Shilen Rifles/Actions

Now that they've been out for a bit, does anyone have experience with these? The barrel nut system seems to suggest that the barrel can be installed at home without the need for a gunsmith.

I'm looking to have a custom rifle built and see that it would be advantageous to be able to install the barrel myself. Mainly because I plan to have it melonited after a short break in.

Shilen actions are basically a Remington/Savage hybrid... Remington footprint and trigger w/ a Savage barrel nut and floating bolthead... the recoil lugs are pinned... barrel change and caliber conversion is just like a Savage due to the nut and bolthead... but you get the aftermarket support of Remington.


If you're not familiar w/ Savage barrel changes, all you really need is a go gauge, barrel nut wrench, and a way to hold the barrel or action solid (barrel vice, action wrench, etc)

I wonder if the receiver threads are for a Savage barrel? I'll ask them.

Shilen actions are stiller actions, I believe Tac-30 but am not positive.

700 footprint with either a shouldered barrel or barrel nut system.
It is exactly like any other remington barrel nut system and uses remington threads.

They are not like a remington in the front. They have the savage threads and take savage barrels. The bolt head floats and has the same depths for barrel cone area dimensions. You can either use the savage nut or shoulder them like any other gun.

Wow, I never expected to see this thread again. Thanks for the info, will be good to know for a future build. Unfortunately I pissed the money I was going to use on this build for something that goes Vroom so it may be a while.

I saw these when Shilen first brought em back. I thought they would have taken off like a rocket but feedback has been pretty quiet. It's the best of both worlds PLUS a high quality custom action!

I wish I would've known better earlier, I'd have at least 2 of them now. As it is, I have a custom 6.5-284 built on a Stevens action and a 300 Win Mag Remington 700 Sendero in an AI chassis. The Stevens with the McGowan barrel is more accurate.

from what I have read on savageshooter forums. Shilen doesn't want to sell customers the bolt heads for changing to diff bolt face diameters.

So it looks like I'm gonna pick one up. I hear from all of you that the action works with a stock inlet for a Rem 700 action. If this works, I'm gonna call Shilen tomorrow to confirm and then order their barreled action and put it in a Manners T4A - DBM Mini Chassis stock. Wish me luck !

From what I've found out so far, the actions are Stiller Predator actions, with Savage threads and nut. I tried researching the bolt head issue and made a bit of a discovery. It looks like the Stiller actions use PTG bolts. And PTG makes replaceable floating bolt heads for Savages. So I'm not certain, but it looks like you could get bolt heads to swap straight from PTG.

I'll bump this up o e time too. I was seriously looking at these as well. But without confirmation regarding bolt heads I was a bit hesitant but back up for those on the know regarding bolt head swap#

contact bighorn. they made a run that uses savage barrels. as of about two weeks ago, still had some in stock.. think it was the savage tactical rifle thread that it was mentioned

After reading about the Bighorn actions threaded for Savage pre its in the Savage tactical thread I called Stiller to see if they would thread one of their actions for the Savage thread pattern. When I called Stiller, Jerry answered the phone and told me about the actions he makes for Shilen with the Savage thread pattern and floating bolt head, a Remmy footprint (minus all of the Remmy quality issues) that uses any of the available small shank Savage pre fits and a floating bolt head pretty much checks all of the boxes that I have been looking for. I am selling a 1911 now to pay for a Shilen action.

OP here, damn this thread is old. I never got around to getting one, did other builds instead, but am still intriuged by it. I would probably go with it if doing a new build from scratch.

I have to admit that I have spent a lot of time wondering how the Shilen actions compare to the Big Horn pieces. On one hand, a quick search around the Hide will turn up plenty of folks who have hands-on experience with the Big Horn, but, being a Texas kind of guy, I like the idea of supporting my local folks. Besides, I have worked with the folks at Stiller before and had a great experience; it doesn't hurt that I work maybe 10 minutes from their shop.
