I am not familiar with Savages but found a good deal on a newer 7mm with the accutrigger. Questions:
1. What aftermarket barrel would you use?
2. Will that action support a 300 rum, 338 rum or edge without a bunch of work?
Thanks in advance gentlemen.

Re: Savage Build Questions

I presume you are talking about a 7mm Magnum.
Yes, it should accept the other calibers, but honestly, the 7mm is an outstanding LR accuracy cartridge.
Most companies will make a drop in barrel for you.
Benchmark barrels out of Washington State have a very good reputation (they don't have a website).
From 6mmBR:
Benchmark Barrels
Benchmark built its reputation with record-setting rimfire barrels, and now they are producing excellent centerfire barrels as well. Contact Ron Sinema or Barry Graber at (360) 652-2594 or email benchmarkbarrels[at]yahoo.com. No website yet. Location: Benchmark Barrels, 1105 Pioneer Highway East, Arlington, WA 98223.

Shilen also has started to offer Savage drop in barrels and does indeed offer a .338 edge barrel.

Good luck and keep us posted on the build.
Sharpshooter supply is an excellent resource for Savage stuff.

Re: Savage Build Questions

Thanks for the quick reply gentlemen. I need to figure out the action questions and that will help me decide what caliber to go with. I am really impressed with the 6.5 Creedmor for deer, but I want a 338 edge for elk and big bears.

I agree the 7mm is great, but I would prefer a 7mm rum with 180gr VLDs.

Re: Savage Build Questions

You may have a large shank barrel - Savage uses those on the WSM barrels, not sure about the 7MM.

Jim (Northland) or Fred (Savage) can likely tell you what you've got, and they are both great guys who can help you out. I've used both for builds.

Re: Savage Build Questions

yes you can do all the above in your question, it simply takes a barrel and then possibly a bolt face change, depending on what caliber you choose to go with. 7mag will work on elk and probably bear to. I know the elk for sure, cuz mine did just fine!

Re: Savage Build Questions

im building a 338 rum now on a savage RUM action. the magbox is longer than the 7mm mag, and no one im aware of offers an aftermarket extended magbox. my rum magbox has an inside length of 3.640ish, so that will limit ur OAL quite a bit. from what ive seen lookin into the edge ull never get a repeater workin on a savage action without, um, taking some liberties w a dremel or mill, and ud still need to find a longer magbox/follower. the RUM may prove to be problematic w longer match bullets as well, w the limited OAL. im not sure yet. will have to wait and see when i get it together.
