Savage 338 Lapua

My dad bought a Savage 338 112 model I believe “single shot no magazine”. It will easily hold under MOA for four shots, then jumps to about two. It seams to have a heavyish barrel but also feels pretty warm by shot 5.
I have no experience with this caliber and I know the savage is not top notch. Is the flyers due to heat that fast or should we look somewhere else. It has 6 screw night force rings and a night force bench rest scope. Also warne bipod.

What ammo? If the barrel is "pretty warm" wait longer in between shots.

PPU 250 grain. I guess I’m used to my 6.5 and 308 with thicker barrels. But I guess the 338 uses just a smidge more powder. ?

Factory loads or reloads? If reloads then have you shot them across a chrony? Shoot 5 shots off bags and take out the bipod variable

It did it on sandbags, then the bipod was purchased. Same results

I'd start by allowing for more time between shots.

That’s the plan. I can’t complain about the accuracy just hoping to get one to 1000 yard one shot hits before cooling.

PPU is pretty terrible in this caliber. I get similar results in my AXMC.

Try the Sellier and Bellot 250 grain cartridge if you want a low cost, good quality alternative.
