**ROUND2 !!**, (100YARD), Semi-Auto, 6group, 30round SHOOTOUT!

Man alive, my little 1-4power vortex pst scope w/capped turrets was on fire today with my 4"red circles (target size works wonders with this scope @ 100yards)... Even though this target produces a .9641 average, it is still not enough to make the top 10 (but was damn close)........ but I will take the single best group of .438" (best group from this rifle / scope combo by far).. BUT HELL, I'm kicking myself off the top ten for best single with my LMT! WTF! LOL.... Oh well.

Shot with DPMS 3G1 at 100yards with harris bipod and rear sand bag
Best single group of .438"

More improvement from the LaRue with better ammo. The jackass behind the rifle really screwed up a what could've been a sub .75 average, but if frogs had wings they could get eagle pussy. So the pursuit continues. Got rained out or I would've redone this. Scored a nice .5 group that'll at least make the board.

A half-ass showing on my part. It was raining the whole time I was shooting all of these groups. The only reason I'm posting this is because I shot my smallest group to date with a gas gun, and I know it'll make the board.

Wow, thats awesome bluto77! Shit man, you were only two bullets away from sub-moa all day long and i would say this is a huge improvement. Nice work and ill update the boards later tonight.

wow, nice work! i'll get you on the boards in a little bit. kick ass rifle

I'm not shy, so I'll post this up here, too. (I'm one of those embarrassingly-honest full-disclosure types)

These were 30 consecutive shots at 100yards. I don't have a LRF, so I had to believe the guy at the range. I shot that this morning at Astro's range outside of Georgetown, tx. I shot on lane 42. This range has berms between every couple of lanes, so the wind was negligible.

I shot my 556 rifle a bit before to get the jitters out, and I shot 5 rounds through the LaRue rifle on another target before starting my submission.

For my entry, I shot a 5-shot group w/ one shot every 15 seconds or so. Just get good and relaxed. I waited and stepped away from the line for about 5-6 minutes between strings. By about the middle of the third string, I was sooo effing nervous!

Well, I'm not going to beat any world records nor beat my own score with this entry I ran over the weekend with my LMT MWS @ 100yards, but I figured I would post it anyway. Shot with some sierra matchking 168's. Think it works out to about .911 average.

I posted this on another thread and I found the #'s to be so interesting that I had to post them on here also:

some even more interesting info.... these #'s are paired up from the 1st and 2nd shootout threads.. notice how these people pair up from the 1st & 2nd rounds!! very interesting!!. This is why I think my 6group, 5shot shootout is a fantastic test to show how far a person can push their own skill with the potential of their own rifle! mix in some reloading and I think this is amazing results with how close these two different threads pair up & are sooooo close. It is not always the rifle when it comes to 100yard shooting. Like I've always said when it comes to 100yard groups, it is 40%shooter, 40%rifle, and 20%ammo... The more you go out in yardage, the more the shooter skill increases with factors like mirage and wind blowing in different directions increasing the shooter% and decreasing the rifle% & where art and science come together in the middle:

Yeah,I got bit by the accuracy bug.Takes three nights to load thirty rounds now.Just started turning necks on a lathe so probably will add another day.Just like racing, you want to do a little better each time.If I don't I'll spend twenty hours thinking about what went wrong.

I just did something today at the range that I thought would never happen with my DPMS 3G1 3gun rifle rig with a 1-4x vortex PST scope..... Sub-MOA all day long!!!

Was using my go to AR-15 load of 60grn vmax, 23.8varget, CCI400 primers, and 2.25 coal. I'm absolutely floored & jacked up right now! This really is everything coming together from having a nice rifle with a JP crisp trigger, good shooting form, using the right size target for the distance being shot at (vortex 1-4 black reticle dot fits inside red circle just perfect at 4x magnification with a nice red band around the black reticle dot), and using some kick ass match grade reloaded ammo. I used a tad bit smaller red circle target than I usually do with this rifle this time around and I think that small change made a big time improvement with today's shots.

