Scale Review

Re: Scale Review

If you are looking for a cheap but effective digital scale, the Gempro 250 has excellent reviews: it costs about $150. Any digital scale below this price point is probably junk. You'd be better off using a powder thrower or balance beam scale.

Re: Scale Review

I have the GemPro 250 and love it. Takes measurements down to the hundredth of a grain. I also used the RCBS Rangemaster 750 and liked it at first, but started to notice that it wouldn't re-zero and weights were inconsistent (I'd measure to 43.3 grains, then remeasure and it would say 43.2 or 43.4.) Not huge inconsistencies, but enough for me to get the GemPro. Now I can measure to 43.30 and can correct my loads if they are 43.38, whereas I could not do that with the Rangemaster.

Re: Scale Review

I think you would be better off with a balance beam. How much $ in components are going to be consumed based off the information that scale gives you? Is this really the place to save money?

My first advice is not to shop for a balance at places that sell reloading supplies. Shop for a balance at a place that only sells balances.

If you are not willing to spend at least $300 on an electronic balance, stick with a beam.

Re: Scale Review

Good choice Jackalope. I have a number of scales, but if I could have only one, it would be a beam type scale. My 1st scale was an RCBS 5-10. It is now around 35 years old and it still serves me well. When one of my electronic scales starts to act fishy, I always fall back on the old beam scale to find the truth.

Also, its hard to go wrong with Dillon.

It is a good scale if you are NOT weighing powder. I use mine to sort cases, and bullets for F-class matches. Seems to be ok for that but if you don't zero it every time the accuracy degrades to sometimes 5grns over or under.

Re: Scale Review

I have/had a Lyman M5, Chargemaster, Gen1 and 2 Prometheus, and a el cheapo digital, I still have the M5 and the Gen2 Prometheus, I sold the Gen1 to fund the Gen2, balance beam scales are the way to go hands down, they might not be as easy to use as digital, but are way more consistent, consistency is key, more than that rock solid consistency is paramount to long range shooting, in this day n age of digital this and that, an old school balance beam is far superior to any of the consumer grade digital scales.

Re: Scale Review

Re: Scale Review

For powder I'll stick with my beam scale.

For what I can afford to spend on a digital scale, I wouldn't trust the ones I can afford.

That scale seems real cheap to me. MTM should stick to making what they are good at making
