Sako TRG Receiver Pic Rail Screws

If anyone knows what the part number is for the screws that secure the factory Sako rail to the receiver, I'd appreciate it. I could not find it on any of the parts diagrams.

If you have a link, even better. Or a spec I can try to search for would also work.

Basically I bought gun, it came with a rail but only 3 screws and they aren't in the best shape. Any assistance would be appreciated!

Take a screw to a company like Fastenal and just have them match it up, it may be the easiest way to get replacement screws...

Approaches like that have worked for me, with other screws.
Wild guess: it might be metric.

I don’t see those screws listed in Sako’s spare parts catalog, I’m guessing they only come with the rail.

It’s an odd thread. I couldn’t find them for a badger rail that was missing 2. BO sent me a set. Glad they did.

M3.5 x 0.6mm is the size I believe.

Sako TRG 22 6.5CM

One of my original rail screws has a major thread diameter that measures 3.335mm, an OAL of 6.239mm, approximately 4mm from the end of the taper under the screw head to the end of the screw of which approximately 3mm is threads, the head has a diameter of 5.256mm and takes a T15 Torx Bit. I don’t have a thread pitch gauge handy.

Interesting; i wish the ones on my rifle were torx; they are just mangled flatheads.

Anyway - thanks for all the input. I ran into the same problem - not listed on any diagrams so it's looking like I might have to call MGW or Brownells or Beretta and see what they can come up with.

I'd also thought about checking out Fastenal but wasn't sure how likely it'd be they'd have this bizarre screw, and I didn't love the idea of hauling my rifle out there with me

Oh by the way I was informed that there are different screws depending on the rail so that's even better!

I would just bring a screw and the rail, they should be able to identify the size.

Are you sure that just isn't a "plain old" 6-48 screw? Tikka tends to use SAE in some of their stuff (like the barrel thread for example). Wouldn't be surprised if they were just a "regular" 6-48 TPI...and your measurements seem to be pretty close (without looking it up).

ETA: I just looked up 6-48 and it's .135" max diameter (3.335mm is 0.1312"). So I'm guessing you have a regular old 6-48 screw for the base. Brownells sells them by the bucket if needed (and they're the only ones that I know of that do, even McMaster's doesn't sell them).

The screws are in fact M3.5x.6 which also converts to UNF 6-40

EGW used to sell these screws in sets of 4 with a torx bit for $5. No idea if they still do.

They do indeed appear to be M3.5 screws

Measuring the screws I have yielded these figures:

5.25mm diameter at the head
3.3mm major thread diameter
6mm overall length


I don't have a solution yet but at least I know what I'm looking for!

BTW it appears that this screw is used on at least one version of the Tikka T3 as well...google image search yielded that same part # on a set of install instructions for a T3 rail

As mentioned above the screw on my 2006 trg42 are M3.5-0.6X10 thread I ordered them directly from www.mcmaster.com

I don't know if they changed the readings on later or US models , mine is a standard old one.
don't order the screws from Ebay, they are zinc alloy for the computer industry and will shred as you tighten them

Interesting that yours are 10mm; mine are 6 much like kimbergoldmatch's. I'd love to get some like he has with the torx head. I'm assuming that's newer; I'm just wondering why a recent TRG would still have the straight/standard/flathead drive.

Completely agree on the ebay ones; not touching that. Glad those worked for you and had the right countersink angle, that'd be a big win because that's been hard for me to find - a 5.25mm head. Unfortunately the ones on McMaster are 6.3mm and the ones I found with a countersink are 7. Not a lot of choice out there sadly.

I am sorry, you are correct, I changed the screws to 10 mm screws for the CADEX stock, as long as you have the correct thread the length can be trimmed.

In case anyone ever comes across this later...trying to find those screws is hopeless. You can find M3.5 screws in the right length but the head is never right...even if you find a countersunk flat head, the diameter is too big...5.25mm is way smaller than typical. So I gave up and I bought a rail. Hoping this one from EGW is worth it. Has lugs like the Near rail, is made of steel, and is parkerized to match the finish on my TRG. Seems a good fit.

Contessa also makes one that looks pretty good (and uses recoil pins like the factory unit) but they are scarce here and only available in 0 MOA. They made a 10, 20, and 30 MOA but those models can't be had in the US - the Contessa rails are Italian and have to be imported.

thinking about it, why don't you get a mount that attached directly to the Sako rail?
why do you need another interface between the scope and the action?
when my rifle was with the original stock, I got a mount spuhr that attached directly to the 11 mm rail machines to the action,my logic was that I didn't want to add another potential source of problem.