Shot with my DPMS 3G1 5.56 @ 100yards with harris bipod front & rear bag on bench.
Average was .8326
Best group was .647
Rifle used = DPMS 3G1 5.56

Two things happened today with my rock river arms elite operator2 with 1x aimpoint pro red dot @ 100yards.... First, this is the first time shooting match grade reloaded ammo (usually just use spray & pray 55grn FMJ plinking ammo) with this set up. Second, this is the best I've ever done with this rifle at 100yards hands down and it is the result by doing the following.

1.) using match grade reloaded ammo made the biggest difference obviously

2.) setting my aimpoint pro at the lowest visible setting and using my rear iron sight only (did not use front iron sight) on the small aperture co-witness produces an insanely clear & round red dot aiming circle.... by doing this, I was able to fit the perfectly clear & round red-dot aiming dot perfectly inside the black circle even @ 100yards with only 1x power. The red dot vs black circle contrast works amazing.... Trick is to use the rear iron sight small aperture to somewhat magnify & clear up the red dot aim point set at the lowest possible visible setting.

This will not make the boards, but this is pretty damn good if you ask me for a 1x red-dot @ 100yards with no magnification at all. Works out to a "shooters IPHY" 1.2745moa, with the best group at .832" sub-moa!!!

Red-dot was adjusted down after the first group due to the higher velocity ammo.

I'm telling ya, this cheap $3.50 multiple size circle stencil works wonders for producing cheap targets with fantastic results depending on the magnification power being used & type of reticle used & what yardage you're shooting at! You just increase or decrease the circle size dependent upon the magnification being used, yardage you're shooting at, and the type of reticle being used. It has 1/2" increment circles from 1" to 4". Aim small, miss small. Works great.

Got the circle stencil @ Jo-Ann fabrics for $3.50 on sale

YOU'RE ON THE BOARDS! the competition is getting really hard to beat and you really got to have your shit together just to get into the top ten. Nice friggen job bro! too bad about the 29th shot flier, grrrrrr! Man, have I've been there before and I totally understand how much that can piss a person off. One f$cking bullet away from sub-moa all day long and one hell of an average. I think it is safe to say you have one heck of a shooter on your hands and you just need to get rolling with your reloading and you'll have some ultra sick groups.

Please edit your existing entry with your rifle pic and other general information as in the example OP entry. Kick ass job man!

Here's another target with my LaRue OBR 5.56. This one should make the top 10, but just barely. I was going to shoot prone today, but I just couldn't get into a good position. I'll have to learn more about it. This was shot from the bench with bipod and rear bag. I've also changed out the scope and put a Bushnell ERS.

Nothing like kicking myself off the list for both average and single best with my DPMS 3G1. Oh well, it was worth the effort with a 4x power scope.

Looks like my new rock river arms ATH is a winner winner chicken dinner! Totally amazed with this rifle so far. Didn't even need to touch my turrets transplanting the vortex scope from my LMT to my new rock river arms ATH rifle. Was close enough to the bulls for groups which makes me really happy. Group average would've been totally sick if it wasn't for the first bad group but you can't win them all. Would've been sub-moa all day long if it wasn't for the funky 1.291 group and it had me a little worried at first. For some reason two of my groups are a bit high and I'm wondering if I was positioned behind the scope a little strange maybe? I don't think it was the reloads. hmmmm, not sure. Anyway, I'm totally happy with the results especially for the first rounds down the tube. Works out to .7285 IPHY moa @ 100yards & .391" best group. Break in the barrel a little bit more with some load development for this rifle and she should be really kicking ass soon.

I rocked this out today with my 1x AIMPOINT PRO RED DOT & RRA ELITE OPERATOR2 @ 100yards. This is not going to win any awards, but if I must say so myself it's not too darn bad for no magnification at 100yards.. Two groups sub-moa. Once I was done with my 30shots and I came to the conclusion I wasn't winning any awards LOL ;), then i shot a 20shot group @ 100yards.

Just an FYI..... what I like to do with this rifle set up for small groups is to co-witness the rear iron sight (do not use front iron sight) only with the small aperture on the rear iron sight & the red dot on the lowest visible setting..... this produces a very very crips, clear, and perfectly round red dot! don't believe me? try it for yourself!

