First post though I have done a ton of reading here prior to logging in since a 2011 sign on date!

Bought a Ruger American Gen 2 Ranch in 6mm ARC. Barrel is 16.1 inches and overall length is 35.5 inches for reference.

Been looking at the following scopes:
Athlon Helos 2x12
GPO super compact 4x16
Arken, and swampfox look interesting
Vortex Viper PST G2 in 2x10 and 3x15 (upper limits of spending)
All FFP
The GPO Centuri Compact is so new I realize reviews are limited and I've read a members here numerous times.
Athelon - another forum I am on does "drop tests", so far two of the Athlon Helos have failed the testers tests. With that I like the features and price. And I take these tests in consideration and not gospel as some of those forum members do.

My thought process in these scopes was that this is a short rifle overall and I really dont want a scope near as long as the rifle.
I can afford more scope. But for what I am doing I don't think I need a thousand and up optic. A member here, and I quote, "not everyone one needs a $3000.. optic on a $500.00 gun." I want to put other money towards a suppressor soon.

I casually shoot and hunt thick West Virginia woods usually. I'll take any recommendation in something 2x-2x to 16x powers.

And while I am asking is something like this mount needed for a short scope?
Just one I looked at. Is this type generally called a cantilever?

My hunting is usually an old .270 or .45/70 so bare with me :)

Thank you ahead of time!

That mount is not needed nor any like it. You could get some mdt rings on sale for black Friday and call it a day.
Or...

You could also look for some used seekins or vortex rings here on the hide. They go anywhere from $85 to $110 and are a good deal at such prices.

Good luck.

Some of those names mentioned are sound. Arken, for sure. Athlon, Vortex PST. I would add Leupold Mark 4HD. I do believe in spending a little more money on glass, especially with 6ARC. There is a reason you are shooting that round, and accuracy I bet is top of the list.

The 18 inch ARC I briefly had wore a Bushnell DMR 2 Pro.

Wouldn’t hurt to look for a used LRTSi or an LRHSi either. A lot of good glass for the money.

If you get a Helos G2 2-12 and it breaks just send it back for a replacement. There are waaaaaaaay more satisfied owners of these than not. And you are getting waaaaay more scope than the price it sells for. I had two of these and decided to sell one to a friend(as he wanted it right then) and I wanted more magnification on my 6mmFatRat but not because I didn't love the scope. Furthermore if you can't see the reticle on 2x like with other MPVO's then why have one. Better off with more mag and additional RDS instead.

If you want a really tough scope then plan on paying the higher price for one.

Super compact scopes can and often do have optical compromises. I know this first hand more than most. Not my only example but my March DFP 1-10 shorty isn't great optically at higher magnification. So I've been done with super compact scopes for years now.

Or look at lower magnification SFP scopes.

ShotShow is coming soon and perhaps some other Co's will come out with adaquate alternatives???

I have a Viper PST G2 3-15 on Rem 700 .308 deer gun and I'm quite happy with it for that purpose.

If you are LEO/mil/vet then Eurooptics offers a discount program overall but in particular they have some very good prices on Vortex. Even without the discount program, they have good Vortex pricing.
