Rifle Scopes Savage 338 Lapua and Viper PST 6-24

Hey Everyone,

I know my set-up is not ideal, but I have to go with what I can afford. My question is how far can I reasonably take a Savage 110 FCP 338 Lapua with the Viper PST before I have to start using the reticle for hold-over? The scope has 65 MOA and the base will have 20, so I'm looking around 52.5 MOA elevation before zero.

I'm REALLY trying to stick with the PST if I can take it out to 1400-1600 yards, which i'm thinking I should be able to pull off. I know I can get there with the SS 5-20, but it's out of stock and I'd like to keep the extra $650 in my pocket.

Have same rifle with atacr on it.shoot 300 grain bergers and I calculate 45 moa at those distances . Buddy of mine has that scope and really likes it. It should do what ur wanting.

Thanks Mark. How do you like the rifle? Is the accuracy up to par? Does it handle the 300 gr well? I spoke with Savage and they said it was optimized for the 250 gr, but that seemed odd being it's 1:9 twist.

I'm debating keeping the HS stock when I get it or selling off the stock/bottom metal and dropping it in an XLR chassis. Cost would be a wash by the time you figure eliminating the addition of adjustable hardware.

I like the rifle and accuracy has been good so for. I shot a .5 group the other day at 100 so I was we'll pleased. I got my ammo from bob beck at extreme outer limits. It was berger hybrid hunter elites and will fit in mag. Also is lapua brass as I heard of extraction issues with other brands . I didn't have a issue with that. Think I'm going to change brake to a Ross shuler. If aci ever comes out with chassis for this rifle I will be getting one of those as well. Looking forward to some lifer range groupings this weekend. Ill post pics when I do.

Just a thought, if you run out of elevation, you can use the mil ticks at 0.5 mil increments (or MOA or whatever) on the reticle as holdovers, subtrace the appropriate 0.5 mil step from the firing solution. This will give additional range.

Look into the XLR chassis. I think that's the route I'm going. Should end up being a wash by the time I sell of the factory HSP and bottom metal and factor in no needing to install adjustable stuff on the HSP.

thanks ... I know that's an option, but I was hoping to get an idea of how much I can dial before that comes into play.

The first target was 2 weekends ago minimal if any wind on a steady bench with bags at a local shooting range. The second target was on a somewhat windy day 12-15 mph winds laying in a field using a bipod and rear bag. The gun will definitely shoot. I found out the hard way it did not like berger otm's at all. Bought 250, shot about 50 and they some loads would shoot the size of a paper plate in terms of groups. The best group I got out of the bergers was about 1 MOA. The SMK's will do >0.50 MOA every time if I do my part.

I have a Savage 110 FCP HS in .338 Lapua as well. Thus far I have finished load development and using Lapua brass, Federal Gold Primers, 300 grain SMK's and 92.0 grains of H-1000 I have shot the above at 200 yards. This is abour 0.022" off the lands and the muzzle velocities for the last 4 shots I chrony'd were between 2,783-2,795 fps. The only thing I have done to my Savage is put a Manners T5 stock, bed it, new brake, rifle basix Sav-1 trigger and put a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 on it. Thus far I have shot the gun at 200 & 300 yards and now that I have my load pretty much figured out I will be taking it out further.

I have the savage 110ba and the viper 6-24 (except my scope is in Mrad)
Assuming a lot of setup and enviromental factors nominal, I show:
1415 yd with fed gold metal match 300 gr.
1490 yd with fed gmm 250gr

Thanks for all the feedback. I would say from the looks the Savage and PST combo will allow me to go to the max of my current potential. No point in spending more until I can utilize it.

I don't have a 6-24 yet, but I do have a new 2.5 - 10 FFP Viper PST. IMO, as long as the viper line has enough travel for your application, it is all the scope the average shooter would ever need. Very nice glass, good feeling/accurate clicks, and all the features I really cared for.

Lets be honest though, there are better scopes in every regard, but for the average (non competition/job requiring shooter), this line really is prob. the best bang for your buck. It is where diminishing returns really start to set in. You can get better, but you're gonna feel it in the wallet as well.

I also learned that if I have to ask others which to buy (like I had up till i made my decision), I probably can't tell the difference or utilize the next incremental gain from a scope.

with the 300 Berger OTM`s and Lapua brass I get flat primers and sticky bolt at 87 and stuck cases at 88.5

I am shooting 85 grs with no problems and very good accuracy,,2625 fps. from 100 zero the 4.5-14 Leupold LR M1 has 90 MOA

I want burris rings with the same combination do I get the medium ones?

I have a Remy 700, 20 moa base, pst 6-24, and use XTR low rings.

I have shot this exact setup to 1800 yards with 300 scenars and retumbo. I am at sea level. I think I had to hold over a bit as I ran out of elevation.

maybe look into a 40moa base...I have one on my 300RUM and love the extra elevation!

The Vortex PSTs would be a great I also recommend looking at the NEW Burris XTR II.

A 40 or 45MOA base is ideal for .338LM if you intend to get the most out of it's ELR capabilities. And while the 6-24x magnification range is well suited, you're mostly going to be limited by available elevation.
