Savage Impulse

Very interesting. Between this and the Renegauge I think they have a new engineer coming up with and exploring new ideas

Isn’t this what the Blaser straight-pull does, though, with the effectively ball bearings? Did that patent just expire?

Edit; I was thinking of Heym.

Side note, this is basically what Barrett does for the barrel locking on the MRAD. It’ll hold things just fine.

😲
Uses the ball lock up like a Heym 30.
I wonder if it uses a standard savage footprint and barrels?

I don’t think there’s room in a 1.35” diameter action simultaneously for the standard Savage footprint barrel, a sufficiently robust barrel extension, and a sufficiently robust action. It didn’t look like a smaller action, so I’m leaning towards different barrel threading.

So the 55K to 65K psi from firing a live round will not push the bolt out because of its secure lockup but with a simple pull from our hand we will be able to achieve that?

I'd like to see more on this...

If you watch the video, the bolt handle drives a cam mechanism to lock the balls in place. Since the balls are driven radially, and the pressure on the bolt face is axial, as long as the angle between ball and action isn’t too shallow it’ll hold just fine.

It looks like when you pull the bolt back you are moving some kind of roller cam in the rear of the bolt allowing the pin to come back which allows the locking bearings to recede allowing the bolt to come back. That's my crude interpretation of it!

Very interesting design, only thing I will say is this definitely violates KISS. Not sure if the perceived gain in a little bolt manipulation speed is worth all that could mechanically go wrong with it. Time will tell I suppose....

other thing I will say about Savage is I can’t stand that damn Accu Trigger within trigger design. For me I wouldn’t touch one until Timney or someone else came out with an aftermarket trigger for it.

I’m pretty sure the Heym is about the same diameter at a rem 700.

They can run some pretty large High pressure cartridges no sweat.

I’ll try to find the pic of the Heym we disassembled.
I have been patiently waiting for a straight pull action that can be used for comps or play. Not just a hunting rifle. Why the fuck does it have to be Savage stepping up closer to the plate!!!
Lol

I always though kimber or weatherby or some other higher end outfit would utilize this design.
Gotta hand it to savage for beating them to it.

Someone really should work on that....

Looks a lot like a Swiss K-31 design as well. Kind of a Heym-Swiss hybrid.

Hopefully (if they have half a brain between all the executives) they will retain the inlet and barrel dimensions already in use by the after market, to drive the sales of their rifle.

That being said, I still remember when their first long range rifle came out...with proprietary magazines. When asked (at SHOT) why they didn't use the common AICS mag, I got a dumbfounded, blank look. Smdh...

If the price isn’t stupid I’d certainly think about getting one if barrels and inlets work.

Yeah I realize their are a good bit of aftermarket triggers for current Savage rifles. I just wasn't sure if this newer Savage Impulse uses the same older design.

I can’t say any bad things about the accu trigger in my savage.
It’s lit off well over 10k rounds and has a quite nice just a smidge under 2 pounds pull.

Yeah some people love it and it works quite well for them for me personally I just don't like that "trigger within a trigger" design. That's why my 338 RPR and 308 American rifle got a Timney trigger before I fired the first shot threw them.

I hate the accutrigger. A piece of paperclip and a dot of silicon keeps mine pulled back, leaving a crisp trigger <1lb.

Straight pull action seems superfluous, but the barrel sleeve might be nice.

I was just thinking like a week ago why no one makes a straight pull bolt besides Blaser and Heym. Especially with the popularity of PRS style comps, it would make sense for a custom manufacturer to make one. Surprised Savage stepped up, but this looks pretty slick. Hopefully they don't do the typical savage thing and make it another special inlet and barrel thread design. Also, I have no problem with the Accutrigger. I have had multiple Savages and don't have any complaints about it.

Asking because I don’t know, but should there be any concern about the small locking balls bearing surface to the receiver overtime creating dimples and possibly changing headspace I mean I am sure the balls are hardened as well as the receiver just a thought?
I wouldn't worry. K-31's have been around over a hundred dred years, and I haven't heard of one of those wearing out.

I did some reading on the Heym action and according to Wikipedia (take with a huge grain of salt) "Heym states they successfully had the SR 30 locking mechanism tested by the C.I.P. accredited Suhl proofhouse loaded up to a pressure of 800.0 MPa (116,030 psi; 8,000 bar). " IF that is true it ought to be plenty stout!

Hi,

Several other manufactures make straight pull bolt actions. You just have to look across the pond for them since all their roots are based in hog hunting EU style.

The Lynx rifle is pretty much the best aka simplest straight pull design in the world.

Sincerely,
Theis

The Heym SR30 and Anschutz Fortner are both Fortner designs. The Lynx is a copy of the Swiss K-31 (though much improved).

This Savage looks like it fixes the problems with the Fortners, and at an American price point $1300.

I was once a big savage fan, but have switched to rem 700 based almost completely. This may make me take a step back into the savage world if there are ever good stocks and triggers available for the impulse.
