At the range and having a hell of a time with my 3-20 Ultra Short. I’m trying to set the elevation zero stop but can’t get it to work. I’m zeroed at 12 mils up. I lock the turret, and loosen the two 2mm Allen head screws. I’ve tried barely loosening them, and have had them as far out as I can while still being able to unlock the turret. I then turn the turret back to zero, lock it, and tighten the two screws. Each time the round hits 12 mils low. What am I doing wrong here?

Hey dude,

Saw this, didn't want to see you left hanging too long.

You are following the correct procedure: get your zero, lock turret, loosen the two Allen screws, unlock turret and spin/dial back to "0", (I like to keep pulling up on it slightly when I dial back down to "0"), lock turret, tighten screws. I'm sure you double checked the manual and all that given that you did it correctly.

If that isn't working then it would seem the loosening of the screws isn't disengaging the turret (or however you want to phrase that), so I would call Jerry at the S&B service center tomorrow and see what the official word is. That's a bummer, but they will get you fixed up (whether it is something procedural or a physical fix). Hopefully you still had an ok time shooting...at least you can just start at "12" if you've got more shooting to do at distance, and you can definitely still shoot groups. Have a good one!

I don’t have one but when you turn it back to zero you probably shouldn’t feel any clicks at least this is how it is on all the scopes I’ve messed with. If you’re feeling/hearing clicks then it’s adjusting the scope.

That’s true with the S&B 5-25 I have, but the 3-20 is different:

“The turret clicks can still be felt and heard when the screws are unlocked. This has no impact on the process of zeroing as the thread piece does not move while the setscrews are loose.”

That’s a pain because when I try to set the zero stop I feel and hear the clicks, and I don’t know it’s moving the reticle unless I look through the scope while turning it.

I’ll call S&B tomorrow. Maybe they can talk me through removing the turret or something like that to fix it.

If your POI=POA and you've dialed up 12 mils, to set the zero stop you need to:
  1. Reset turret to zero
  2. Lock turret, loosen set screws, unlock turret
  3. Dial up 12 mils
  4. Lock turret, tighten set screws, unlock turret
  5. Set turret back to zero (this effectively brings your POA/POI down 12 mils, to zero on the turret)
It is normal on this scope to hear clicks after you have loosened the set screws.

This should get you dialed in. Good luck.
