Zapped with the TIG and were ready to start blending it back into something recognizable.

After some "fluff n buff". Onto the mill.

Front end was a bit too long so I went back and filled it up as well.

Finish blending after the mill work.

And were done. Saved one from the grave. Always a good feeling.

On the back end of the receiver? No. There's really no need to. In fact, a lot of production actions are only heat treated up front. (Localized induction hardening)

Work like this is a whole order of magnitude different when it is up front by the lug surfaces. I've done it before but a whole lot more caution is implemented with heat sinks and more careful control of the Tig torch.

Great Job... Just out of curiosity... what's the price to fix something like that?

The only way I can bill stuff like this is Time n Material. It just takes what it takes. I had about an hour and a half in this one so it ran right around $300 bucks all told. I try to be respectful of the ceiling where it becomes more cost-efficient to just replace the receiver, but that also has to be tempered against stock fitment, barreling, and the nausea of having to do another 4473 form.

Ultimately, it is the client's choice as I have this conversation well in advance of doing any work.

This trade is no different from any other. Mistakes happen and over the years we've become known as a resource for people when trying to keep something out of the grave.

I'm not sure it'd work on a rimfire. I would need to have one in my hands to be sure.

It's possible. You need to cut a slot in the bolt body to work as a "guide track" for it. Yeah... Don't do it.

Why not, just not cost effective, or too much hassle? Or does it cause more problems than it solves

It works. There's not a lot of Material to work with in the places you want it.
