Hey guys, I am new here and am just starting to really get into distance shooting. Still dont know much but I am learning a ton just from this forum.
I am currently looking for a rifle that will not only be good for someone just starting out but that will also be great once I actually really know what I am doing. I really dont want to go over $2k on the rifle. I checked out a Savage Model 10 - BAS the other day and really loved the feel. Very comfortable rifle. Any thoughts on it or suggestions for other rifles?
I prefer a rifle that has a magazine, bolt or semi-auto, in .308. I also prefer a pistol grip or something similar as I find it much more comfortable. Thanks!

Savages are generally more accurate out of the box than most newbies can shoot them. If the gun becomes the limiting factor, then they are easy to work on and a fair bit of aftermarket parts for it. You may want to consider picking up a cheaper savage, and putting an aftermarket stock on it, but if you have the money, do as you please.

I think its a good choice. I have been happy with the model 10 and 12 I have owned. havent gotten to run that rifle you are looking at, but I have fondled it at the shop and it seemed pretty buyable. Depending on what you are doing with it, it may be a little heavy.

as to other rifles, the savage 10 fcp that comes in a mcm or hsp stock is really nice for what you pay. Once I got some loads down, I really couldnt ask for much better out of the box performance. Price should leave $ for a SS scope and loading gear without going too far out of price range.

Great info guys I appreciate it.

I know very little about optics but I am planning on spending around $800 in order to fit the rifle the first time. After I become proficient with the first set up I plan on investing in a more expensive scope.

That said, though I know this is not the optics forum, any suggestions for optics in my price range for this particular rifle?

Has the savage aftermarket support started to become more prominent. I have heard that the aftermarket support is significantly less for savage than remmington?

For 800,
The Weaver Tactical 3-15 FFP mil/mil illuminated scope is impossible to beat.

You can pick one up for 700, which leaves you 100 for a very good set of rings.

Re: Savage Model 10 BAS - Thoughts?

I have a Savage bas with a mapul prs stock, harris bi-pod, and a Falcon Menace scope 4-14x44 mil. Great rifle with an amazing trigger the only complaint is how heavy the rifle is. The best load that I have used would be the 175gr Federal or Black Hills.
