Omi, might seem funny, but we do mail most everything in we can. Our road is still glaciated with one section (about quarter mile) 2-3 feet water & ice on; pretty tough getting through until she drains. I just have a couple gun shops that I like buying from as they treat me well enough. Trouble is when our road opens late, I'm thinking about a new gun that I should be shooting off the back porch bench.
Locals trade guns back and forth with relatives across border in Canada, nobody uses papers as they travel the river mostly. Actually, gun control in Canada isn't enforced like I hear told, but maybe it's just that the Canadians I know choose to disregard their laws too. Canadians I know have special gun buying license if they want to buy a new gun with paperwork. When I buy a new gun at shop; I have to sign and produce license, fill out everything. I've never shipped guns, powder or primers in due to expense and headaches.
I've seen those DPMS 338 feds, they have barrel a couple inches shorter than armalites. Killed caribou with the 6.8, knocks them down. I'm sure I could drop a moose with 6.8 too, just want something a little more. Sure hope I see more calibers on AR platforms.

Wasn't so much meaning shipping guns to your house as I was talking about accessories. But if your local shops are taking care of you on these kinda things too, then you're set. I have a hard time staying off GunBroker.com and similar for stuff I "need" but then I don't have to live with getting snowed in for months at a time. How long did it take you to get used to that?
On the DPMS Panther rifles, they make them in several calibers besides just the 6.8mm, such as in .308 http://www.dpmsinc.com/firearms/category.aspx?id=9 and 7.62x51 http://www.dpmsinc.com/firearms/category.aspx?id=15
I kinda figured Canadians who don't live in the the big Eastern cities pretty much ignore the ridiculous laws there, but good to know too. There's so much gorgeous untouched country up there that I could see living there some day.

Omi, I spend enough at Brownells, Midway, and Cabelas; mostly shooting & reloading supplies. Two years back, I picked up 50 lbs powder, 10K primers at Sportsmans in Fairbanks; they gave me 10% off and my grandkids won't ever run outta hunting ammo. I never regretted all the 556 I bought at $179/case back in late 80s; it will outlast my time on this earth. We ship & mail in much of our canned goods on small bush planes. I got in this habit about a year back to every month, get 15 cases of one item when on sale, spend the 80 bucks to mail it in; got over 3 year supply, probably 6 year supply actually. We also have big garden and eat alot of caribou, moose, and salmon. I ain't going hungry anytime soon; let her all fall apart; I'll be eating cherry pie for sure, ha.
I've looked at gun broker but kinda shy about getting ripped being outta state. We have this Ak List up here, like craigs list but guns; must be 20-30 new guns on there everyday. I usually buy 3-4 guns off the list every year, one reason I buy from gun shops. I can send gun shop money, then have guy bring gun in drop off and then I get gun nx spring. We are locked in here from Oct till about now, but once you get use to it, you like living in a small community where you know every single person for 200 miles; or more importantly, you know all their business; real sense of security. No locked doors, no crime, no prop taxes, or local govt, no Law enforcement hiding in the weeds;;;; all kinds of freedom. If I ever moved into fairbanks, I'd be locked up within a week for nothing probably. Wife and I have our teaching degrees, so life is good & easy for us I figure. If I had to choose the road being closed or open; take it closed hands down; keeps modernization out. We don't even have cell coverage as the locals don't want towers. Ya know, some of the old timers always remind me that they have been here 40 years, and nothing much has really changed and they like it.
It gets minus 60 here for a few weeks every January, was 2 below this morning, but light hours are back so it warms up quick during the day. We have snowmachines, atvs, and I had dog team for many years; kinda like living in the mountains out west with snow.
One of these days, I'll pick up a 7.62 on AK list. I've seen a bunch laid out for sale. We have a shooting contest every summer at targets out in the middle of Yukon on island. We'll get these tourists from Anchorage with long range 7.62's and they'll hit 800 yard targets all day long; I've thought about a few. I've been thinking about a 338 lapua or a 6.8 LWRC last few months; time to work on the wifey and get my nephew to get her lots of px ciggs when he comes back from Afghanistan. The lazer he has on his M4 is super nice; heck the govt won't even let me buy one like he has for no amount of money; that ain't right??? I sent him about 10 lbs caribou dry meat last month, made with uncle abes, good stuff. I figure he'll be up here killin caribou come late summer if they don't extend him. Anyway, seeing the picts he sends flying around; some things never change in America Thank God.
Not hard to build a heavy duty T bench out of scrap 6X6 legs and 2x6 boards; plans on net. I luv just shooting whenever I so feel like it, haven't been to a real public shooting in 25 years. I'd probably get thrown out for doing something against the rules, not knowing any better honestly.
We live 4 miles from border of Canada and I know as many Canadians as Alaskans, the ones I know are all ok. They all have pistols and mini-14s and for some reason they don't buy leupolds; they swear by Conquests & Diavaris. One Indian buddy spent 2200 on one in Whitehorse. They can get special permits to carry pistols for gold claims ect. Heck my Canadian friends come to Alaska to use our fishnets for salmon as Canada doesn't want them to catch the same fish when they swim past their house. Western Canadians are good guys, no different than us.
Didn't mean to go on, good talking just the same. I'm going to go out and fire up the snowmachine and take a short ride. First I'll look over that 7.62, thanks

