load, that I thought I had a good load for. I had a word with another shooter about how a different load may shoot better. Today I was getting ready to load some ammo for the weekend gave that load a try.

It looks like it shoots! (So much for my OCW target interpreatation skills.)

btw, did you load your mag up 5per group, or did you load up the entire mag? or as the dems would call it... clip

Well, first group I reloaded 3 rounds and shot them. When I saw how they were grouping, I went and reloaded two more and shot them. When I saw the first group, I then realized I had to finish out 6 groups. I reloaded 5 rounds and then shot them, then loaded 5 more rounds and shot them, etc... until I had 6 groups. I loaded 5 rounds in the mag for each group and went to town. I did not wait any time for barrel cooldown between shots. The only cooldown was the time it took me to reload the next 5 rounds and then get back into position.

It is great having a spot to shoot right outside the garage door. It makes load testing/development so much easier.

Thought I would share a couple cool pics.

First is my nephew shooting his first rifle & AR platform!! Nothing like shooting your first rifle with a LMT MWS tack driver!!! He is so pumped about going to the range again. We had loads of fun and he was hitting the steel gong @ 300yards no problems. LOL, like my homemade brass catcher!? LOL! It works tho! its a carry on duffle bag that has a steel ring round the opening perimeter so when you open it that it just stays open, stitched a pillow case inside and I put a plastic tray inside of it... and when you're done you just pick it up like a bag and off you go... hahaha, it's kinda red-neck, but it works:

next is the 51 amax beauties I have loaded up for tomorrow if the weather holds out... nothing like a cool picture of some top notch ammo! First time I've used RL-15 powder with amax 168 bullets.. I've always used varget in the past.

thanks bro! I was stoked to see the group through my scope when I made these shots & was itching to get the target back to see just how small the group was. I think I could've had one hell of a day if it wasn't for the d-bag next to me shooting the tannerite targets from hell. I felt like a I was in a f$cking war-zone!! I'm amazed the private 300yard range master didn't drive over from the trap section of the range and smack him up side the head. He must've had the day off or something. It is hard enough trying to get through 30shots let alone doing it with explosions and smoke next to my f@cking target about 30yards away! Don't get me wrong or nothing, the tannerite targets are cool and all, but doing them while other people are trying to target practice is kinda d-bagish.... Oh well, just some real war-zone sniper training I guess. HAHAHA.

Damn Elfster, nice shooting! Well done!

Actually -I think it is a great idea! Keeps the brass off the floor and makes it easy to collect.

Sometimes the simple solutions are the best.

Not as easy as it looks...

As the title says... "not as easy as it looks"

This is my first attempt at any comp like this. 30 shots on paper is a chore. I had this rifle with open sights on it and put a bench rest scope on it for our local Varmint Silhouette matches. It is the most accurate rifle I have in an AR platform. I have managed some good groups out of it, but six in a row is rough. Flyers courtesy of my weak skills..

I see some vertical stringing in some of this, looks like I got development to do for this rifle.

Mostly, I am posting this up to get my buddy back in Texas, Tenzero to man up and get shooting. Game on.

Rock River receivers, Jewel Trigger, 24 inch 1/8 twist Bull.
Nightforce 8x32 Bench Rest scope
77 SMK, 23.5 gn CFE 223, mag length
6,000 feet
70 degrees
5ish 90 degree wind
Bipod, rear bag, on a bench

Wow! Thats some damn good shooting! Not only did you make the boards but you made the sub moa all day long boards also! Nice! It really isnt that easy when it only takes one or two fliers to screw up the whole entry. You will never know until you try it....

I have found that 5.56 will be more accurate than 7.62 hands down in the ar platform up to about 300, maybe 400 yards.... Then the 7.62 will over take it a little after 400yards.... Really depends on the bullet weight. It was the very same deal on the first shootout... The only person left standing with a 7.62 on the first shootout was me and my LMT. You will find that 5.56 and 6.5 and 260'S will clean house in the ar platform... Thats why i like the 5.56 as it is stupid cheap and really accurate if you have a bull barrell IMO. and I rarely shoot over 300yards anyway.

I find it incredible how much the 5.56's dominate this challenge.

one thing is for damn sure about this shoot-out challenge... it can be really fun and rewarding, while drive you completely f#cking crazy & pissed off at the same time.... LOL, I would like to know how many people have tried this shootout and didn't post because they didn't make it, AND how many people said, "MOTHER F#CKER" when they hit their first flier screwing up the entire target.... it only takes one or two bullets to make the difference of if you make the boards or not.....

