Just wondering if anyone has picked one of these up and can give a report yet? I've been lurking for a minute now and all I see is chat about them. No one with a report.

If the parts add up, I expect alot out of it. I do have a few general questions on it. All of my physical wants in a precision bolt seem to be met. Sure wish I wouldn't have to get the matt blue ceramic coated for a more care free finish. Not that I expect to use the threads but, would that be a no no? Also wondering about the HS stock. Is it high enough not to need an additional cheek piece for proper eye placement? And does it need to be skimmed?

TIA. Just want to make sure before I start WWIII with the wife for dropping that kinda bank.

Re: Savage Model 10 HS 5R

You can bet your money that any Savage is going to be a shooter. AXEMAN has this gun and I know he loves it. Mine started out as a 308 then I switched the barrel to 6.5 Creedmoor but with the stock barrel it would shoot .5 to .75 MOA out to 500yd and right at 1 MOA at 1000yd. The stock is a huge upgrade over a factory stock. HS makes a great product and you don't need to bed it because it has the aluminum bedding blocks. You could skim bed it if you want but it's not necessary. As far as needing a cheekpiece, That is completely dependent on how you fit the stock. I plant my cheek into my stock when I shoot so I need an adjustable cheek on any stock I shoot with. You can use a stock pack too it's a lot cheaper. I think you will be more than pleased with your decision. Are you leaving enough money to get decent optics?

BTW: are you saying that you would rather have a stainless finish than the blued finish?

Re: Savage Model 10 HS 5R

Please forgive my ignorance (I'm not being facetious here...).

I see a goodly bit of positive comment regarding 5R rifling. I honestly don't know whether they actually shoot better or why.

Re: Savage Model 10 HS 5R

Savage has my $$$. My 0.5moa 17hmr sold me. Stainless would be great, I have a call in to Effie to see about a possible model 12 build for the receiver but, not sure if I can get the stainless barrel. If not, I'll just get Predetor to rhino coat it. Optics are always on my mind. I'm not a brand whore so Leo and NF are out. Thinking about either Millet or Sightron. Will be a x50.

Re: Savage Model 10 HS 5R

I've had 3 savage rifles in my life. A 110E in .30-06, an 10FP LE1 in .308 and even a Lee Enfield from 1942 that was lend leasted during WWII made my savage and all of them are awesome. Especially for the price.

Re: Savage Model 10 HS 5R

If you want stainless then get a model 12 and throw a stock on it. You'll have a bull barrel and a stock of your choice for right around the same price. Like Greg said, 5R rifling is great but I'm not sure how much better it shoots from the standard Savage barrel.

What are you shooting that you need 50x magnification? I don't see a 308 shooting out far enough to need that much, even with benchrest(which I shoot) a 32x is more than adequate even 25x is good. I shoot 9" plates at 1000yd and at 24x I can see it just fine. at 50x your probably not going to get a good enough sight picture compared to 25 or 32x

I would go with the Sightron. Mine has performed as advertised.

Re: Savage Model 10 HS 5R

Sry, didn't keen 50 power, 50 mil. Most of my shooting is 200 or less but, Oak Ridge is just up the road with 1000 and I'd like to be competitive. Maybe I'm putting too much into the whole 5r thing. I Just know how proud them Remmys are of the PS what ever they are. Also thinking this may be a limited thing for Savage to do as a stock option.

Re: Savage Model 10 HS 5R

They've been making the HS for quite a while I don't see it going anywhere. I'd look for a scope in the 5-25 power range. Sightrons good. Millet is okay, I'd steer for a Falcon Menace over the Millet. I have a Bushnell Elite 4200 Tactical that's freakin sweet too. Or wait for the new Vortex Viper PST's

Make sure the scope you get has a 30mm tube and you get a 20 MOA base if you want to get out to 1000yd with the 308, your going to need all the elevation you can get.

Re: Savage Model 10 HS 5R

Was thinking maybe Savage wouldn't continue to put the 5R out. I kinda like the not so common when I buy a firearm. I'm a collector as well as a shooter. I can't afford quantity but will spend the bucks for quality and oddity.

Re: Savage Model 10 HS 5R

Unfortunetly for you, I don't see 5R going anywhere. It is the hot new thing and I think if anything, all barrels will be done this way eventually. I would focus on getting what shoots, not so much what's collectible

Re: Savage Model 10 HS 5R

I think Savage plays a bit of marketing 'Russian Roulette'. They maintain a very broad line of products, and careful observers will note that along with many new offering, many old ones quietly disappear.

Of my own personal note is the disappearance of the 112BVSS and the .260 Rem chambering across their line. I have owned and heavily used one of each from Savage, and wish I could still recommend them to others, but they have become unobtanium.

This is no mortal sin. Catalogues list what people can be expected to buy, and some products just don't move enough to justify continued inclusion in a line. I can get an aftermarket barrel for .260, and I can remove (I hope I can, at least) that hokey muzzle brake that's been slapped onto so many otherwise outstanding -K models. A brake on a 223. Right. ...At least replace it with the older version which can be turned on and off.

I can't get my heart's desire. It's a long action FCP with an Accue-Stock. I'd buy one in .30-'06, but my true heart's desire is a 1:9" .280 Rem chambering.

But I also hear that their custom shop can be very accommodating.
