Thats a generic response if a website has been blocked/deemed a security risk due to a malicious security breech. So Sailors and Marines will not be able to access SH at work or on the NMCI "Intranet" It could be at one command or the whole network.

Interestingly enough, SH hit my companies filters over the weekend as well. Tried to log in this morning and got the Warning message that it was blocked. Interesting timing to be a coincidence.
Lowlight, It sounds as though SH made one of the main web filter Blacklists that gets propagated to most of the web content filtering engines.
FYI, As of now you can still get around it for some of the filters by just using https: instead of http:

I am still not getting the answer I need to address it ?
Was it blocked recently for a specific reason, like the hack or the spam. When they hack the site, which we have been attacked twice this past week, they generally throw in some malicious code. We found that code immediately and removed it, and no one i know was affected, but that doesn't mean some of the resources online dont' find it rather quickly.
We have also taken to blocking google this past week, is that an issue that is flagging as a problem ?

This is a great site and I am pretty much on it every day, but if you look to the left and check the stats you can see why it may have been taken off the NMCI. The mods have done a good job of cleaning up the motivational threads, but there was enough content on there to get a military member an article 134 for browsing it at work. Now there could also be some code stuff that is not copacetic with the NMCI network but not sure.
Don't get me wrong, it could just be a malicious code thing, but I have stood in many a disciplinary review board because Sailors decided to stray into websites that are not appropriate for the workplace. I sat in a briefing back when the current MCPON was Fleet Master Chief PACFLT. One of his biggest pet peeves was internet porn at work.
For those on military computers, I would just suggest staying off the site at work until Frank gets this sorted out. The little warning sign that Artic posted is just that, if you keep attempting to go to a known blocked site, those are logged for each computer. I do not work for NMCI as I have already retired, but I know they are logged because that is how Sailors get busted. Well at least the ones I sat in review boards for.

Frank, This could be due to multiple reasons. The fact that its hitting more than one filter tells me that the site has enough traffic to have been crawled for content by the filter companies that provide the content/site filter lists to the filtering engines. Most likely SH has been recently added to a category of sites that were already blocked but SH just made the updated list.

Content Categories: Firearms, Guns, Ammo, Nudity, Obscenities, Inappropriate content, etc. etc.

Google and the content filtering proxies that companies use are 2 completely separate things. This most likely has nothing to do with Google.

In general - the concept that your place of business - wants you to do your work - and not surf the Internet is rather common.
Amusingly as was already stated many companies that block just about all Internet sites still allow facebook - why? because the company is invested in social network marketing and therefore they have employees whose job it is to post things on facebook and twitter.
As for the original post about the Navy; I personally ran an outreach program to gather routers, switches, and even satellite broadband dish - to bring an entire Army division onto the Internet while they were deployed in Iraq a few years ago. Why? Because the Internet connection the Army had on the base - did not allow them to use Instant Messaging, Skype, and several 2A/RKBA sites were blocked from the Army's network.
So don't think this has much to do with SH directly. Other than someone in the Navy's tech department delivering the monthly report to management that says - "this is what our navy personal are doing while on the computers".

There was a second message that stated, in parens, "Shooting/hobby website" - as part of the reason it was blocked.

I've been in the IT game a while - system engineer, security geek, and a CIO (head geek in charge) for the past 9 years. Just don't ask me to figure out the new MS Word menu structure...
You got catagorized on someone's list most likely - happens fairly frequently to a lot of sites. The way it works is this;
WebSense (or pick your net nanny company) uses a couple of sources to 'type' web sites - search engines, some basic pattern matching, or eye balls so they can say 'hustler.com = adult/porn' and 'etrade.com = financial' and put all these sites into various categories.
The web filter software then uses those catagories to block/permit, as well as some custom catagorization (where the admin can manually mark a site as 'catagory X') in the event that a web filter company hasn't gotten around to catagorizing your site.
They make mistakes. For example, dvor.com is catagorized as 'entertainment' by Sophos - it should be a shopping web site. There is a mechanism for the admin to re-catagorize the site on their own system and a way for them to report a miscatagorized site to the vendor (sophos in my case.)
Reporting a miscatagorized site and getting it corrected takes some time - the vendor is going to check and confirm, and then they update the master database, and then the updates get sent out to their clients. Heck, even locally recatagorizing the site can take some time because unless it is business affecting, most admins have more important stuff to do. Now, I can see how accessing this site could be 'business affecting' for the military, but it ain't that important to them.
Best solution? Have a user call the service desk (or the dis-service desk, depending on your organization) and ask for the site to be catagorized correctly. Some key phrases would be things like 'the web site is used for training, research and recruitment purposes.'

When I looked in via https, it was the shoutbox that was still being blocked. Im guessing the reason the site was blocked by various proxies was due to a recently released SQL injection attack that SH shoutbox was vulnerable to and the web proxy companies had it listed as a known infected webpage.
