My Savage 10FP is having ejection problems. When I cycle the bolt it wont kick the empty brass out far enough and the spent case just falls back into the action. Whats my problem is the extractor claw wore out? I bought the rifle new in 05 if that helps. also would the bolt lift kit smooth it out? who makes it and what does it do exactly?

Probably the spring on the ejector wore out. I would order a new spring for the ejector, and spring and detent ball for the extractor. It all cost about $15 from midway.

The bolt lift kit simply smoothes out the action of lifting the bolt, I believe it's simply a shim and bearing that rides between the bolt handle and the bolt body. I think Stockade Gunstocks (Kevin Rayhill) http://www.stockadegunstocks.com/, and also Sharp Shooters Supply http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/ make this item, but I don't think it will fix the issue you're having with your Savage. It's designed to keep the bolt screw and cocking piece from rubbing against each other and binding when you cycle the action. If you are going to do any serious work on your Savage send it to Kevin Rayhill. He really is the master of Savage smithing, and he is a hellova nice guy to do business with.
Try flushing out the body of the bolt with Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber or carb cleaner. You probably have powder residue and carbon inside the ejector spring and it's gumming it up and reducing it's strength to the point where it will no longer eject cases with enough energy to clear the receiver. I recently had this same problem on my Savage 10FP and a good cleaning sorted the issue right out.
If flushing the bolt doesn't work give John Willson a call over in Maxwell. I think he is in the phonebook, but not the yellow pages. He is a good smith and should be able to get you sorted out. He is located on F.M. 1966 just south east of Co. Rd 228. Mark Pharr at Tumbleweeds Custom Rifles in Round Rock is also a very good smith, but that might be a little too far for you to drive.

Is your trying to toss the brass, or just letting go of it? After approximately 4000 rounds, mine was doing the same thing. Cleaned everything and changed the spring, but it still seems like it is just turning the brass loose before it gets all the way back. Somebody told me I need to replace the claw that holds the brass.

If you have the Bronze colored extractor, replace it... They wore out fast. For what it costs you can replace the Ejector spring, extractor and spring for about $10, and takes 5 min.

Common problem with savage. Instead of using the factory .120" detent ball replace it with a .140", usually available at some better hardware stores. This cures the slop and extractor grips the brass better. I would replace the spring and extractor as well.

Thanks for all of the info! It has the bronze colored claw and yes it seems as if it just lets go of the case to early. Is there a tutorial somewhere on how to do this? I have never done any work on the bolt its self.

For what its worth, my .223 Savage Edge/Axis has had same extraction problem since I bought it new.

Put bolt in Ziplock Bag.... Slide extractor out. The Bag is so the spring and ball do not shoot across the room and cause Domestic Violence. Goes back together in reverse order... VERY Easy.

I checked at the local shop yesterday and the have the parts plus a larger detent ball. I'll get it changed today and report back later. The extractor they have is from Brownells. If you need one, let me know.

Yup. sharp shooter supply will have upgraded parts for savages. They offer better design extractor too.

I had the same problem with my 338 win mag. After 200 rounds, it stopped kicking out the brass. I called Savage directly and ordered a new extractor, spring and detent as well as a new ejector spring. When I removed the extractor, the detent fell out and I looked at it. It almost felt like styrofoam. Anyways, got all the parts replaced and now it works like a charm.