If you are looking to get a red dot set up, then this should give you a really solid idea of what to expect with such a set up @ 100yards and 55grn FMJ ammo out of a 1:9twist barrel.

here is my entry for my new RRA ATH rifle:

First and foremost, I can't even believe I'm about to share this info as I honestly thought long and hard about keeping this ace up my sleeve with the shootout forums & other BS from misc dick heads here and there.... I should just keep this info to myself but WTF! Especially for those that give me so much crap, so you can take my OCD and shove it up your A$$!!! LOL JK!! (LOL, I know most of you are just joking & it is funny)... I just wouldn't be myself unless I was to share good info with good people = YOU GUYS!!!... This $hit cost me money to test this stuff out & to share this info with you.... $50 for the new front sand bag, $30 for 101rounds of reloaded ammo, $5 in gas, and obviously my time. I'm obviously having fun doing all of this stuff anyway... All shot with my new rock river arm ATH rifle with an 18" SS heavy 1:8twist barrel @ 100yards.

Anyway, I got a killer deal on some 250ct boxes of 55VMAX bullets for $42 bucks & I have never used them before. My typical go to round for my AR-15's is the 60VMAX so I figured I would run my M.E.O.C.W. GAUNTLET TEST developed for the shootout threads to see what works best with this new 55grn VMAX bullet I've never used before while developing 3 total entries. If I get such results with a 55grn bullet out of a 1:8twist, then just imagine what I'll get once I run my 60grn VMAX PET LOAD, or 68 / 75grn BTHP with this new front BAG..... Anyway...... I've been doing tons of research using an alternative to a bipod..... Bipod jump was driving me nuts and after much research I decided to order in this mega-benchbag... WOW! I'm SOOOOOO glad I did!! 100rounds, 20 total 5-shot groups, with different varget drop rates during a F#CKING test of all things, ALL SUB-MOA ALL DAY LONG! EVERY SINGLE BULLET! So for all of those that say I have OCD, then you can take my OCD and shove it up your A$$$ !!! (LOL, totally kidding)....

This is how I took my shots today with about 3mph wind & 87ish degree weather. New mega bag in the front, and canvas type owl ear bag in the rear. I actually had to use a jacket out of my trunk to elevate the front bag about 1"... NOTE that with SOPMOD type stocks I run ears front to back & with A2 type stocks I run the ears left to right. As for the new front bag, I obviously took the bipod off & used the synthetic side of the bag & not the leather side of the bag. The dead still accuracy out of this set up IS JUST F#CKING STUPID CRAZY!!:

S.O.B! LOL! I just realized there was a mistake on my target! One of the groups is actually not sub-moa as I thought one of the bullet holes was a decimal point!! oh well... Still 19 out of 20 groups is still not too bad for being all shot in a row. At least I found the mistake just to be fair to others on the shootout thread. Still, this front bag is amazing and I'm stoked to try it out with my other rifles & their pet loads.

Elfster,

What kind of scope is that? Looks like a Vortex? By the way, do you have any info on the Atlas Bipods? Im considering it for the LMT I just purchased.

atlas is the best money can buy if you can afford it..... if you can afford it, then I would hook up with one... Personally, ive never owned one, but I've shot friend's rifles with atlas bipods and they are awesome. As for me, I use my 6-9 swivel harris bipod all of the time. Name of the game is the lower you can get your rifle to the ground = the more accurate. You might need to bump the legs out a notch or two with the harris 6-9 depending on the surface you're shooting off of or the length of your magazine. Just another reason why I like 20round magazines so much for my AR-15's is due to this very reason. I also own a 9-13" harris for shits and giggles and for out in the grass / field work.

as for the scope, it's a vortex PST viper 4-16x50 FFP with a larue quick detach LT158 mount with a 10moa cant. All of my scopes are vortex as they have the best warranty in the biz and the re-sale value is a reflection of this very point.