Well, price for one - the Spuhr is $410. I don't NEED two pieces but a rail and rings costs less than half. And I already have the rings because I was supposed to already have a rail. Originally the plan was to only have spent $80 on rings because the rifle came with a rail.

But even if that wasn't the plan..$410 is absolutely crazy money for a mount. I'm sure it's great and I'd gladly pay $200 but $410? Nope.

As for the badger, I ruled that one out because it doesn't have recoil pins/lugs. Or if it does, it's not obvious.

Anyway the goal here wasn't to post about mounts but to make sure I posted the results of my search for these screws and to basically save the next guy some trouble...essentially...don't bother trying to find 'em.

Those are pretty close to the original ones that came off my rail (see post #9 above), I’d just need to trim about 1.8mm off the length and about .05mm off the head diameter.

The eBay link is indeed the closest thing out there; it's the only one with a head anywhere near the right size. It's too long, unfortunately - 8mm where I would need about 6mm, but the head would need only a slight bit removed - just as kimbergoldmatch said. For $5 I suppose I could just try it out and see. The heads might fit in the rail but the length would for sure have to be cut. The idea was to find ones that really do fit; there's a certain point that there's enough brain damage that the $100 for a new rail is worth it.

I did get with a local gunsmith but he didn't seem interested. So let's say I buy those screws and then engage him to do the work, I'm quickly at $100 which is what the replacement EGW rail cost me. Anything that involves people's time is expensive.

If you have access to nuts in the same thread pitch, then shortening them yourself is pretty straight forward. As to reducing the head, that'll be dependent on how big the driver hole is (and whether there will be sufficient material left after turning the head down).

You will need two nuts.

Split the nuts with a jeweler's saw, or a very thin hack saw.

Thread the nuts on the screw to be shortened or turned, so that the slits line up together (nuts don't need to be butted up against each other).

Place the double nuts in a vise, so that the jaws are NOT on the face of the nut that is slit.

As you tighten the jaws down, the nuts will collapse now, and hold the screw firmly in place without damaging the threads.

File screw to length, and remove nuts (they will chase the threads at the end that may be jagged from filing). Done.

For the heads, do the same thing with the nuts, but instead of a vise, put them in the jaw of a drill press (again, ensuring that the three jaws are not on the side of the nuts with the slits). Tighten the jaw chuck to secure the inverted screw. Turn the drill press on, and using a file, grind the screw head down to size.

EGW sells replacement screws for their rails cheap. Badger might sell you a set. I got them from BO for my BO rail for free. Rifle was missing two screws when I got it. No idea what the previous owner was thinking how the rail was mounted to the action.

I had looked into screws from Badger or EGW but the issue there is the head - they use a much more common screw type (i want to say socket cap) which does not work with the factory rail.

In any case, I agree - i decided that for 9 dollars it was worth learning something. I ordered the 10 chinese screws and will see what I can manage - i've got two ways to try it. Worst case I'm out 9 bucks, best case I have a factory rail I can use or sell.

It'll probably be a month before I get them; by then I'll have the EGW rail mounted and probably won't want to remove it once i get everything put together and sighted in although who knows if i'll even be able to get to a range w/ everything closing down.

I've used the nut method to shorten a bolt or two. The most precise cutting tool I had then was a hacksaw. One nut was used to set the cutting length. The nuts chased the threads. I'm sure the bolts are still holding something onto a bicycle.

Since this thread is about Sako TRG rail screws, here’s a pic of the screws that fill the holes left by removing the factory rail when you put a Spuhr mount on, they‘re 3.5mm like the rail screws and measure 2.54mm in length. I tried making these but ended up buying the Sako screws... for $33.99. (Is anything Sako cheap?)

The $35 is worth satisfying one's OCD though.

Also - wanted to mention - Shars is a dead end for now. I'd have to buy the screws I think might work and then return them. Because everyone is working from home they aren't there to measure, unfortunately. Since I have the EGW rail and the screws for the regular rail coming (still need to decide what I'm going to do now as far as that goes) I think i'm done hunting this down...but maybe the next guy will benefit from all this research.

That’s why I posted the plugs, I had pulled the Spuhr off and found that some solvent had crept through the open rail mounting holes while cleaning the bolt rails and chamber and had started to etch the receiver and Spuhr.

I only realized recently that the holes go all the way through the receiver...I have to say that surprised me.
