Semi-auto brake question

I initially installed a PWS brake on my LMT-308 and after shooting a couple hundred rounds I noticed a lot of black gas soot under the handguards, barrel and handguard holes. I pulled the barrel and cleaned the rifle up. I then installed a JP tactical brake and after a few hundred rounds noticed the same black soot all over the inside of the handguards and barrel.

Do I have a leaky gas system or is this normal for brakes to cause tons of soot under the handguards?

Re: Semi-auto brake question

+1 to what Boltripper said. Muzzle brake wouldn't deposit carbon residue underneath your handguards.

Re: Semi-auto brake question

I know I have a small black spot on my 15. This the whole inside of the handrails, the holes in the hand rail, the barrel back about 12 inches from the block. Not the tiny little spot my 15 has.

Re: Semi-auto brake question

After a couple hundred rounds, yes, but without pics it is hard to tell just how much buildup you're talking about. I don't worry too much about carbon in non-functioning areas until it starts actually caking up.

So long as your rifle is functioning properly, I wouldn't suspect anything out of the norm as far as gas leakage. If it is short stroking, FTE, etc, then I would be led to believe it is more than normal and your gas block or tube may have come loose. Otherwise, welcome to shooting a gas operated .308 and the associated cleaning involved.

Re: Semi-auto brake question

I have had 3-4 FTJ's and my brass does land right next to the gun instead of flinging out far to the right. It seems it is low on pressure. Switching magazines and bumping up my powder charge made it cycle but my thoughts are its leaking gas and that is why I asked this question.

Re: Semi-auto brake question

With the combination of function problems and that much carbon, you may very well have a loose gas tube or block. You may want to have it looked at then.

How is the functioning with factory loads?

I agree! Sounds like a gas tube or block issue.
