Rifle Scopes Scope for 300 NM, is 16x enough?

I need to put glass on my Lone Peak custom 300 Norma.

It will be a crossover rifle for local long range matches and hunting here in NZ. I want to shoot to 2km and most matches are 400m - 1700m.

I have Hawken hybrid LR rings with 25 MOA and a Proof Sendero barrel.

I am torn between a 5-25 Minox MR4 or the NF ATACR 4-16 Tremor 3.

Is 16x enough mag!?

I’d suggest a little more mag personally, others may disagree. In NZ, you are blessed with excellent
viewing conditions with clean air and low temperatures a lot of the time, which allows higher mag
to be used. At least 25x can be very useful trying to spot impacts and misses at ELR distances: just
like horsepower you don’t have to use it all the time, but it’s great when you need it. Seeing misses
in all that green grass you have over there can be tough, more zoom is your friend in that situation.

I could see a 16 or 18x on a rifle strictly for hunting. But if you want to stretch its legs a little more horsepower would be useful.

I have a 25x on mine.

Was shooting a 338NM yesterday with a 16x hensoldt to just under 1800.
It’s totally doable.

Personally I would want more magnification.

I'd be putting something with more magnification on personally, I have a 3-15x on my .300 Win Mag and am seriously considering swapping out for something stronger

I went from a NF 5-25 to a NF 4-16x on my DT. I rarely get to shoot past 1000 yards, but I am comfortable out to 1400ish with 16x. I haven't looked further. As a recovered Mag Whore, I would consider more up top for your use. NF 7-35 would be at the top of my list for a rifle meant for beyond 1000 yards.

I used my Hensoldt 4-16 at a mile no issues seeing. Clarity is more important than magnification.

Plenty of magnification for 1200m last weekend. Good FOV and splash observed. Really enjoying the MilXT from NF, reliable for dialing and holding over.

Even managed to get some Lapua brass in NZ which is like moon rocks!

Shooting well with the 225ELDM and RL33 @ 3020 FPS. 1/2moa but capable of better, shooter needs more practice.

I have a K624i with AMR reticle on my .300NM.

Of course its all personal opinion, but I think the AMR reticle is about perfect for ELR work. Love the christmas tree reticle with the 0.2 mil graduations on both the elevation and windage axis'. Floating center dot. 39 mils of elevation graduations in the reticle, and plenty on the windage side. Definitely doesn't feel as "busy" as you would think when you get behind the scope.

Unfortunately I don't think this reticle is offered in the new K525, but I'm fairly certain there are dealers out there that still have stock of the K624 with AMR.

You should try to match your scope to the rifle(a big long scope on a compact rifle looks goofy, and by the same token a 2.5x compact scope on a 26inch barreled .264 Win looks just as goofy). But having said that know that sometimes you have to take something that looks a little "off" to get the job done. A 2.5x fixed power is too little scope for a 22/250. A 4x12 is too much scope for a 45/70. Your .300 Win mag is a reach out and touch someone caliber. If you're going to use it for everything(load light bullets for varmints, heavier bullets for big game),a 4x16 would probably be a good fit. If it is a big game only rifle, you won't need all that magnification unless you hunt where you will be getting mostly very long shots. I like Leupold, Burris, Nikon, and Millet scopes
with an unapologetic preference for Leupold. I know these are my personal opinions and yes everyone has a couple. Hope these help.

mine arrived last week, miscalculated on scope mount height so pinched the mount off my now prohibited AR to get me going
not a hunting rifle though. NSX works but eventually will replace with ffp
