I'm planning to head out tomorrow to shoot my rifle with a nf scope in larue spr mount.

This is a .308 ar and I just noticed my scope is sliding foward under recoil. I thought I had the screws torqued down correctly with loc tite applied, but it has moved about 1/8" from my witness marks.

What should I do? Just tighten things down even more? If I do that will I still be good to go tomorrow?

Re: Scope body sliding foward under recoil

Did you use a torque wrench to tighten down the screws? Really though, it shouldn't take that much torque to hold the scope in place. When I don't have a torque wrench, I just tight using no more torque than I can apply with the short end of the hex/torx wrench.

Re: Scope body sliding foward under recoil

Take them out clean the threads, reapply blue locktite, and torque to Larue's specs....clean the scope tube and ID of rings to clear particles that may have slid into the clamping surface.

Re: Scope body sliding foward under recoil

A goofy question, but how much will my zero change when I move the scope back to where it was? I had an unexplained change of 1 moa(had to move poi higher), I see now it much have been the scope sliding foward. Will it go back to the original zero if I put the scope back where it started out?

Re: Scope body sliding foward under recoil

If you are using larue's split ring design (Most SPR mounts, but not the UBR mount if I'm remembering correctly), remember to fully tighten the bottom screws before tightening the tops screws. With the bottom screws torqued to spec and the top screws left loose, this should allow you to move the scope into position and then finally tighten the top screws.

This is in the directions but seems to be disregarded by many people. (Evidenced by some of the mounts I've bought second hand and people complaining about scope movement with this design.) Split ring design like this, should have superior holding strength vs clamping rings.

Re: Scope body sliding foward under recoil

Salmonaxe,

I tightened the bottom screws just like it says in the instructions. I was then able to level the scope and place it back where it originally started before tightening the top screws.

The biggest pain was removing the old loc tite. I used alchohal and a tooth brush to remove the majority of it. However, there is still a little left that I couldn't get so I just applied new loc tite and tightened everything down per instructions. I've never had an issue before so hopefully this was a one time deal.

Luckily, my nf finish wasn't messed up like I thought it would be.

Gonna hit the range tomorrow so hopefully all is good and it holds. Thanks for the help.

There's no reason it should. The opposite, actually. Much of the clamping force of the screws is absorbed in compression of the bottom portion of the mount and various degrees of bending of the ring halves. With a conventional horizontal layout, 100% of the clamping force of the screws on both sides goes to squeezing the scope.

Re: Scope body sliding foward under recoil

Holding strength vs. compression. You do not need to squash your tube in order to hold it. Instead with the single split, the flexing of the ring wraps around for nearly full even contact with the tube. Making for a near perfect match of ring to tube shape. Almost like bedding your rings to your scope. Yes there's minimal compression but that is desirable because you don't want smash your scope's tube.

Here's a guy who makes a single split ring that is somewhat nonconventional, but has a good heatmap.

I know it's not a scope ring, but on this page is an example of how strong the holding force of a single split ring design can be.

I don't agree with the bold. The split ring clamp has the top and bottom of the scope tube to react the eccentric loading of the clamp screws, this induces a bending moment that drives the corners of the scope caps into the scope tube.

I do agree that the vertical split plane of the LaRue system absorbs much of the lower screw clamping force and is a lower grade solution to the horizontal clamp type, however, the strap clamp type solution posted by Salmonaxe (the ARC rings) is a better solution for the following reason.

The deflected shape of the split clamp design looks like a snowman (exaggerated) and results in 4 point contact, not full clamping force. This means that for an equal amount of axial friction force imposed by the rings, the contact points must be under significantly higher load due to the reduced contact patch.

Upon lapping rings into place it improves but it is not 100% conversion on the traditional split clamp design.

The strap clamp design functions like a strap brake and imparts an enormous level of grip for very little screw torque (thus lower cap preload and less scope tube deflection due to the more efficient stress footprint and loadpath.)

Re: Scope body sliding foward under recoil

The bottom screws on the single split rings like Larue and Warne don't really serve the function of holding the scope. They are just a means for the user to place the scope inside the rings. After that they should be considered a fixed system. Only the top 2 screws impart any real holding forces on the scope.

