Getting together my Savage Long Range Hunter in 300 winmag.
I would like to say I am an ethical hunter. I shoot my rifles enough to know where they are for ranges I feel I can reasonably shoot and have a high percentage kill shot on deer and elk.

I have studied for days (weeks, months), and I have narrowed my choice down to two scopes
Viper PST 2.5-10
Viper PST 4-16

In a 300 winmag, I can reasonably say I can shoot a deer, and kill it, at 600 yards (this is not a magic number, but I have shot to this range with other equipment and I am comfortable with my DOPE I have earned). I am now torn as to power of magnification.

I am not asking you to say "buy this one cuz of (fill in the blank)", but rather, "In my experience, I would opt for this power for this reason."

I am not sure if that is too much to ask, just seeking education and knowledge. There is $100 difference in the price, not that either is out of a reasonable price range for me, but that is where I am stuck.

Thanks

if only to 600, either should be okay---but with the longer range potential of the Winmag I would get the 4X16 for the greater magnification when you want to shoot to a 1000---
4X16 was always my favorite scope power until they came out
with 5X + power ranges---currently thinking about the very same
4X16 for a 6.5 Grendel build 'cause it's about the best I can afford

Ogre,

If you're hunting in mixed terrain and heavily wooded or brushy areas that open up into parks, I'd get the 2.5-10. 10x is plenty for 600 max. But, if you hunt in more open plain type area, the 4-16. You may want to take a long poke at an antelope someday...

I hunt with a more powerful optic and it can definitely be a liability when things get thick and close. But my rifles are multi-purpose and I really appreciate the magnification when I shoot over 1000 yds.

Ogre,

I have not had too much hands on with the PST's, only what my buddies have shot with. They are not too bad from what I saw. I put a Leupold Mark 4 LRT on my 300 win mag and what a difference! It was a bit pricey, however in the long run it's paid for its self! It was a little out of my price range so it took me awhile to get one but the wait was worth it!

Re: Scope for 300 winmag: Viper PST

Well, it has been decided. I had a LONG chat with my wife (since we hunt together exclusively). She has a .243 with a leupold 3-9, my son has a 3-9 on MY 30-06 (it is still mine, lil bastard thinks he gets it...), so I have decided to go with the 4-16x50.

What I did not know was that it was also offered in FFP, so I was hung up on that for about .3 seconds. I only live once, only buy REALLY good scopes, and $150 (now $250) can be blown in a trip to Reno, going to dinner a few times, a movie or two. However, the scope I can pass to the grand kids (I am 34, and that had better be a LONG freaking time before I am a grandpa), so here is my decision:
Vortex Viper 4-16 ffp mil/mil

Order will be placed as soon as I get paid, and should be here before March.

Thanks for the constructive thinking for my weak brain.

Carry on.

Re: Scope for 300 winmag: Viper PST

Before you lock into a final decision, it might be a consideration to wait until a few critical minded folks get their hands on one of these to assess the glass quality and overall opinions of these scopes. Just a thought...
