Suppressors School me on OSS 5.56 suppressors

A coworker of mine has one of the first or second gen of these. He bought it because it was super cheap.
Not sure which gen they are on now or how they differ from current production, but I was not impressed with it at all.
I recall that the hype about these was mostly about low back pressure.
The sound and gas blowback were subjectively no better than my SureFire RC and the way the can mounts is ridiculous.
The cans were mounted on 2 nearly identical SBR AR’s.

The ones now have a quick connect brake. I know from videos that the older OSS mount was a direct thread on and you had to be careful taking it off or everything would fall out of it. That was a bad design in my opinion. All the hype on the newer design and the fact they got a government contract with H&K has me looking at them for my 10.5 and 11.5 SBRs.

I saw a video were they compared the sound at the muzzle and at the ear using a meter. The OSS was a couple decibels higher at the muzzle and it was more than a couple of decibels lower at the ear, they didn’t mention the competition by name. It wasn’t a SureFire, I know that.

The videos they put out are with a meter that can't even measure gunshots accurately. Now that I think about it I can't think of a single video on YouTube of an OSS silencer being metered properly.

Buy a CGS Helios QD, especially for a 5.56 SBR. It'll do all the stuff an OSS silencer will do and more and it'll do it better.

I own a couple older gens and have shot my friends new QD can. I will be purchasing a Ti can soon. I run an older model can on a 12.7" upper which is on the edge of hearing safe. Honestly it depends on what your expectations are. In my opinion you're going to have a hard time getting a 10-11" 5.56 hearing safe. I tried many cans and was never satisfied and have found that 12.5" 5.56 is the sweet spot for effective suppression of 5.56 while trying to reduce length. I would buy a 7.62 and shoot overbore, hoping the additional volume would help. I can tell you that on a 14.5" 5.56 the tone using a 7.62 can was great and "hearing safe" (none are technically hearing safe but no ping/ringing for me). I would say that without a doubt you will reduce gas face and pressure on your rifle, thats the whole point of the design. This is from experience not a youtube video or a forum. The new QD design is great. The reverse thread system keeps it tight all the time. Too bad they can't shake the stigma of their earlier generation cans.

The new QD design on the newer OSS cans is a much needed improvement. It’s way less complicated. As for gas in the face, it does make a SIGNIFICANT difference. When shooting a 14.5 mid length griffin barrel I was severely overgassed with my spec war 556. Nothing against that can, it’s a beast but it had a lot of backpressure. I put on an adjustable gas block and that helped a lot with gas to the face but you still got that extra pop in your right ear from the chamber pressure. Now I’ve seen videos and read product guides and I have no doubt that can vs can, the other more traditional baffle stack designs can post better numbers but....just from my experience the OSS can was quieter at the shooters ear than my specwar(which is a pretty impressive sound suppressing can) and that was simply because I didn’t get that extra ear cracking pop in my right ear from the chamber when it ejected a case. The recoil impulse was also smoother. So will I be only buying OSS cans from now on? No. But I will definitely be buying one for my semi auto 556’s.

My agency recently tested an OSS can on a 10.5” 5.56 and I was not impressed at all. It was nowhere near hearing safe (sounded like an unsuppressed 9mm pistol with no ear protection) and still produced a large flame at night. That being said, there was no extra gas in the shooters face and ejection was nearly identical to unsuppressed. Our current Sig SRD556 cans are much quieter and contain nearly all of the muzzle flash. The OSS cans may perform better on other platforms but I was highly disappointed in this case. And just a side note, we’re very happy with our Sig suppressors. The reason for testing other cans was for a potentially larger purchase for patrol officers.

Shot my friends 10.5 LWRC with a 7.62 OSS at the range Friday. It’s really pretty effective but it’s definitely closer to 140db. Not bad for a few shots but wouldn’t shoot all day without ear pro.
To be fair, I wouldn't shoot any can all day without ear pro. I did that years ago and my ears started stinging on the car ride home.

I shot the OSS 7.62 can on a 5.56 AR under overhead cover about two months ago. I think it sounded really good. It was much quieter than I’d expected. It was daylight so I couldn’t see flash. Recoil impulse was smooth & the guy was using a BCM charging handle which vented the gas well. I shot about 25 rounds & no gas face. Brass ejection was normal.

Sooo, pew science on the mk18, cgs Helios qd scores a 27.1...oss 556 scores a 31...was this metered properly?