If you take the ARC rings and rotate them 45 degrees they are essentially a vertical single split design like the larue. Of course the split is angled in the direction of the holding force of the screws and the screw placement is such that the force imparted on the split isn't as offset as much as the Larue and Warne rings. This probably distributes the contact forces even more evenly that the traditional single split design.

Yes and no.

The true tangential contact is the defining line. If you read ARC's website, there is no radial offset in the screws to the scope body, they are tangentially arranged so that no moment is induced about the scope body in the manner that a split clamp does.

Re-orienting the screw position would not degrade the ARC setup to the point where it is essentially a LaRue setup.

Re: Scope body sliding foward under recoil

I understand, I was just trying to show that the design isn't incredibly different than that of the Larue and Warne rings. Just an improvement of that concept by changing the split direction and screw placement.

Yes, actually you do. That’s where the force of friction comes from. You can have 100% contact but with no force to the normal you will have no force of friction and the scope will be free to move.
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Here's a guy who makes a single split ring that is somewhat nonconventional</div></div>
I wasn’t talking about those rings. Those rings operate in a completely different manor than the Larue mount. Completely different.
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Salmonaxe</div><div class="ubbcode-body">The bottom screws on the single split rings like Larue and Warne don't really serve the function of holding the scope. </div></div>
Bingo. But the hinge in the ARC ring does. It reacts with the same force as the screws on the other side. Completely different.
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body"> Only the top 2 screws impart any real holding forces on the scope.</div></div>
Exactly. And whatever clamping force they develop, the scope only sees that minus the amount of force used up bending the rings and prying at the screws on the base.
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: bohem</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I don't agree with the bold. </div></div>
Draw a free body diagram and balance it. Then you will. There is nowhere else for the force to go. Any fitment issues resulting in localized areas of increased pressure (note the different direction) will not change this. They can’t.
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body"> however, the strap clamp type solution posted by Salmonaxe (the ARC rings) is a better solution for the following reason.</div></div>

First, as stated above, even in cases where the “4 points of contact” is occurring, this does not reduce the total clamping force on the scope tube. It can’t.

Secondly, without getting too far in the weeds here, please keep in mind that the “4 points of contact” occurring at all requires specific assumptions about fit-up and relative stiffnesses of the assembly which are often not the case.

But again, I was not commenting on the ARC rings as they have nothing to do with the original subject and I believe they are a very nice design. People should not encounter the slippage with them that is sometimes encountered with the vertical split mounts that we were originally talking about.

Re: Scope body sliding foward under recoil

Arguments about clamping forces, etc., aside...if you have continuing slippage problems, dust some powdered rosin (think baseball rosin) in the rings and on the tube and torque it down. Stops slipping, helps prevent scratches and comes off easily with alcohol or acetone. JMHO

Thanks for clarifying the points you were making. The equal forces of friction result in higher contact pressures because of the reduced contact patch with the deformed shape.

I should clarify my point about the clamping force. It goes into clamping the tube, however it ends up driving the corners into the scope tube from the elastic behavior of the materials. The rigid body behavior balances out cleanly like you said.

My verbage choice was poor in the post you're referencing.

The fitment issues of the scope rings is one problem to worry about, but even with a diametral tolerance mismatch that causes problems the elastic behavior of the split clamp design creates small, localized regions of high contact stress.

High contact stresses are evident when the scope has clamp marks on it that correspond to where the split line of the rings is.

The clamping force is focused into that region and is causing a number of issues, in the worst cases the plastic deformation is so bad as to render the internals of the scope useless.

I just checked it again to verify since it's been a while since I wrote the initial review on these months back, and indeed the freebody balances out as it must. But that is a rigid body behavior and it assumes equally infinite stiffness of the parts in contact.

Look at a small region of that freebody, my main point about the "4 points of contact" is really 4 small patches of contact driven by the corners of the scope cap rotating under the induced moment from the screw forces to drive the cap diameter smaller and therefore cause high contact stresses. This is where the rigid body assumptions break down and the elastic behavior drives the analysis.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Secondly, without getting too far in the weeds here, please keep in mind that the “4 points of contact” occurring at all requires specific assumptions about fit-up and relative stiffnesses of the assembly which are often not the case.</div></div>

If you'd like to discuss more via PM's or email I'd like to as I see certain stiffness issues but not ones which would preclude the behavior I described above to neutralize the stiffness assumptions to get away from a snowman shaped deformation pattern. Would you mind discussing it more?