For some reason I thought you were in Western Canada. No matter, it still sounds very cool up there. The months at a time isolation we could definitely handle without problem, maybe even the low temps. But besides the low temps in January, don't you also have weeks or month of night followed by uber long days too? My wife couldn't handle those perpetual nights, would drive her nuts. She's like a plant in that she needs sunlight.
I've been buying firearms on Gunbroker since 2001. Never had a problem, but then I'm careful to the point of being paranoid. Only buy from sellers with lots of good feedback. Once the transaction is done, they ship to my local FFL, and I then go pick it up from them and pay the $5-$25 transfer fee. Almost like buying a gun from the dealer only the didn't sell it to me. Works darned well and allows me with a bit of careful shopping to buy at or below dealer cost.
As for that .338 Lapua you're considering, you should also consider a 50BMG. I've shot both, and have a 50 Barrett M82 (semi-auto) myself. The .338 was from a bolt action. Kicks like a mule, BAD (what I call a hurtstashootit) but was still fun and a good flat shooter. Super sweet precision rifle too.
Shooting the .50 is shooting a personal sized cannon shell from a personal sized cannon in on the target. Much more "industrial" feel to it, but undeniably effective at 1000+ yards. Recoil is like a 12 gauge.
Used to be that 50BMG ammo was way cheaper than the 338, but not so much anymore. Last I checked the two were getting pretty comparable. Course you can shoot mil surplus stuff out of the 50 for less, especially if you buy in bulk, but won't be really accurate versus the 338LM. Also tends to be a bit cheaper to get components for the 50 if you reload.
Rifles wise, again you're looking at comparable depending on what you want. Figure $2000 ish to start up to $8000 plus. Maybe less for you with AK List. Sure wish I had something like that down here.
Anyhow, back to work for me. And scope shopping. Wish someone could chime in about the Trijicon AccuPoints, but maybe in time.

Ran down our winter closed road yesterday and picked up that Armalite AR-10 338 fed from nearest gun shop which is 200 miles away. She's heavy as shit, (like an M-14) but I'm happy with the armalite.
I had order 2 Leu's and they were there too. VX-3l sealed in box for on my 30-378 and a Mark 4.
The Mark 4 2.5X8X36 looked fishy. I had ordered the illuminated version and it was non-illum. So I told the gun shop guy to order another one, didn't want it without lit reticle. Then I started looking scope over and for sure didn't want her. No "L" medalion on the side and that thin ring near objective looked like a 3 year had painted on it, blk color didn't even match the objectve. The wife was there and she was even kicking me, said something was wrong, not being sealed and all; she said it didn't even fit the box right with the foam inserts. Anyway, I told the guy rather than reordering an illum 2.5x8x36, maybe I want that 1.5X5 with CMR2 reticle (lit red horseshoe that surrounds red dot & cross hairs). Maybe the Chinese haven't faked that one yet. Maybe this fake stuff is all in my mind caused by my paranoid mind from drug use as a kid, ha ha, but I didn't walk out of that store with that scope and it got me thinking. I also wrote the serial number that was on the scope down and I'm calling Leupold on monday just to know for myself. Sad to say, but I'll continue buying from this gun shop, as he gives super good price and I always liked the guy, nearest gun shop to me too. Maybe I'm completely off base on this fake thing, but when the wifey starts noticing shaky things on a Leupold, something ain't right, ha ha. Sre glad he ordered the non-illum one in, that screamed no way to me from the start.
I also told the guy to give me a price on a barret 50 like you mentioned. He said he had one at their other store down on the kenai, might send it up. Might as well start paying on a 50 rather than a 338 lapua and then buy another 50 down the road. I told the wife it'd be 2500-3000 and she didn't collapse on the spot, so I figure I'm good to go. Again, which 50 is the best one to start paying on?

Good catch on the Leupold. Something definitely not right there. I almost got caught on a copy of a Trijicon ACOG, said "Trijicon" right there on the side and everything, but something just didn't look right. Chinese copy. Arg.