I have to agree with the real difficulty of getting this done. Last year I bet I tried this 4 or 5 times before i got a set of targets worth posting here.

It taught me a lot about what I and my rifle are capable of. It also taught me that folks can talk all day about what they or their rifle are capable of.

Yeah. I'm one of those guys. Thought I was doing great, but I didn't see the "stray" until I walked up to my target.
One shot increased my average group size almost .2". Sheesh. My Rock River AR doesn't throw shots and I was using FGMM 69 gr.
so I guess I know who screwed up.

I'll try again.

By the way elfster, congrats on that amazing .179 one-hole group. Nice!

That's what I've always heard and my thinking about brass to be shot through a semi-auto is that it required full length resizing.
I just uniformed/resized all my new Hornady 6.5 Grendel brass as well as trimming the the inside flash hole burr so it should be interesting to see the results I get and Heydogman is also shooting a 6.5 caliber.
The only problem I see is it's been quite gusty here lately so I'll have to see how the week plays out.

I wish people would approach this as less of a competition and more as a collection of data points. If you make the leader board or not, the info still has value.

Absolutely!

Im not interested in seeing someones 25th target shot that finally got them at an inch MOA.

What is the equipment capable of when taken from bag to bench.

That is the value of this thread for anyone deciding to buy equipment and get real world expectations.

If you are unhappy with your target post it anyway and than shoot another and post again.

100% and spot on pmclaine!

Well, I just got home from having my appendix taken out. Doing pretty damn good but gosh damn! the last two days was pure pain and suck ass big time. I'm feeling much better and I'll get the boards updated ASAP. It was nice having my ipad in my hospital room to read all of the good info on SH. I have the next couple days off from work which will be a good excuse to stay home, get better, and prep brass.

bluto!! you actually made both boards so if you edit your existing target posting so it matches that of the example entry I can get you on the boards! you just need 3 pictures (1 pic is of rifle). just follow the example entry and you will be golden. good shooting my friend!

totally true!!! spot on ptrlcop...

please peps, post your targets regardless if you make the boards or not! good point!

another reason why post my red dot 1x power rock river arms... I had absolutely no intention of making the boards when I made those shots, but I figured it would be really really good info if someone was thinking about buying a similar 1x red dot set up and what they could expect in comparison to a bench AR with a 16x scope.. it really comes down to intended purposes.... my rock river with the red dot aimpoint pro is my home defense / SHTF rifle and close QTRS use, but it is nice to know what it can do moa wise up to 100yards if needed.

I wish people would approach this as less of a competition and more as a collection of data points. If you make the leader board or not, the info still has value.

thanks my friend... im feeling 10x better and this give me good reason to annoy the shit out of everyone on SH with crazy posts and to do some reloading so I can get back to shooting once better... LOL

btw, no shit man! this is racing! it is guys like you that don't F$CK around.

Nobody wanted to be the first to say it, but heydog hit the nail on the head. awesome work my friend & perfect entry posting! not only did you kick my DPMS 3G1 off the boards for average, but you also kicked scratchthejeepguy off for best single! so kick ass job and awesome looking rifle! very well done.

and thank you! I'm starting to feel much better.... not sure what was worse, having my appendix taken out, the breathing tube shoved down my mouth and rare throat, or the ungodly constipation! LOL, no kidding..... I went 72hours without a bowel movement. Lets just say some prune juice and 2lax pills took care of it. LOL!

Glad you are recovering well elfster.

two combinations.... shooter error (on the 1.9) and dumb luck (on the .584)... LOL, just playing with ya bluto!

yeah, it really sucks when it comes down to only one round screwing up your entire entry! man, have I been there before... just think, if he didn't have that one round flier on that 1.9 group and it was more like 1.0, his average would've been .8745.... bluto would've been in 6th place... it only takes one bullet to screw ya. When you boil it down, it was 3 total bullets that screwed bluto over..... Bluto, you should give it one more run.

This game really is 40% shooter, 40% rifle, and 20% ammo IMO.

Bluto,

You have got a shooter there. It looks like you have two distinctly different sized groups, over and inch, and 1/2" groups. What do you think is causing this?
