Going to buy a Varmint .223 and wanted some opinions. Going to spend about $550. The 2 at the top of the list is the Savage model 12 and the remmy SPS. Leaning tword the savage because it comes with accutrigger, floted, and piller bedded. Any thoughts would help and other brands for that price you would consider. I am LH so my options are slim

Witch one and why.

Thanks

Re: Savage or Remmy

If you aren't going to mess around with it too much the savage will be a good choice, and typically Savages comes with a faster twist as well. Which is great for shooting those longer, heavier bullets. The 700s in .223 come in a slow twist except the SPS tactical. The nice thing about 700s is they're super easy to fix up. Lots of parts and any gunsmith will work on one.

Re: Savage or Remmy

$$ wise the Rem is a better bet new as they hold value better, in turn the savage can often be had for a bargain price used - barrel wear on a used .223 is generally not worth considering as they can go 20,000 rds

something that you can try before you buy should trump the claims of internet sellers who all have 1/2 moa factory rifles (90% of which is BS)

Any other brand for the money?

Well... you are opening up a can of worms....

My take..

I am getting ready for hunting, I'm going to be static hunting so I am using a tac rifle, currently my customed up Remy 700, Shilen barrel, Whiskey 3 chassis. I usually get about 1 MOA with my 308 load and 175 SMK. I loaded some 178g Amax with the same data for hunting and the groups opened up to 1.5MOA, good enough for deer...

I then pulled out my bone stock Savage FCP HS in 308, it has a SS 10x on top. It shot .32 MOA with the same load, I shit you not. I am not a great shot, but I'm sticking with the Savage for hunting this year...

Not surprising that a load shoots good in one rifle but not another, no matter what the brand of rifle

Re: Savage or Remmy

as far as i see it if you want to do any work to it later on then get the savage because you won't have to hire a gunsmith. its pretty simple to do a barrel swap on a savage and the tools needed cost about 100 bucks and once you buy them you can keep using them to build more savages.

you can build a pretty damn good gun on a budget with a savage due to the savings of having to get a gunsmith to do your work.

If your only getting 1 moa out of a rifle with a custom barrel then maybe you should rework your load data. i have a stock remington 700 that shoots waaay better than that and so do many other people i have met. Savages are good rifles and so are Remington. but when you start comparing a gun with a custom barrel to a stock gun then its no longer remington vs savage, it is now shilen vs savage.

Re: Savage or Remmy

Thanks for all the info. I am new to this forum and hope to be for a long time. Again thanks to everyone for the info. So far looks like the savage is the way to go.

Re: Savage or Remmy

Coming from a used to be long time 700 lover, go with the Savage, they offer more for the money. Remy made some nice stuff back in the pre freedom group buyout, now their stuff is hit and miss.

Re: Savage or Remmy

Another option to keep in mind is Tikka or TC not as many after market it options. But I'm a pretty much strictly Remington guy and picked up a Tikka a little over a year ago.
.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. It shoots great an its just in standard weight (7mm 08).

I have a tikka t3 in 300wsm but the heavy barrel is $800+ love tikka would buy one in a heart beat

I think you're meaning this one from Mossdberg in 223 http://www.americanhunter.org/articles/mossberg-mvp/ Mossberg-MVP that uses the AR magazines. Buddy that is the smith for SSK got one and really likes it. Heck of a gun and a great idea.

Re: Savage or Remmy

Go with the Savage, if I was looking for a lefty bolt action I wouldn't consider anything else. I have two Savages, one in 300WSM, and another that I picked up from a guy on another forum in 243 and 284, both rifles are great, although I haven't shot the newest addition, the 300WSM shoots great.