Even though this is the best I've ever done with this rifle at 100yards, I guess I can't expect much from a spray and pray bullet with a cannelure with mixed headstamped brass. Also, I'm done buying benchmark powder. Even though benchmark meters awesome, I've never had good luck with benchmark like I do with varget. I wanted to use up this ammo so I could use the brass for better purposes. I figured before I moved my scope back over to my LMT I'd give it a shot on my $995 dollar rock river arms elite operator2. Still, not too bad for a bullet that has a cannelure with benchmark powder but one of these days I'll need to give some 55grn or 60grn vmax's a shot with this rifle & scope combo to see how she really performs. The scope was pretty much nuts on again and only needed to be adjusted about 1/2moa down and 1/4moa left during the transplant from my RRA ATH. Hard to beat the larue LT158 mount. LOL, I had to take off the rear iron sight and the sun-shade as it was hitting the front iron sight. The gas block on this rifle is too damn busy! At least it meets RRA's 1moa accuracy guaranty even with crappy bullets. One thing is for damn sure, the chrome-moly barrel on this rifle does NOT like to shoot hot at all.

Shot with my Rock River Arms elite operator2 @ 100yards with bag front & rear bag on bench.

Got a hold of some 6.5 100 grain Berger match bullets which are discontinued.Worked up charges from 41 to 42.6 of !MR 4007.If I had stopped at 42.3 would of been a great average..110 away from the lands and wind changing from west, south and back to west I didn't expect much.
The little bullet shot great and recoil was so light the rifle tracked perfect in the bags, until the last group.
The .180 group can go a couple thous each way but this is the best average.

Now that's some fantastic shooting! Nice job and thank you for posting your results. You can never go wrong with a rock river IMO. Sooooo close to the top ten also & right on the heels of bluto77. Keep up the good work and give it another shot. Looking good so far.

How do you like your rock river arms BTW? awesome for the money are they not? Big RRA fan here. Looks like you were only 3 bullet holes away from sub-moa all day long also. Very nice.

I had three objectives today.

First, was to test the new PEN mod for the chargemaster: http://www.snipershide.com/shooting...chargemaster-optional-pen-straw-mod-pics.html

Second, was to keep the "sandbag" at home & to bust out the 6-9" harris bipod to practice my "fundamentals" as I was obviously getting too lazy using a "sandbag" too much ;) JK!

and Third, just to have fun with one of my favorite pet loads.

2nd time running my LMT sub-moa all day long. Looks like it was a success!

Great shooting Elfster. I'm gonna get my Gap-10 .308 out and do this hopefully Sunday. Still real hot here in Arizona, but tired of not being in the competition. Need to find a place to shoot were hunting rifles aren't going off all around me.

Its been damn near 90 to 100 for the last 3weeks even here in wi during the middle of the day. Main reason why i hit the range at 430pm is to get around the mirage as much as possible,,, especially when shooting 300 yards or more.

I ran this over the weekend with a harris bipod and rear sandbag. I would say this is very average and typical for my LMT. Not the best, but not the worst either. Very typical shooting out of my LMT MWS with 168 SMK's............ Hornady 168 amax would push these groups over sub-moa all day long or very close to it as in my previous posting. If you're getting groups like this or maybe just under 1.3ish, then this is very typical. I would rejoice if you get any groups sub-moa as a AR-10 owner regardless of manufacture. Everything really does hinge on the ammo that you use and shooter skills. I can't beat this drum enough, don't move your head away from cheek weld / scope view during your group shots. This will not beat my existing entry, but I figured I would still post it to give those with LMT's or soon to be LMT owners what to expect (as previously stated this is actually really typical) so you're not wondering if it is just you or the rifle.

group average = .9813" (.937moa) scope was adjusted down / right a tad after the lower left .531 group FYI

that is a good question! hmmmmm

ill make the rule right now... in my opinion, the barrel is the most important aspect of any rifle. it is always the first thing I look at when making a rifle purchase in terms of quality and specs & is the heart of any good rifle system. A rifle with a 260 or 308 is two different animals. A rifle with a 14" or 24" length is two different animals. twist rate, light vs heavy vs bull, blah blah blah.

I would say it is a different rifle and can be on the board more than once being that the catridge is listed with the rifle on the top ten...... just as long as one of the following aspects changes:
- obviously different caliber
- twist rate
- length of barrel
- light vs heavy vs bull

Elfster,
If you re-barrel a rifle that's on the board to a different caliber is it considered the same rifle?