The stiffness issues that I see are this:

High aspect ratio tubes (large OD to wall thickness ratios) are very soft in localized radial contact.

The clamp shell on a traditional mount has a very stiff local region near the clamping screws.

Large forces are in play with a soft scope body and a stiff contacting point.

Even if the same materials are used the load path from the scope ring to the scope body in the radial direction is extremely poor.

Rigid body behavior would have no difference in the various forms of clamp design, however, the elastic behavior is driving it I think.

I suppose it does boil down to your statement here:

The efficiency to which the screw torque is transmitted into axial load and then into frictional force via contact pressures is the defining trait between the various designs.

Re: Scope body sliding foward under recoil

Thanks for killing my point via techno jargon only an engineer can understand...

Real world experience has shown me that single split rings have held very well with absolutely no damage to the scope tube. Yet I've seen a number of scopes damaged by standard clamping rings Even when tightened to the correct torque. I've also seen several that have slipped in those type of rings. (Some of my own included.)

If the tube diameter and the inner diameter of the clamping type rings differ, they suck at holding unless you squish the tube to the point that the edges of the top ring half is crashing into the side of the tube body.

Single split rings are slightly oversize (And I think oblong). When the bottom screws are tightened the scope will still move freely in the rings. Tightening the top screws flexes the rings together so that they follow the outside diameter of the tube. I'm sure if one was to make a heat map, it would have more pressure at the top of the ring vs. the bottom. But I'm sure that the pressures are radially more evenly distributed vs the standard clamping ring which are highest at both sides where the rings meet and the screws are.

Experience has shown me that double split clamping designed gasblocks/front sights on AR type rifles have a high tendency to move under recoil. They suck at holding and one has to tighten the piss out of them to keep them from moving.(This is why you rarely see them and the ones that you do are generally regarded as garbage.) Yet single split clamping gasblocks never moved. Single split gasblocks are also considered the best option for a precision AR because it's clamping (compression) force doesn't distort the bore. (or if it does, the distortion is very little.)

I don't see how these systems can't be compared to the same basic system of holding scope in a ring.

I also don't see how the ACS ring is SOOOO different than a single split ring that it cannot be compared. It has a single split. The split is angled in the direction of the clamping force yes... The clamping screws are not offset like on the standard split rings... The base isn't fixed like on a standard split ring, and is instead hinged. I see it as just an improvement of the same concept.

Jon, I know you have a stake in this, because of the mount you make. I'm sure it's a great mount. If mount and scope are of high quality, then most likely the fit will be next to perfect and will hold without slipping.

I see the single split ring design as a simple design that doesn't have to be perfectly executed to mount scopes that potentially don't match the exact inside diameter of the rings. Especially if one doesn't want to potentially damage their scope.

Draw a free body diagram and balance it. Then you will. There is nowhere else for the force to go. Any fitment issues resulting in localized areas of increased pressure (note the different direction) will not change this. They can&#146;t.

Again, I wasn&#146;t talking about those rings at all. They work completely differently and are a very good setup. However:
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body"> results in 4 point contact, not full clamping force. This means that for an equal amount of axial friction force imposed by the rings, the contact points must be under significantly higher load due to the reduced contact patch. </div></div>
First, as stated above, even in cases where the &#147;4 points of contact&#148; is occurring, this does not reduce the total clamping force on the scope tube. It can&#146;t.

Secondly, without getting too far in the weeds here, please keep in mind that the &#147;4 points of contact&#148; occurring at all requires specific assumptions about fit-up and relative stiffnesses of the assembly which are often not the case.

But again, I was not commenting on the ARC rings as they have nothing to do with the original subject and I believe they are a very nice design. People should not encounter the slippage with them that is sometimes encountered with the vertical split mounts that we were originally talking about.
</div></div>

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Secondly, without getting too far in the weeds here, please keep in mind that the &#147;4 points of contact&#148; occurring at all requires specific assumptions about fit-up and relative stiffnesses of the assembly which are often not the case.</div></div>

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">
Exactly. And whatever clamping force they develop, the scope only sees that minus the amount of force used up bending the rings and prying at the screws on the base.</div></div>

The efficiency to which the screw torque is transmitted into axial load and then into frictional force via contact pressures is the defining trait between the various designs.

