Rifle Scopes Scope wrap for AMG

So, I just got my new AMG and I'm aware how notorious they are for scratching easily. I'm not too much worried about it, but if I can protect t a little, might as well.

What kinds of scope wraps or other means of protecting it would you recommend?

I wrapped mine in paracord six months ago. No problems so far.

I use McNett tapes, those work great.

Me too. Not that parachord is heavy, but McNett weighs nothing. Whatever you do, make sure it’s easy to undo.

There is a company online, Gunskins I think. A vinyl sticker type I think that you heat shrink on. Haven't tried them but I have been tempted to on my AMG. Definitely not a quick removal product though.

I felt the need to post on this thread. Mainly because I think there may be a misconception about scratching. The AMG uses a anodized type 3 hard coat finish. We are using the same finish prescribed by MIL-A-8625F for Type III, class II hardcoat finish. With this type of finish it can be semi-easily marked up, but at the same time it can also easily be cleaned off.......similar to an AR receiver. For example: You can leave a mark on the scope by running your finger nail down it. However, you can then wipe that mark off. So, would that be considered a scratch?

I guess my question is- Are you guys seeing scopes that easily "scratch" or scopes that mark up ,but can be wiped off?


OP, your certainly can wrap your scope, but I dont think your scope is going to scratch easily. The AMG's have a good bit harder finish on them than any of our other scopes and we dont have any problems that I know of with any of them scratching easily.

It could very well be surface "scratches" that I see a lot on AMGs I have handled. I'll be running mine quite hard, so I'll get some feedback to you guys on that within the next few months.

This is purely a subjective observation from handling and talking to many people with the Gen II vs the AMG. The consensus seems to be the finish is more durable on the Gen II vs the AMG.

Is here any difference in the finish between the two?


It could also be as simple as color. Surface marks probably just show up better against black than they do against the bronze Gen II.

I have GunSkins on a shotgun of mine, and my buddy has used them on a number of rifles and scopes. They're not difficult to install, though some things are obviously more tedious than others (think things with lots of little holes, like Keymod rails, or with weird shapes), and not difficult to take off either with no residue that I could tell. Just need a heat gun or similar instrument for both installation and removal. If you take your time, and I recommend watching their installation videos online, the end result is pretty nice and I'd think meaningfully more protective than Cerakote or a similar product.

I will say that my buddy told me by far the biggest pain in the ass installation, however, was his Gen II Razor 4.5-27x. Nothing specific to that scope, but the tapering sections, the details on the turrets, working around the rings, etc. apparently took more time than some entire rifles. I'd expect that to be the same on an AMG or any other scope.

The scope can take way more punishment than you think. Its like people who buy a car a freak out when it gets a scratch. Get over it.

Your shit looks way cooler dinged up and covered in dust then as a wall hanger anyway. Use the gear, its what it was designed for.

Where did you hear or see that the AMG's scratch easy? I will buying an AMG soon.

To help answer your question about wraps I've used wraps called Rem Wrap on anything I needed camo'd over. I used it on Tripods, GoPro camera housings outdoors and no issues so far.

To clarify, I wasn't making a post dinging the optic. It is flawless so far for me. I'll be running tall target and box tests this weekend to verify tracking and such. But its my favorite optic so far and I've owned ATACRs and PM II's. Obviously its a subjective opinion, as they are all great scopes. The AMG just met my needs better overall.

No worries. I'm already getting one no matter what. I wanted to save some weight for my hunting rifle by staying with a 30mm tube. Thanks for the link.

As the vortex rep indicated, these scopes do not scratch easily. They do, however mark easily (like fingernails for example). These scopes are hard anodized like all other aluminum tubes on the market, which is a hardening process.
The marks wipe right off.. really not an issue. Seems like this is one of those internet rumors that won't die.

That is a very interesting info. In all actuality the AMG has the hardest finish of any in our line. Most scopes on the market are type 2 hardcoat . This is true for the Gen 2 razor. As we mentioned earlier in the thread the AMG is mil spec Type 3 hardcoat.

It’s just humans being humans then. We think something looks like this and then numbers/stats are pulled and it’s not the case.

I’m going to go with my theory of the “chalkboard” scratches just showing up better against the black than against the bronze.

Either way, love my amg.

Also, damnit.......make a super short amg 3-18, before I buy something else for my gas gun!!!!

I have a few bonefide scratches on my Gen II Razors, but they are both far from safe queens. That being said, they (the scratches) are not very deep; the coating is pretty tough.

That limited run to EuroOptic did not appease the masses.

I managed to score one of the black Gen 2 Razors. It is awesome. I’ve not been able to warm up to the standard Razor color.

my cheap alternative is to use Band-Aid or Ace brand bandage like for when you wrap a sprained wrist or ankle. It comes in a 2-inch width about 2 yards long. I've bought it in either tan (or white for winter/snow camo); available at my local grocery store. Some brands have an elastic backing that helps it stay in place.
