What's interesting about that type of statement (yes this specific one alludes to a non scientific event), but going back to actually quoted proper "discovery dates" in European eccentric history, is how stupid and backwards the Europeans became thanks to their own stupidity and the horrific evil that was the Catholic Church.
The Europeans and their stupid ideas of religion took a giant leap backwards into ignorance and religious superstitions and it took them a thousand years to just get back to where science was prior to the horror that was the rule of the Catholic Church.
Back in 240 BC the Greeks had proven the earth was a sphere and actually knew how big the earth was to within 2% to 3% of the accepted measurement today.
The Arabs of course enjoyed pointing out what ignorant fools the Europeans were, right up until they went religion crazy and took a giant leap backwards themselves that they haven't yet managed to shake.
Just like the stupid European Catholics with their "god given dogma" that the sun and everything revolved around the Earth.
Pretty much everybody else (including their own ancestors) understood solar and celestial mechanics to a very high degree of knowledge, enough to make very accurate long term celestial calendars and align buildings to point at different stars at just the right times.
As much as we could shake our heads at those dogmatic religious fools and the monstrously vile religious leaders that they followed, just look around you today and it's happening all over, religion and dogma is once again becoming the "truth" instead of facts and science. Except this time it's the woke cult and the haters of all that is decent that are making the new insane dogmas that totally ignore any scientific facts.
Just like the religious zealots before them, they are starting to viciously attack and oppress anyone that tries to actually point out scientific facts.
I don't doubt they will start trying to kill people before long for saying facts and science are real and their religious dogmas are not.

Flat earth is a modern invention, and was certainly not popular at any point in history. Its a myth made up by today.

It was the Ptolemic model of the Universe that everyone (Greeks, Romans, ARabs, Indians, etc...) followed with the Earth as the center (with its notorious epicycle to explain planetary "backwards" motion). The Church (we really didnt have anything besides Catholic until 1500 or so) followed the Greeks and Romans (previous attempts at heliocentrism having been lost). And point of fact if the earth moved you should be able to measure the parallax of the stars....but they couldn't because they had no clue how far away the stars are (even today, we can BARELY measure parallax of nearby stars with our modern equipment).
Now the Arab world did suspect by about 1000AD that the Ptolemy model (geocentric) was inaccurate, but their ideas spread to Europe and of course paralleled Copernicus argument against the Ptolemy model. (Fun fact, you can make good predictions with a model that isn't correct! All models are wrong--some are useful!)
So the data fit their model. Then we got better data. And then we got a better model.