I thought you were talking about the ARC rings in addition to the various split clamp designs and the over-arching comparison wasn't making sense in my head.

Wow, I am impressed at the number of words present in this thread.

FWIW, I made it back to the range yesterday and all seems good. After 100 rounds the scope hasn't moved again, and luckily my zero was only off by 1.25moa low.

Yes, actually you do. That&#146;s where the force of friction comes from. You can have 100% contact but with no force to the normal you will have no force of friction and the scope will be free to move.

Re: Scope body sliding foward under recoil

The wider the rings, the less the clamping pressure. I try to avoid very wide rings. The cure-all for this problem is a strip of condom. Clean the condom, cut a 1/2" strip with very sharp scissors. Clean the scope and wrap the condom around the scope where it will be clamped. As you are wrapping, stretch it to about 3/8 wide which will also make it thinner. More than one wrap will not fit. Obviously you need to locate the scope and mark it before you clamp, moving it after will be difficult. The scope will rotate to align vertically.

Sure, I’d like to. I’ll ping you when I get a chance.

I don’t doubt your experience at all as most of the time the vertical split mounts do work just fine. However you have to acknowledge people having scopes move or screws come loose when not enough locktite is used is not all that uncommon either. Likewise, while there are a multitude of conventionally styled clamping rings that don’t do a good job of holding the scope and can mark up the scopes quite often, whether it’s due to poor design, execution or simply quality control, those results do not automatically transfer to all rings of that arrangement.
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body"> I'm sure if one was to make a heat map, it would have more pressure at the top of the ring vs. the bottom. But I'm sure that the pressures are radially more evenly distributed vs the standard clamping ring which are highest at both sides where the rings meet and the screws are.</div></div>
That may be the case or it may not be the case at all. You can’t generalize in that manor. A small thickness or angular error where the vertical split rings bolt to the mount can really mess things up. And of course clamping rings could be designed such that they don’t touch the scope at all where you're talking about. Without looking at each design in detail, you can’t make the above assumptions.
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Jon, I know you have a stake in this, because of the mount you make. I'm sure it's a great mount. Thanks, but I must assure you the mount will work great with cheap, low quality scopes as well. A good design will hold the scope securely without marking it up within a wide tolerance window. Great care was taken in the design of my mounts to assure they do just that. They aren’t the only way to skin the cat, but they’re certainly one of better ones.
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Monkeyman</div><div class="ubbcode-body"> The cure-all for this problem is a strip of condom… </div></div>
Personally I’m of the opinion that if you need to put latex, rubber, glue, tape, powder or any other sort of gunk on your scope in order to keep it from moving, you really ought to upgrade to a better mounting system. A good mounting system won’t need any of that.
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">The wider the rings, the less the clamping pressure. I try to avoid very wide rings.</div></div>
You should do just the opposite. Pressure isn’t what keeps the scope from moving--though it <span style="font-style: italic">is</span> a large contributor to ring marks. Unless the scope is literally crimped around the ring forming a mechanical connection (something you want to avoid obviously) the available longitudinal force is dependent upon the clamping <span style="font-style: italic">force</span>, not pressure. This maximum longitudinal force will be the same with a wide ring or a narrow ring with the same clamping force. However a wide ring spreads the clamping force over a larger area which lowers the pressure and lowers the chances of damaging the scope.

Of course you can also add another screw to the wide ring to increase the clamping force while only having the same pressure as a narrow ring with less clamping force. If you’re having trouble keeping a scope from moving, that’s a good way to go.

I smear a very thin swipe of Shoe Goo or Goop on the inside of the rings on my heavier kickers (.300 Win etc).
It stays soft enough to level the crosshairs and then I like to leave it set up overnite or more.
It cured my slipping problem with Warne rings.
I can never seem to find the powdered rosin that many recommend.
Not as proper a fix as high dollar rings but it does work for me.

Re: Scope body sliding foward under recoil

A quick question I just thought of while reading some other threads on a similar topic.

Can the interanls parts of the scope be damaged in a situation like mine where it is sliding forward under recoil? I am reading a thread where it said that a scope can become damaged interenally when in a loose ring.

Will this happen in 50 rounds of so?
