Hello All,

I recently purchased a Rem 700 SS 5-R 300WM. Many posts on these claim(well, all I've read are .308 rifles though) of sub MOA groups with their factory rifle/action/barrel.

Intent of rifle: Enjoyment of shooting, out to 600yd by me at the moment. When I can dial in 600 well, I'll join the club that has the 1200yd range.

So, my question is, should I bother to true the action and change out barrel yet? Would I truly gain much if I did? I have attended rifle schools, and my old 700PSS was able to do it's part if I did mine for .8-1.2 MOA(I realize that isn't fantastic, but it was bone stock!) I haven't shot this 300WM rifle yet though. My thought is to shoot it until the barrel is worn, and when I install a brand "X" barrel, likely a Brux since they're local, I will have action trued at that time also.

I'm just trying to best allocate and prioritize my money on the rifle. When I send it off to have some things done, I'd like to just send it off once, even if I have to wait to send it.

Shoot the shit out of it. I've setup a 5R 300WM for my buddy and it shoots 0.75 MOA groups with Sierra Gameking 200 gr hunting bullets. Didn't take much searching to find a load either. Only tried H1000 and Gamekings. Rifle is stock. 3.5-15 NXS glass. Badger 20 MOA Rail, Badger .885 rings. Harris bipod. BALS Mk2 from SKD.

He hasn't done so but the only change I would make is to stick it in an AICS or a Manners stock with a mini chassis.

Shoot it until it won't shoot anymore...then true it and put a new barrel on it. If you plan to get a Remington 700 to true and install a barrel on, get a cheap assed old beater ADL out of the paper or Gunbroker with a crappy stock and start from there. Don't tear up a good 5R until you've shot it ALOT.

Scope it and shoot it!

The 5R rifles (.308 and 300WM alike) are generally the cream of the crop in terms of Remington's factory offerings. They should be capable of sub-MOA accuracy as long as you are doing your part shooting it and you feed it decent fodder.

I have an older 300wm PSS (not 5R) that shoots 1 moa with factory ammo (BHM 190smk) sure handloads will be even better.

The 5R's just plain shoot great out the box. You really dont need to go balls out with gunsmith work but you can start your way towards your "Dream Build". Bed the stock, replace bottom metal and trigger and if you plan on shooting any quantity of 300WM may as well have the barrel threadded and a break installed. I went with the Surefire brake but there are plenty to choose from. Durracoating is another realativly low cost option you may choose if the Stainless color dosnt do it for you.

Shoot it, then do all your work that you need to have done. You stated in the OP, when you rebarreled it, get it trued and and what not. That is the correct plan of action you need to take. Get comfortable with your new toy, and practice the fundamentals. The rest will come with time. Have fun in the mean time and save your pennies. Just my $.02.

+1, the stock trigger has to go. unless you know how to tune it, of course. most of shooters here tried without success, however, GAP can do magic on it.

Shoot it, if you get lucky, the trigger will hold its weight, replace it when you start feeling the weight is inconsistent.ddd

This is what I'm doing. Get one and shoot the barrel out and then move on.

I got a chance to look down an AW .300 win Mag barrel this past weekend that was replaced after about 3,000 shots. The rifling was literally worn the first 7 or so inches, you didn't need a bore scope to see it.
The guy shooting this tied for first place at the last match, and he said it was acting a little stange.
So there you have it, you now know how many bullets to buy. LOL

I'm not flaming you but why would you even ask before you have seen how it will shoot? The engine will wear out one day in my car, that does not mean I am going to replace the engine now. If you are just looking for validation to throw money at it now then go do it. If it were me I would follow the advice of pretty much everyone else in this thread and go burn out that barrel then you will have some trigger time to go with your new barrel. I have seen PSS's group like my 870 and I have seen some make 1/4" 5 round groups (the exception), you won't know if you have a winner until you burn some ammo. Go shoot and enjoy.

Training Wheels, your question is valid, and I may not have been clear in my original post, my apologies.

Intent of my question was mostly because I only want to ship my rifle ONCE, vs multiple times for this, that and the other thing. If I needed to save up more $$ in order to have everything happen, I would. BUT. . . I don't need to save the money for an action-truing and barrel which saves me ~$700-ish and some. Enough for just shy of a case of ammo heh? YOWZER!

Again, thank you all. Pistols have been more my "specialty" and practice, so this is a new game.

Shoot it and send it lol thats what i did with mine. Shot it until i got my McMillan A-5 in then sent it to get bedded. Gunsmith took the creep out of the X-markpro trigger and set it to 1lb and it's actually quite nice. I'll eventually replace it and add bottom metal, and then true the bolt. Really want a bigger profile barrel but i can't complain about my accuracy because the gun shoots better than i can.
