This has probably been hammered to death, but what's the general consensus of these on the forum? I've shot the 22 and 42 and found them very accurate rifles, but can't understand why I haven't seen more of them at competitons versus AI and AI/Rem 700 clones. Any views on this?

They are not the flavor of the week,,,,,,yet.
When the .260's hit the ground I think they will really take off. One thing that holds them back are their accessories, they are pretty spendy, but, like anything else as they grow more popular the accessories will become more abundant, from more manufacturers.

Agreed.. Sako makes great stuff. Possibly the smoothest bolts in the game. It comes down to fit, what pleases your senses and finding availablity. We have great sponsors on here that can get you either system you want within a week. The AE and TRG22 prices are about the same anymore. Both top notch platforms and you can't go wrong with either. Plenty of aftermarket options if you don't want to go with the factory options (mounts, bipods and even mags). I actullly prefer a quality factory purpose built hard use rifle over a custom build.. but that's just my .02.

Could you elaborate on this a bit? I would love to be able to buy cheaper magazines for the TRG. I know Atlas is coming out with an adapter for the TRG so we will have another excellent bi-pod option. Unfortunately I am not sure it will be much cheaper then the Sako bi-pod when all is said and done.
To the OP the TRG is a great rifle, very accurate and easy to shot. You will not regret getting one.

I am sure Mike was talking about muzzle brakes, scope bases, bipods (harris if you want the cheapest route), and spacer systems. Magazines are an issue, but maybe we'll see some from a company soon. I'd like to leave mine stock and not get the KRG chassis block, so I'll keep pressure on magazine makers for now.

I have had quite a few nice rifles and am very satisfied with my TRG's. Now that KRG has brought out their AI magazine conversion kit , mags are a non issue. Yes, Kasey is coming out with a TRG piece but that doesn't mean you have to use it. Currently I am running an Atlas bipod on mine with a small pic rail that Kasey sells. Works great and solid as a rock.
There's not a single TRG accessory on my rifle with the exception of the mags, and even then I can run both (AI and TRG) on my rifle.

I got one and finally had the chance to stretch its legs out...sort of, only to 600. Dial, shoot, and listen for the steel. For me, the pistol grip large, so I don't use it much.
As for accessories, there a plenty of companies around that make bases and rings that are probably as good. I'm running a Badger base on mine, and Nightforce rings. Another good place to find a quality base is NEAR mfg, I've heard nothing but good thing about them.
I have an atlas bipod, and got tired of waiting for the guys at atlas to make an adapter, so I machined one out of aluminum. It's really easy to do, and you can tape it up if you're not the best machinist in the world to get a tight fit. I really like the way the gun rests on the bipod when it's in the spigot, a huge improvement to stock mounted in my opinion.
I think the only SAKO accessory really worth getting is the magazines. I know they are damned expensive, but they fit perfect, every time, feed perfectly, and are flush with the stock. Those qualities make the magazines worth it in my opinion, and the other accessories are replaceable.

It would be hard to find a better built and more accurate rifle for the money. I couldn't be happier with my 42! Even with the $500 bi-pod. It's a rock solid platform that performs time and time again!!!

if you care more about looks than function and feel i don't get your side of the story. i buy rifles and treat them like tools, whatever one gets the job done best and works reliably that is the one i will use regardles of what it looks like.
The point is to get bullets on target typically there are requirements about looks to get the bullet there. if there is i am fucked because there isn't a rifle that is pretty enough to make up for my ugly mug shooting it.

Having used Sakos for quite a while and now AIs , I tend to look at them a bit differently now , than I use to before I got my AIs .
Before I got the AIs , I looked at the Sako TRGs as the same as the AIs in most respects , except 1/2 the price , so a good deal .
After getting the AIs , my veiw has changed a bit , when you look at the folders , then the AI is more cheaper option over base gun than going the Sako route , Sako have done them selves no favours with the crazy price for that option .
If you forget the price difference & the folder option , for me it comes more down to function/form in a particular calibre .
If I want a 308 gun , I chose the AI AW , as I like the way it works with this cal , ie the mag design , bolt function etc .
Realise , they use different bolts/mags , the AI uses a wide body bolt & a double feed mag , and the Sako does not ( Sako uses a single feed design ) .
In 338LM , I like the Sako better in this cal , its really sorted , very smooth action , and the older TRG-22/42 bipod are a must , ( not the current one , too narrow legs ) .

I personally own both an AIAW & a TRG22 & I will say that I have a strong personal preference for the AI…. So maybe it is just personal preference, or as someone else stated it just, “The flavor of the week”.

2) Swapping an AI barrel out is as easy as ordering an action wrench from Thunder Beast Arms (http://thunderbeastarms.com/aiwrench.php) and following the directions and manufacturers recommendation.
3) Then there is the fact that “All major parts are interchangeable between rifles of the same caliber”. In the event you are shooting a competition & the RARE, RARE, RARE unlikelihood something were to fail on your AI (say a broke firing pin). You could let a fellow AI shooter shoot a station first, then he could pull the bolt out of his gun & give it to you to use.

I know you said you have a strong preference for the AI but, assuming nothing breaks on either gun and that you don't need to quickly change barrels, are there any advantages to the AI? I'm talking ergonomics, accuracy, etc. I realize the AI will always win out in a barrel swapping competition, but I'm just wondering if there's a lot of difference between the two functionally. Sako TRG is best out of the box. If you go custom barrel, Mcmillan stock then you will probably pay more AND get an (arguably) better rifle. But not by much. The 20" Sako's are very light and maneuverable. They also have a magazine that accepts longer OAL rounds.

You can swap barrels on a TRG with a KRG action wrench. KAG also makes a folding stock that is fantastic (I'm shooting one now).

TRG's fit so well, the standard stock is way better than, imho, the AI and other mcmillian type options. The standard TRG trigger is the best, I repeat the best trigger you will find on any rifle, it can be set to damn near whatever tickles your fancy ands it works really well. Accuracy, its all been said before but if you cant hit it with a TRG and a decent scope ammo combo you arent gonna hit it. Its shoots damn near everything Ive shot out of it sub moa. To sum up they are an awesome rifle, Id stack the TRG 22 up against any other 308 and I wouldnt feel shortchanged. Go Buy 1

Another TRG-22 owner here. I have always been impressed with the accuracy of this gun directly from the factory. I'm no competition champion but my TRG-22 has alowed me to be competitive with some very good shooters.
Most of the guns I see in competitions are customized (some a little some a lot) and that may be part of the answer. Many people really like the time spent customizing their guns so a factory tack driver like the TRG-22 might not be their first choice.
TRG accessories are priced high but you dont need many. There are very good aftermarket bipods, muzzle brakes, and cheek accessories. The magazines are the only SAKO accessories that really hurt. I have found that Baretta puts them on sale every so often.

I personally went with mounting the scope rings directly to the receiver route with the Spuhr mount as seen here: http://www.tnvc.com/shop/spuhr-trg-ideal-scope-mount-system-isms/
Can't comment on it as I have not received it yet (or my scope for that matter) but I know the mount at least is coming in early next week. That thread that yej0001 posted has a lot of good info, the Near Mfg stuff is top notch according to many and I almost went that route and I am sure I would be just as satisfied with the Near stuff as I will be with the Spuhr one.

It doesn't matter how you mount the scope as long as it's solid. I run a base and rings and do not have a single problem.
What "aftermarket parts" are you looking for? Bases are available. Brakes, bipod, KMG will have a folding stock soon. What is it that you "need"?

Near Mfg is my only choice for Sako bases. It is built like a tank and mates with all the recoil lug slots on the receiver.
